Font Displays as Symbols or Garbage
|
| |
While
using the program, the fonts appear as symbols or appear garbled.
Some versions of Monotype Sorts will cause our program to display
its fonts as symbols or garbage. You will
need to remove the Monotype Sorts font to resolve this issue.
- Click on Start, choose Settings and Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel, double-click on the Fonts icon.
- When the Fonts window opens up, locate the Monotype Sorts
font.
- Click one time with the right mouse button on the icon for
Monotype Sorts.
- Choose Delete from the list of options. This will remove the
font.
- Try the program. The issue should now be resolved.

Shadow Caused a Segment Load Failure
|
| |
The
message,SHADOW caused a segment load failure, appears when trying to
launch or install the program. You will receive this message if you
try installing the program from DOS.
NOTE: Before closing any background program, consult
the computer manufacturer to identify which programs need to remain
running.
- Verify that no programs are running in the background. To do
this, press and hold down the CTRL and ALT keys at the same
time. While these keys are being pressed, tap the DELETE key
once.
- Release the CTRL and ALT keys. A Close Program window will
open. (In it appears a listing of all of the programs currently
running on the system. For any installation using Windows® 95 or
Windows® 98, two programs must remain active: EXPLORER
and SYSTRAY.)
- Start at the top of the Close Program listing and highlight
a program by clicking on it once.
- Click the End Task button in the lower left corner of the
Close Program window. (Do not click the Shut Down button, as it
will shut down the computer. This will start all programs that
have been closed, requiring that the procedure be repeated from
the beginning.) As a safety feature, only one program can be
closed at time. The Close Program window will close each time
the End Task button is selected. To continue, repeat Step 1 to
reopen the Close Program window.
NOTE: Most programs will close with a single End Task
action. Some programs, however, will require that the End Task
button be selected again. If a message appears indicating that
the program is not responding, click End Task again and proceed.
- When only EXPLORER and SYSTRAY are showing in
the Close Program window, click the Cancel button.
- Insert the Print Shop® 11 Installation CD into the CD-ROM
drive and begin the installation.
- Follow the prompts to complete the installation of Print
Shop® 11.
NOTE: If the auto install does not begin, continue with the
following steps:
- Click Start and select Run. The Run dialog box will open.
- Type X:\SETUP.EXE in the Open: field, where the X represents
the letter drive of the CD-ROM drive.
- Click OK. The installation of Carmen SandiegoJunior
Detective Edition® should begin.
- Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Freezing when Clicking the Travel Button
|

| While
clicking on the Travel button, Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective
Edition® may freeze or lock up. This is a known issue with the
program and older video card drivers.
Contact either your video card manufacturer or your computer
manufacturer for assistance in obtaining the most current video
drivers. |

Freezing at the
Grass Hut (DOS Version) |
| |
While
playing Carmen Sandiego, the program locks up at the grass hut.
When the program reaches this particular part of
the introduction, a Interrupt Request Conflict results because of a
possible mismatch of settings in the setup of the program.
Check the settings for the sound card and for the program to make
sure they match. To do this:
- From the C:\ prompt type SET and press enter.
- Look for the BLASTER= line and write down what it equals.
You
should see something like the following:
BLASTER=A220 I5 D1
H5 P330 T6
- From the Carmen directory (either DELUXE or WORLD)type SETUP
and press enter.
- Highlight Sound Device and press enter.
- Highlight Sound Blaster Pro and press enter.
- Set the I/O port to equal the value for A (220 in the above
example).
- Set the IRQ to equal the value for I (5 in above example).
- Set the DMA Channel to equal the value for D (1 in above
example).
- Set the Music Synthesizer to Sound Blaster Pro.
- Exit setup and run the program.

No Sound After Using Software |

After
running the Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective Edition®, you may not
be able to hear sound for other software applications. The issue is
due to the program adjusting the wave volume control on certain
systems. These are the instructions to hear sound again in other
software by adjusting the Wave volume control.
- Click on Start, select Programs, choose Accessories, and
then select Multimedia (Windows® 95) or Entertainment. (Windows®
98).
- Select Volume Control.
- Locate the Wave volume slider control.
- Raise the Wave volume slider bar at least halfway.
- Close the Volume Control.

