Issue Problem: Nothing happens when the CD is inserted into the CD-ROM drive in Windows '95 or '98.
Description
Solution Wait about 10 seconds or so after inserting the CD to give your drive a chance to read it. If nothing happens after 10 seconds, the Windows 95 feature called "AutoPlay" may be disabled on your system. Some Packard Bell, IBM and other brands of computers have this feature turned off by default.

Installing and Playing without AutoPlay

  1. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon on your Windows '95 or '98 desktop.
  2. Double-click on the CD-ROM icon.
  3. Double-click on the icon labeled either "AutoBirthday-Red.exe" or "AutoBirthday-Yellow.exe",
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the Blue's Birthday Adventure.

Issue Problem: I see an error message that contains the words "Internal Error Run out of Array" when I attempt to launch the game.
Description
Solution To fix this problem, just follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Windows Start button.
  2. Select "Run" from the menu.
  3. In the window that appears, type HEGAMES.INI.
  4. Click on the OK button. This will open a file that contains information about all of the Humongous entertainment games that you have installed.
  5. Scroll down until you find the section for Blue's Birthday Adventure.
  6. In this section, find the line that reads "NoDirectX=0".
  7. Change the 0 to a 1.
  8. Close the document, choosing yes when asked if you wish to save.

If there is no line of text in the Blue's Art Time Activities section that reads "NoDirectX=0", you'll need to add it like this:

  1. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard, move the cursor to the end of the last line of text in this section.
  2. Press the <Enter> key.
  3. Type in nodirectx=1.
  4. Press <Enter> again.
  5. Close the document.

Issue Problem: slow video display
Description
Solution You computer's video card is probably set to use too many colors. For the fastest display possible, set your video card to "256 color" mode. To change your color settings, please follow these simple instructions:

  1. Click on the Windows '95 "Start" button.
  2. Click on "Settings"
  3. Click on "Control Panel".
  4. Double click on the "Display" icon.
  5. Click on the "Settings" tab.
  6. At the left of the Settings window is the color palette option. Set this to 256 colors.

While in this Control Panel, you may wish to change your screen area to 640x480 for better game performance, then click on the "Apply" button. If your display does not look right after this, don't panic. Leave your computer alone for approximately 15 seconds, and windows will automatically restore your previous settings.

If you cannot switch over to the correct video mode, you may need to re-install the video drivers for your card, or obtain updated drivers from your computer manufacturer.

Finally, click on "OK", Restart your computer if required, and try running the game again.

Issue Problem: The video display is choppy, or the entire screen gets shifted, or the video display just doesn't look right.
Description
Solution You probably need to update your video card drivers.

Most video card manufacturers keep their latest driver software their Internet website for free downloading. If you do not have Internet access, call your computer company's technical support line and ask them how you may obtain updated drivers for your card.

Also, it is possible that your computer does not have DirectX loaded, which is a required component for the game. This component is on your Blue's Birthday Adventure CD-ROM, and can be installed from there.

Issue Problem: Can't enter your entire name at the beginning of the game.
Description
Solution We're sorry, but the name sign in feature is limited to 8 spaces only. If your name doesn't fit, try entering a nickname for yourself instead.

Issue Problem: Lockup after Sign-in
Description
Solution This is usually caused by having too many names in the sign-in book. The game can only handle a certain number of names. If you get this lockup, highlight a name you don't need, and click the eraser.

Issue Problem: No Sound or Sound Distorted
Description
Solution You probably need to update your sound card drivers.

Most sound card manufacturers keep their latest driver software their Internet website for free downloading. If you do not have Internet access, call your computer company's technical support line and ask them how you may obtain updated drivers for your card.

Issue I am having trouble running the game under Mac OS 9 or later operating systems.
Description
Solution You may need the Mac OS 9 Enable patch to run this game properly. It can be found in the Downloads section at the bottom of this page

Issue Problem: The game will not install, and I am running on System 7.5.3.
Description
Solution Apple recommends that all Macintosh users who have Macintosh System 7.5.3 should upgrade to Macintosh System 7.5.5 for better performance on all Macintosh-compatible products, including this game. While this is no longer available as a free download from Apple, you should be able to get it from various third-party sites. Selectsoft Publishing  is not responsible for any problems encountered when using third-party software and cannot support this practice.

Issue Problem: I hear popping sounds or static while the characters are talking.(MAC)
Description
Solution This happens occasionally if you have changed the default sound settings, or if you have a computer that barely meets the minimum system requirements. There is nothing wrong with the game.

Issue An error message appears on the screen during installation or when trying to play.
Description
Solution Look at the error message while it's still on your screen. If there is a Details button in the error window, click on it to see more about your problem. If the error contains the words "Invalid Page Fault in module ABCTime.exe", then your CD-ROM drive may be running in "MS-DOS compatibility mode" which will not work with this game.

For more information on this problem, such as how to be sure that your computer is in this mode, please see our Windows 95/98/ME General Troubleshooting FAQ. If your system is running in MS-DOS compatibility mode, you will need to contact your computer manufacturer for help.

Issue Black Cursor
Description With certain video cards, the inventory cursor may occasionally turn black, so that it is difficult to see. If you have this problem, follow these steps:
Solution
  1. If you exit the game and restart it, the problem should go away.
  2. If the problem persists, exit the game
  3. Click the Start button, and then click Run
  4. In the "Open" box, type HEGAMES.INI and press <Enter>
  5. Scroll down until you see BluesBirthdayA in square brackets
  6. Click after the last bracket on that line and press <Enter> once to create a new line
  7. Type BlackAndWhiteCursors=1 as though it were all one word
  8. While in the hegames Notepad, you may also want to follow the same procedure for BluesBirthdayB
  9. Then close the hegames Notepad and agree to accept the changes.
  10. Restart the computer and run the demo again

Issue How to Set Difficulty Levels
Description
Solution Setting the difficulty levels in this game must be done before you begin to actually play the game, in the "Choose Your Game Path" screen. Press the <S> key on your keyboard before you choose your path. Then you can set either the master difficulty switch, or set the different games' difficulty settings individually.

For more details, please press F1 while on this screen, to access the help file included on your CDROM.

Downloads
Humongous OS9 Enabler Patch (9.41kb)
Install Instructions
  1. After finishing the download process, find the file named HE MacOS 9 Enabler. The icon will look like a puzzle piece with the Humongous Entertainment logo on it. (By default, most Macs should place downloads on the Desktop. If your browser is set up to download files to a different location, check that folder instead.)

Special Note: If you do not see the HE MacOS 9 Enabler icon, but instead see a file called AX.CGI or AX.PL, this means you either do not have the latest version of Aladdin Expander Freeware, or your browser is not setup to automatically decompress downloaded files. If this is the case, you will need to download the latest version of Aladdin Expander Freeware from Aladdin Systems and then drag the AX.CGI file onto the Aladdin Expander icon. This will decompress the HE MacOS 9 Enabler file.
  2. Double click on the icon for your main hard drive. Look for a folder called System Folder.
  3. Drag the HE MacOS 9 Enabler file into the System Folder.
  4. A dialog box will appear which says This item needs to be stored in the Extensions folder in order to be available to the computer. Put He MacOS 9 Enabler into the Extensions folder?" Click on the OK button.
  5. Restart your computer. You MUST do this before the file will work.
  6. Your Humongous Entertainment games will now play correctly.

Please Note: Before downloading the above patch, please make sure you have the latest version of the Aladdin Expander Freeware from Aladdin Systems. This is the most popular Mac tool on the internet for decompressing downloaded files, and will make the download process go much more smoothly.
