video animation blanks out. These are the instructions to resolve
the issue.
- Click Start, choose Settings and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the QuickTime 32 icon.
- Click the More button at the bottom.
- Click the Video tab.
- Under Optimization, select Bitmap BMP for the Draw Method.
- Click Apply.
- Click Yes to Apply modifications.
- Click Close.
- Start Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time™ and the
issue should now be resolved.

attempting to start Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time™, a
message appears as "Cannot initialize graphics." These are the
instructions to resolve the issue.
- Click Start, choose Settings and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Display.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Click the down-arrow at the Color Palette (Windows® 95) or
Colors (Windows® 98) and choose 256 Colors.
- Click Apply and Yes to restart the system.
NOTE: If you are having difficulty changing to 256 Colors,
contact your computer manufacturer for assistance. |

Duplicate Color
Puzzle Piece in Case 14 |

A
duplicate puzzle piece exists for Case 14 while playing Carmen
Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time™ These are the instructions to
work around this issue, namely, to start Case 14 over.
- Click File on the menu bar, select Save and then select
Return to Roster.
- Choose the player name.
- Select Play.
- Choose Restart at the prompt, "Do you want to continue or
restart your case from the beginning?" (This will allow you to
start Case 14 from the beginning.)
- When you get to the Declaration puzzle, place the cards in
descending order, from top to bottom.
- List with the color of the card as the first line of the
card.

This message may appear even when DirectX® 3.0 has been already

- Click OK to get through the error message and Carmen
Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time™ should perform properly.
- If this does not work, reinstall DirectX® 3.0b from the
CD-ROM.
- Double-click the My Computer icon on the Desktop.
- Right-click the CD-ROM drive and select "Install DirectX
3.0b" from the pop-up menu.
- Follow the installation instructions and retry the game.
NOTE: If you have Audio difficulties after clicking through
the error message, contact your computer manufacturer for updated

Screen Flashes or Corrupt Display

running Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time™, the screen may
flash during transitions or other display issues may appear. This
behavior may be caused by an incompatibility with a background
application from a recent Macromedia® Shockwave™ software
installation. The background application is called "Shockwave
Remote." Removing the "Shockwave Init" shortcut from the Startup
folder and then restarting your computer usually resolves the
display issue. These are the instructions.
- Click Start, select Settings, and then click Taskbar & Start
Menu.
- Click the Start Menu Programs tab.
- Click the Remove button.
- Double-click the Startup folder.
- Select the "Shockwave Init" shortcut icon.
- Click the Remove button.
- Restart your computer.
Note: "Shockwave Init" controls the Shockwave® Remote Control
Panel. In the future, the remote control can be activated from the
Start Programs Menu by selecting Shockwave® and then choosing
Shockwave® Remote. |

While
starting Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time™ on a Windows®
3.1 operating system, a message appears as "Reset your colors to
256." While operating on Windows® 3.1, Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase
Through Time™ was designed to run in 256 Colors. The program may not
run properly on an alternate color setting. Check the Video Display
line in Windows Setup to verify that it is set for 256 Colors. These
are the instructions.
- Click the Main icon in Program Manager.
- Double-click the Windows Setup icon.
- Check the Display line to see if it set
for 256 Colors.
- If it is not:
- You may already have one or more
display drivers with this resolution listed. However, in
most cases these display drivers will not work properly and
could cause Windows® to crash. Contact the computer
manufacturer, or the video card manufacturer.
- If you have already obtained the
Windows® display drivers from your computer manufacturer,
please refer to the user's manual for instructions.

running Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time™ on a Machintosh®
PowerPC® with System 7.1.2, a message appears as "ThreadsLib could
not be found." The issue is due to the program requiring the Threads
Manager extension to run properly. This extension is located on the
program CD-ROM and can be installed to resolve the issue. These are
the instructions to install the extension.
- Close all programs that are running.
- Insert the Carmen Sandiego CD into the CD-ROM drive.
- Double-click the Multimedia Extensions folder.
- Double-click then System 7.1.2 Users folder.
- Drag this extension on top of the Closed System folder on
your hard drive.
- Click OK to confirm the transfer of the extension to the
Extensions folder.
- Restart your computer.
- Run the Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time™.