Blank Error

When
starting Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective Edition®, a blank error
box appears with a yellow exclamation mark and the option to click
OK. Incorrect Display settings cause this issue. Carmen Sandiego
Junior Detective Edition® requires the Colors or Color Palette
(Windows® 95) setting to be 256 Colors. Changing the Colors (or
Color Palette) to 256 Colors should resolve this issue.
For Windows® 95/98, follow the procedure below to
change the Colors (or Color Palette) setting to 256 Colors. For
Windows® XP, follow the procedure under the
Windows® XP heading to change the compatibility.
Windows® 95/98
- Click Start, select Settings and click Control Panel. The
Control Panel will open.
- Double-click the Display icon. The Display Properties window
will appear.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Click the down arrow under Colors (Windows® 98) or Color
Palette (Windows® 95) and choose 256 Colors.
- Click Apply and click OK.
NOTE: Click Yes if asked: "Do you want to restart the
computer?" If the 256 Colors setting is not available or
difficulty is experienced, contact the computer manufacturer for
assistance.
- Close all open windows and launch Carmen Sandiego Junior
Detective Edition®. The issue should be resolved.
Windows® XP
- Close all open programs and windows and return to the
desktop.
- Right-click the Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective Edition®
shortcut icon and select Properties from the menu that appears.
Opening the Properties window is also possible using the Start
menu in the following manner:
- Click Start and select All Programs.
- Choose Broderbund Software. All programs in the
Broderbund Software group will appear.
- Right-click Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective Edition and
left-click Properties from the menu that appears. The Carmen
Sandiego Junior Detective Edition Properties will appear.
- Click the Compatibility tab at the top.
- Click once in the empty box to the left of "Run in 256
colors."
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Launch and run the program. The issue should be resolved.

Waveform Device Is Busy |

While
starting Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective Edition®, a message may
appear as "Waveform device is busy." These are the instructions for
resolving the issue.
- Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panels.
- Double-click Multimedia.
- Make certain that the Preferred Device line does not refer
to "Wave Device for Voice Modem." If this is the setting, click
the down arrow and then select a different sound setting.
- Click the MIDI tab.
- Ensure that the Single Instrument line is set to a driver
that refers to Synthesizer, FM Synthesis, or MPU-401 Compatible
device. Choose one of these if the line reads otherwise. (Do not
select one that refers to External MIDI.)
- Click Apply and then restart the program.
- If this does not resolve the issue, set the Custom
Configuration channels to the same setting as Single Instrument.
- Click Custom configuration and then click the Configure
button.
- Click Channel 1 and then click the Change button.
- Click the down arrow on the Instrument line and select the
same driver as you selected for Single Instrument.
- Repeat this for Channels 2-10 and 13-16.
- Click OK then click Apply.
- Run Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective Edition® again.
- If the issue persists, try another driver.

Waveform Sound Device Failed to Respond.
|

While
starting Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective Edition®, a message may
appear as "Waveform sound device failed to respond." These are the
instructions for resolving the issue.
- Click Start, select Settings, and then click Control Panels.
- Double-click Multimedia.
- Make certain that the Preferred Device line does not refer
to "Wave Device for Voice Modem." If this is the setting, click
the down arrow and then select a different sound setting.
- Click the MIDI tab.
- Ensure that the Single Instrument line is set to a driver
that refers to either Synthesizer, FM Synthesis, or MPU-401
Compatible device. Choose one of these if the line reads
otherwise. (Do not select one that refers to External MIDI.)
- Click Apply and then restart the program.
- If this does not resolve the issue, set the Custom
Configuration channels to the same setting as Single Instrument.
- Click Custom configuration and then click the Configure
button.
- Click Channel 1 and then click the Change button.
- Click the down arrow on the Instrument line and select the
same driver as you selected for Single Instrument.
- Repeat this for Channels 2-10 and 13-16.
- Click OK then click Apply.
- Run Carmen Sandiego Junior Detective Edition® again.
- If the issue persists, try another driver.

