Colors Required |
|
Carmen Sandiego Math Detective(tm)
requires that the Colors (Windows(r) 98) or Color Palette (Windows(r)
95) setting be set to at least 256 Colors. (This is a minimum
requirement of the program.) Following a step-by-step procedure will
allow you to change the setting or to verify that 256 Colors is
chosen as one of the Display Settings. |

Complete the following procedure to
change the color settings to 256 colors. 1. Click Start, choose
Settings and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click the Display
icon. 3. In the Display Properties window, select the Settings tab.
4. Near the bottom-left portion of the window, under Colors (Windows(r)
98) or Color Palette (Windows(r) 95), click the drop-down menu and
choose 256 Colors. 5. Click Apply near the bottom-right portion of
the window. 6. Choose Yes if asked, "Do you want to restart the
computer?" NOTE: If 256 Colors is not an available setting, contact
the computer manufacturer for additional assistance and information. |

Auto-Installation Does
Not Begin |
|
After inserting the Carmen
Sandiego Math Detective(tm) CD into the CD-ROM drive, the Auto-Run
feature of the computer does not start the installation. Installing
the program manually will resolve the issue. |
|
Follow the steps below to complete a
manual installation of the program. 1. Verify that the proper CD is
inserted into the CD-ROM drive. 2. Click Start and select Run. The
Run dialog box will open. 3. Type X:\SETUP.EXE in the Open: field.
(Replace the X with the letter that identifies your CD-ROM drive.)
4. Click OK. The installation of the program should begin. 5. Follow
the prompts to complete the installation. |

Basic
Troubleshooting |
|
The following are Basic
Troubleshooting techniques. These steps can be used on any program
to attempt to alleviate any issue. |
|
Basic Troubleshooting 1. Make sure
the machine meets or exceeds the program's minimum system
requirements. 2. Ensure that the Color Depth and Resolution are
configured to match the display settings stated in the Minimum
System Requirements. 3. Close TSRs. Use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to open Task
Manager and close all applications except Explorer and Systray in
ALL Windows(r) platforms except Windows(r) 98 or Windows(r) 98SE,
and Macintosh(r) OS. In Windows(r) 98 or Windows(r) 98SE use
MSCONFIG in the Run line and deselect all the items in the startup
folder (Do NOT use MSCONFIG on a Compaq computer). In Macintosh(r)
OS configure the system to use minimum extensions. 4. After closing
TSRs, uninstall and reinstall, this ensures a CLEAN INSTALL of the
software. 5. Check the model, manufacturer, and properties of the
CD-ROM drive. Configure the CD-ROM drive to Sync Data Transfer and
set the Read Ahead Optimization to No Read-ahead. Also, ensure that
the File System line under the Performance tab in System Properties
says 32bit, and does not say Some drives are using MS-DOS(r)
compatibility mode. If you have MS-DOS(r) drivers please update the
drivers to a 32 bit driver. |

Cannot
Initilize Graphics (Windows(r) 95/98) |
|
When attempting to launch Carmen
Sandiego Math Detective(tm), a message indicating that the graphics
cannot be initialized is received. This issue is usually the result
of an incorrect Display setting. Changing this setting should
resolve the issue. |
|
Complete the following procedure to
change the color settings to 256 colors. 1. Click Start, choose
Settings and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click the Display
icon. 3. In the Display Properties window, select the Settings tab.
4. Near the bottom-left portion of the window, under Colors (Windows(r)
98) or Color Palette (Windows(r) 95), click the drop-down menu and
choose 256 Colors. 5. Click Apply near the bottom-right portion of
the window. 6. Choose Yes if asked, "Do you want to restart the
computer?" NOTE: If 256 Colors is not an available setting, contact
the computer manufacturer for additional assistance and information. |