inserting the Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time™ CD into
the CD-ROM drive, the Auto-Run feature of the computer does not
start the installation. Installing the program manually will resolve
the issue. Follow the steps below to
complete a manual installation of the program.
- Verify that the proper CD is inserted into the CD-ROM drive.
- Click Start and select Run. The Run dialog box will open.
- Type X:\SETUP.EXE in the Open: field. (Replace the X with
the letter that identifies your CD-ROM drive.)
- Click OK. The installation of the program should begin.
- Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

How to Check Video Driver
- Double click the MAIN program group.
- Double click the WINDOWS SETUP icon.
- To the right of the DISPLAY listing, make
a note of the current display driver.
How to Change the Display Settings to SVGA 256 COLOR
- Double click the MAIN program group.
- Double click the WINDOWS SETUP icon.
- To the right of the DISPLAY lising make a
note of the current display driver.
- Click options on the menu at the top of
the panel.
- Select CHANGE SYSTEM SETTINGS.
- In the DISPLAY box try to select a driver
from your video card manufacturer (noted above) that is closest
to SVGA 640 by 480 256 color. If you have a choice for SF or LF,
choose SF for small fonts. If you do not see a listing from the
video card manufacturer, select the "plain" SUPER VGA 640 by 480
256 COLOR driver.
- Press the current button to use currently
installed driver.
- Click the RESTART WINDOWS button when
prompted.
WARNING: If your system does not support the video
driver that you selected, the system may not boot into Windows, and
you may need your original driver restored.
- From the DOS prompt type CD WINDOWS or
CD\WINDOWS then ENTER.
- Type SETUP and then press ENTER.
- Using the Up or Down arrow keys, highlight
the Display line and press ENTER.
- Select the original display driver you
made a note of above and press ENTER.
- Press ENTER to accept this list.
- Press ENTER to keep the currently
installed driver.
- Type WIN at the C:\WINDOWS prompt to
return to Windows.
If you still experience difficulty booting into Windows, repeat the
procedure above and select the VGA driver.
We recommend that you consult with your computer and video card
manufacturer to obtain an SVGA 256 COLOR compatible driver for your
system. |

CD Is
Not Recognized |

After
inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive when prompted, the CD is not
recognized. Any number of the following conditions may cause this
issue: wrong CD is being used, CD needs cleaned, CD-ROM drive
settings require changes, or the CD-ROM driver is corrupted,
outdated, or the wrong one. By completing
the procedures that follow, the CD-Read issue may be resolved. Begin
with item one and proceed through the list.
- Verify that the correct CD is being used when prompted to
insert the disc.
- Clean the CD. Place a small amount of nonabrasive, liquid
soap on the shiny side of the disc. Using your fingertips and
warm water, gently rub the soap on the disc in a circular
motion. Rinse the disc thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft
T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or tissue
paper.
- Change the Read Ahead setting in the following manner:
- Return to the desktop and right click on the My Computer
icon.
- Select Properties from the menu that appears and click
on the Performance tab in the Systems Properties window.
- Click the File System button and click the CD-ROM tab.
- Locate Optimize Access Pattern For:.
- Click the arrow to the right of the information field
and select the No Read Ahead option.
- Restart Windows®.
- Verify that the computer is utilizing a 32-bit file system.
In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3 above), click
the Performance tab. Verify that the File System reads 32-bit.
(If it reads anything else, contact the computer manufacturer
for installation of the proper CD-ROM or hard drive drivers.)
- Verify that the most current version of the driver for the
CD-ROM drive is being used. Contact the computer manufacturer
for additional information.
- Try to use a different disc in the CD-ROM drive to see if it
can be read.
- If possible, insert the CD that is not being recognized into
the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if the issue
remains.