Screen Flashes or
Corrupt Display |

The
screen flashes during transitions or other corrupt display symptoms.
This may be caused by an incompatibility with a background
application from a recent Macromedia Shockwave installation. The
background application is called "Shockwave Remote".
To correct the video corruption, remove the
"Shockwave Init" shortcut from the Startup folder and then restart
the machine.
- Click on Start, then Settings, and then Taskbar &
Start Menu.
- Click the Start Menu Programs tab.
- Click the Remove button.
- Double-click the Startup folder.
- Select the Shockwave Init shortcut icon.
- Click the Remove button.
- Restart your computer.
This TSR controls the Shockwave Remote Control Panel. In the future,
the remote control can be activated from the Start menu by selecting
Shockwave, then Shockwave Remote. |

Auto-Installation Does
Not Begin |

After inserting the Carmen Sandiego
Junior Detective Edition® CD into the CD-ROM drive, the Auto-Run
feature of the computer does not start the installation. Installing
the program manually will resolve the issue.
Follow the steps below to
complete a manual installation of the program.
- Verify that the proper CD is inserted into the
CD-ROM drive.
- Click Start and select Run. The Run dialog
box will open.
- Type X:\SETUP.EXE in the Open: field.
(Replace the X with the letter that identifies your CD-ROM
drive.)
- Click OK. The installation of the program
should begin.
- Follow the prompts to complete the
installation.

How to Check Video Driver
- Double click the MAIN program group.
- Double click the WINDOWS SETUP icon.
- To the right of the DISPLAY listing, make
a note of the current display driver.
How to Change the Display Settings to SVGA 256 COLOR
- Double click the MAIN program group.
- Double click the WINDOWS SETUP icon.
- To the right of the DISPLAY lising make a
note of the current display driver.
- Click options on the menu at the top of
the panel.
- Select CHANGE SYSTEM SETTINGS.
- In the DISPLAY box try to select a driver
from your video card manufacturer (noted above) that is closest
to SVGA 640 by 480 256 color. If you have a choice for SF or LF,
choose SF for small fonts. If you do not see a listing from the
video card manufacturer, select the "plain" SUPER VGA 640 by 480
256 COLOR driver.
- Press the current button to use currently
installed driver.
- Click the RESTART WINDOWS button when
prompted.
WARNING: If your system does not support the video
driver that you selected, the system may not boot into Windows, and
you may need your original driver restored.
- From the DOS prompt type CD WINDOWS or
CD\WINDOWS then ENTER.
- Type SETUP and then press ENTER.
- Using the Up or Down arrow keys, highlight
the Display line and press ENTER.
- Select the original display driver you
made a note of above and press ENTER.
- Press ENTER to accept this list.
- Press ENTER to keep the currently
installed driver.
- Type WIN at the C:\WINDOWS prompt to
return to Windows.
If you still experience difficulty booting into Windows, repeat the
procedure above and select the VGA driver.
We recommend that you consult with your computer and video card
manufacturer to obtain an SVGA 256 COLOR compatible driver for your
system. |

CD Is Not
Recognized |
| |
After
inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive when prompted, the CD is not
recognized. Any number of the following conditions may cause this
issue: wrong CD is being used, CD needs cleaned, CD-ROM drive
settings require changes, or the CD-ROM driver is corrupted,
outdated, or the wrong one. By completing
the procedures that follow, the CD-Read issue may be resolved. Begin
with item one and proceed through the list.
- Verify that the correct CD is being used when prompted to
insert the disc.
- Clean the CD. Place a small amount of nonabrasive, liquid
soap on the shiny side of the disc. Using your fingertips and
warm water, gently rub the soap on the disc in a circular
motion. Rinse the disc thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft
T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or tissue
paper.
- Change the Read Ahead setting in the following manner:
- Return to the desktop and right click on the My Computer
icon.
- Select Properties from the menu that appears and click
on the Performance tab in the Systems Properties window.
- Click the File System button and click the CD-ROM tab.
- Locate Optimize Access Pattern For:.
- Click the arrow to the right of the information field
and select the No Read Ahead option.
- Restart Windows®.
- Verify that the computer is utilizing a 32-bit file system.
In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3 above), click
the Performance tab. Verify that the File System reads 32-bit.
(If it reads anything else, contact the computer manufacturer
for installation of the proper CD-ROM or hard drive drivers.)
- Verify that the most current version of the driver for the
CD-ROM drive is being used. Contact the computer manufacturer
for additional information.
- Try to use a different disc in the CD-ROM drive to see if it
can be read.
- If possible, insert the CD that is not being recognized into
the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if the issue
remains.

Incompatible Version
of the RPC Stub |

| When
attempting to install the program, the message "Error 0x90070725
Incompatible version of the RPC stub" appears. An incorrect version
of the OLEAUT32.DLL file in the System folder causes this issue.
Downloading and installing the correct version of the OLEAUT32.DLL