CD Is
Not Recognized |
|
After inserting the CD into the
CD-ROM drive when prompted, the CD is not recognized. Any number of
the following conditions may cause this issue: wrong CD is being
used, CD needs cleaned, CD-ROM drive settings require changes, or
the CD-ROM driver is corrupted, outdated, or the wrong one. |
|
By completing the procedures that
follow, the CD-Read issue may be resolved. Begin with item one and
proceed through the list. 1. Verify that the correct CD is being
used when prompted to insert the disc. 2. Clean the CD. Place a
small amount of nonabrasive, liquid soap on the shiny side of the
disc. Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on
the disc in a circular motion. Rinse the disc thoroughly and dry it
using a clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper
towels or tissue paper. 3. Change the Read Ahead setting in the
following manner: a. Return to the desktop and right click on the My
Computer icon. b. Select Properties from the menu that appears and
click on the Performance tab in the Systems Properties window. c.
Click the File System button and click the CD-ROM tab. d. Locate
Optimize Access Pattern For:. e. Click the arrow to the right of the
information field and select the No Read Ahead option. f. Restart
Windows(r). 4. Verify that the computer is utilizing a 32-bit file
system. In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3 above),
click the Performance tab. Verify that the File System reads 32-bit.
(If it reads anything else, contact the computer manufacturer for
installation of the proper CD-ROM or hard drive drivers.) 5. Verify
that the most current version of the driver for the CD-ROM drive is
being used. Contact the computer manufacturer for additional
information. 6. Try to use a different disc in the CD-ROM drive to
see if it can be read. 7. If possible, insert the CD that is not
being recognized into the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if
the issue remains. |

as Symbols or Not Recognized |

While using Carmen Sandiego Math
Detective(tm), the fonts display as symbols or are unrecognizable.
Some versions of a font titled Monotype Sorts, which could be
present on your system, usually causes this issue. Deleting this
font from the system should allow the program to display properly. |
|
Follow the steps below to remove the
Monotype Sorts font from the system. 1. Exit all programs, and
return to the desktop. 2. Click Start, choose Settings and select
Control Panel. 3. In the Control Panel window, double-click the
Fonts icon. 4. When the Fonts window opens, right-click once on the
icon that represents the Monotype Sorts font. 5. In the menu that
appears, left-click Delete. This should remove the font from the
system. 6. Launch Carmen Sandiego Math Detective(tm). The program
should display properly. |

MathDt_W.dxr -45 |
|
When attempting to start Carmen
Sandiego Math Detective(tm) on a Windows(r) 95 system, the message
"Problem opening MathDt_W.dxr -45" is received. Using a 16-bit, as
opposed to a 32-bit, file system typically causes this error.
Verifying that the system is a 32-bit system and updating to the
correct drivers should resolve the issue. |

Complete the procedure below to
verify that the proper file system is in use. 1. Exit all programs
and return to the desktop. 2. Right-click the My Computer icon. 3.
Choose Properties from the list that appears. 4. In the Systems
Properties window, click the Performance tab. 5. Verify that the
File System and Virtual Memory data lines display 32-bit. (If
something other than 32-bit shows in either of these lines, contact
the computer or CD-ROM manufacturer for the correct and most
recently released versions of 32-bit drivers.) Checking CD-ROM
Driver 1. In the System Properties window (Steps 1-3 above), click
the Device Manager tab. 2. In the list that appears, locate CD-ROM.
3. Click the plus sign (+) before the CD-ROM listing. If a yellow
circle with a black exclamation mark (!) is next to the CD-ROM
driver line, or no CD-ROM device type is listed, it is possible that
the CD-ROM driver is not a 32-bit Windows(r) 95 driver. (It is also
possible that both 32-bit and 16-bit CD-ROM drivers are at work at
the same time on the system.) 4. Contact the CD-ROM drive
manufacturer or the computer manufacturer for further assistance
with updating the device drivers. |

Requires 256 Colors (Windows(r) 95) |
|
When launching Carmen Sandiego
Math Detective(tm), a message appears stating that the program
requires 256 Colors. Carmen Sandiego Math Detective(tm) requires
that the Color Palette setting (Window(r) 95) be set to 256 Colors.
This is a minimum system requirement of the program. |