Incompatible Version
of the RPC Stub |

attempting to install the program, the message "Error 0x90070725
Incompatible version of the RPC stub" appears. An incorrect version
of the OLEAUT32.DLL file in the System folder causes this issue.
Downloading and installing the correct version of the OLEAUT32.DLL

Installing Great Chase Through Time™ (Windows® XP) |

The
following technical note describes how to install Carmen Sandiego's
Great Chase Through Time™ in Windows® XP. Installing in Windows®
XP
NOTE: Users must have Administrator Privileges to Windows® XP
when installing or running Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through
Time™.
- After logging in to Windows®, insert the Carmen Sandiego's
Great Chase Through Time™ install CD into the CD-ROM drive.
NOTE: If the installation does not begin, complete these
steps to continue:
- Click Start on the Windows® taskbar.
- Click the Control Panel icon. The Control Panel window
will open and the Pick a Category menu will appear. (If the
menu does not appear, then it is likely that the Windows
Classic View option is active. To change views, click Switch
to Category View.)
- Click the Add or Remove Programs icon. (This icon
appears as CD-ROM in front of an open box.) The Add or
Remove Programs window will open.
- Click the Add New Programs icon located on the left side
of the window.
- Click the CD (or Floppy) button. A window will open
entitled: "Install Program from the Floppy Disk or CD-ROM."
The following prompt will also appear: "Insert the first
installation disk or CD-ROM."
- Insert the disk into the appropriate drive (if needed)
and click Next. The Run Installation Program window will
open. Windows® XP will automatically locate the correct
installation file and disk drive. (The Browse button is used
to select a different drive and/or file during the
installation if desired.)
- Click Finish to begin the installation.
NOTE: If the system is setup with multiple user accounts,
a window may appear entitled: "Install Programs as Other User."
Some programs require the user to have Administrative Privileges
in order to run the installation. If assistance is needed to
manipulate user-account settings, refer to the Windows® XP Help
section, the system administrator or contact technical support
for the particular computer. Successful installation of the
program may not be possible without Administrator Privileges.
Click OK to close this window.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to install the program.
NOTE: If you encounter problems and are unable to
successfully install the program, continue with Installing Programs
Using the Program Compatibility Wizard listed below.
Installing Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time™ Using the
Program Compatibility Wizard
Most programs designed for an earlier version of the Windows®
operating system will install and run properly on Windows® XP. In
some instances, however, when attempting to install such a program,
various issues can occur. The information and procedure presented in
this section will help you to install a program (designed for
earlier versions of Windows®) by using the Program Compatibility
Wizard.
NOTE: Windows® XP allows different options for viewing
graphical interface. The following procedure assumes that the
default Windows® XP view settings are used, rather than the Classic
Start Menu View.
- Uninstall the program using the Add or Remove Programs
Control Panel (Steps a-c under Installing in Windows® XP).
- After removing the program, or if the program does not show
in the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel, continue with the
next step.
- Verify the Minimum System Requirements of the program that
is to be installed. (This information will be needed as the
procedure below is completed.)
- Close programs and return to the desktop.
- Insert the program (or installation) CD into the CD-ROM
drive.
NOTE: If a program installation screen appears prompting
you to install the program, click the selection (i.e., No,
Cancel or Exit the Installation, etc.) that will cancel the
installation, and return to the desktop.
- Click Start on the Windows® taskbar.
- Click All Programs, choose Accessories and select Program
Compatibility Wizard. The icon appears as a question mark (?).
The Program Compatibility Wizard Welcome window will open.
- Click Next.
- Click the "I want to use the program in the CD-ROM drive"
radio button.
- Click Next. A window presenting the different Windows®
Compatibility Modes will open.
- Click the radio button next to the desired Compatibility
Mode and click Next. (Consult the Minimum System Requirements of
the program that is to be installed [Step 1] for system
information.) The window that appears allows for the selection
of 256 Colors and/or 640 X 480 Pixel Screen Resolution.
NOTE: These display settings are not available options in
Windows® XP. They are only available when running a program in
Program Compatibility Mode. The only reason to choose either of
these settings is if you are experiencing difficulty installing
or running an older application designed to run in MS-DOS®,
Windows® 3.1 or Windows® 95. If all options remain unchecked,
then the current Colors and Screen Resolution settings will not
be altered.
By default, Windows® XP uses visual themes that may change the
appearance or behavior of other programs, especially those games
or educational programs that include intensive graphics and
animation. To prevent the visual themes from affecting these
programs, check Disable Visual Themes.
- Click Next. A window showing the heading "Test Your
Compatibility Settings" will appear. In addition, the settings
that you selected will appear.
- Verify that the settings are correct.
NOTE: If the settings are not correct, click the Back
button to return to the previous screen (or screens) and make
the necessary changes.
- With the correct settings selected and showing in the "Test
Your Compatibility Settings" window, click Next. The program
installation will begin.
- Follow the prompts to install the program.
- After the installation is complete, close the program to
return to the Program Compatibility Wizard.
NOTE: After the program is closed, the window with the
"Did the program work correctly?" question will reappear. The
"Yes. Set this program to always use these compatibility
settings" will be selected.
- If the program functioned properly using the compatibility
mode that was selected in Step 11 (above), click Next-the
Program Compatibility Data window will open-and continue with
Step 18.
NOTE: If the program did not function correctly,
uninstall the program (using the Add or Remove Programs Control
Panel: Step 1) and repeat the above procedure, choosing
different compatibility settings.
- In the window that opens, select Yes or No and click Next.
The Completing the Program Compatibility Wizard window will
appear.
- Click Finish to close the window.
- Launch and use the program.