Complete the following procedure to
change the color settings to 256 colors. 1. Click Start, choose
Settings and then click Control Panel. 2. Double-click the Display

Read Only File MSVCRT.DLL
Found |
|
During the installation of Carmen
Sandiego Math Detective(tm), the message "Read Only File MSVCRT.DLL
found" is received. This message is caused by a conflict between two
different versions of the same MSVCRT.DLL file. Continuing with the
installation should resolve the issue. |
|
The message typically appears during
the installation of RSX 3D by Intel(r). Responding Yes to the prompt
to overwrite the file should allow the installation to continue. |
|

|
Screen Flashes or
Corrupted Display |
|
While using Carmen Sandiego Math
Detective(tm), the screen flashes during transitions or shows
additional corrupted display symptoms. This issue could be caused by
a conflict between Carmen Sandiego Math Detective(tm) and a
background application. Removing the shortcut to this background
application from the Startup folder should resolve the issue. |
|
Follow the instructions below to
remove the Macromedia(r) Shockwave(r) Init shortcut from the Startup
folder. NOTE: Shockwave(r) Init is a TSR (terminate and stay
resident) program that controls the Shockwave(r) Remote Control
Panel. In the future, the remote control can be activated from the
Start Programs Menu by selecting Shockwave(r), then Shockwave(r)
Remote. 1. Click Start, select Settings and choose Taskbar & Start
Menu. 2. In the Taskbar Properties window, click the Start Menu
Programs tab. 3. Click the Remove button. 4. In the Remove
Shortcuts/Folders window, double-click the Startup folder. 5. In the
list that appears, select the Shockwave(r) Init shortcut icon by
clicking it once. 6. Click the Remove button. 7. Close the windows
and restart the computer. |

Static or Popping
Sounds (Windows(r) 95) |
|
While playing Carmen Sandiego
Math Detective(tm), static or popping sounds are heard. An incorrect
audio setting can cause this condition. Verifying that the correct
setting has been applied and changing that setting if needed should
help to resolve the issue. |
|
To check for the proper audio
setting, complete the procedure below. 1. Close programs and return
to the desktop. 2. Click Start, choose Programs, and select Intel(r)
RSX 3D. 3. In the window that opens, choose the Configuration
option. This will open the Configuration control panel. 4. In the
Configuration control panel window, select the Audio Peripherals
tab. 5. In the section entitled Select Your Audio Peripheral, verify
that a checkmark is in the box by the selection Use RSX True 3D
Sound. NOTE: If a checkmark is present, click once on this checkmark
to remove it. The checkmark should disappear. 6. Click Apply and
click OK. 7. Start the program. The sound issue should be resolved.
NOTE: If the above procedure did not resolve the sound issue,
uninstall the Intel(r) RSX 3D program in the following manner: 1.
Close programs and return to the desktop. 2. Click Start, choose
Settings, and select Control Panel. 3. Double-click the Add/Remove
Programs icon. 4. Click the Intel RSX 3D listing to select it. 5.
Click the Add/Remove button to remove Intel(r) RSX 3D sound. 6.
Close windows and start the program. The issue should be resolved. |

System Freezes
After Clicking Travel Button |
|
While using Carmen Sandiego Math
Detective(tm), the system freezes after you click the Travel Button.
Typically, an outdated video driver causes this issue. Updating to
the most current driver should help to resolve the issue. |
|
The following procedure will help
collect video driver information. Collecting Video Driver
Information NOTE: The driver (make and model information) is found
in the Device Manager in the System Properties window. 1. Return to
the desktop and right-click once on the My Computer icon. 2. Using
the left mouse button, click Properties in the menu that appears. 3.
Click the Device Manager tab in the Systems Properties window. 4.
Find Display Adapters and click the Plus (+) sign before it. 5.
Double-click the driver name that appears and click the Driver tab
in the window. (The date of the driver currently installed should be
displayed.) 6. Record the information. NOTE: Video driver updates
can be obtained from the appropriate manufacturer's web site, or by
contacting the computer manufacturer for update and download
information. |