Running Great Chase Through Time™ in
Windows® XP |

Windows® XP includes a Compatibility Wizard designed to allow
programs that were written for previous versions of Windows® to run
on Windows® XP. The remainder of this technical note describes using
the Program Compatibility Wizard. The
Program Compatibility Wizard prompts you to test the program in
different modes (environments) and with various settings. For
example, if the program was originally designed to run on Windows®
95, set the compatibility mode to Windows® 95 and try running the
program again. If successful, the program will start in that mode
each time. The wizard also allows the use of different settings,
such as switching the display to 256 colors and the screen
resolution to 640 x 480 pixels.
The Program Compatibility Wizard provides step-by-step instruction
for use. To run the Program Compatibility Wizard, complete the steps
below.
NOTE: Windows® XP allows different options for viewing

Program Compatibility Data window will open.
NOTE: If the program did not function correctly, click
"No, try different compatibility settings" and complete the
Wizard. After completing the wizard, try the program again.
- In the window that opens, select Yes or No and click Next.
The Completing the Program Compatibility Wizard window will
appear.
- Click Finish to close the window.
- Launch (if necessary) and use the program.

MIDI Driver Is in Use
on Windows® XP |

When
launching Carmen Sandiego's Great Chase Through Time™ on a Windows®
XP computer, a message appears indicating that a MIDI driver is in
use. Checking and changing (if needed) the multimedia settings
should help to resolve the issue. Complete
the following procedure to verify multimedia settings and to change
these if needed:
- Close all programs and return to the desktop.
- Click Start and select Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel window, double-click Sounds, Speech,
and Audio Devices.
- Double-click Sounds and Audio Devices.
- Click the Audio tab.
- Click the down arrow next to MIDI Music Playback and change
the Single Instrument selection to MPU-401 (or one most similar
to this).
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Close all open windows and run the program.

Cannot
Find Printer |

When
printing from Carmen Sandiego’s Great Chase Through Time™, the
message ‘Cannot Find Printer’ appears. This issue occurs when the
printer is attached to a USB port and that port is not recognized by
the program. Downloading and installing a print driver to emulate a
LPT connection and setting that printer as the default printer will
help resolve this issue. (LPT is the usual designation for a
parallel port.) Consult the remainder of this technical note for
additional information. Downloading and
Installing an Emulation Driver
Contact the printer manufacturer to obtain an emulation driver. Most
drivers are available and can be downloaded from the printer
manufacturer's website. After downloading the updated driver,
continue with the procedure that follows.
Setting the Updated Printer as the Default Printer
To set the updated printer as the default printer, follow the steps
below for the operating system in use.
Windows® 98/ME
- Double-click My Computer.
- Double-click Printers.
- Right-click on the updated printer and choose Set as
Default. A checkmark will appear beside the printer icon.
- Launch and use the program.
Windows® 2000
- Double-click My Computer.
- Double-click Control Panel.
- Double-click Printers.
- Right-click on the updated printer and choose Set as
Default. A checkmark will appear beside the printer icon.
- Launch and use the program.
Windows® XP
- Click Start and choose Printers and Faxes.
