Fonts View as Symbols |
|
While running
Compton's® Encyclopedia 2000 Standard, the fonts may appear as
unrecognized symbols. This issue may occur when IBM® Aptiva® or
Lotus® Smartsuite® is installed on your system. The latter installs
a Monotype Sorts font that conflicts with one of the six standard
Windows® fonts. Monotype Sorts may be deleted without adverse
effects as it is not used by any program. The procedure below will
resolve the issue. |
Solution 1:
- Click Start, choose Settings and then select
Control Panel.
- Double-click the Fonts icon.
- The fonts will appear in alphabetical order.
Look for Monotype Sorts and then click once on the font so that it
is highlighted.
- Press the Delete key on the keyboard. You may
have to click Yes to place it in the Recycle Bin.
Solution 2:
Your font substitutes table may be incorrect or missing.
Alternately, you may be missing one of the six standard Windows®
fonts.
- Click on Start and then select Run.
- Type WIN.INI in the Open box and press
Enter.
- Scroll through the file that appears until you
locate the section labeled [FontSubstitutes].
- Beneath the [FontSubstitutes] entry, you must
have all four of the following lines:
Helv=MS Sans Serif
Tms Rmn=MS Serif
Times=Times New Roman
Helvetica=Arial
- If any of these lines are missing, or if the
entry for one of the lines varies, type in the lines exactly as
they appear above.
- Select File on the menu bar then choose Save.
Now select File and then choose Exit. Restart Windows®.
Solution 3:
If your WIN.INI Font Substitutes table is correct, or if the problem
persists after correcting the Font Substitutes section, either a
Windows® system font is damaged, missing or one of the non-system
fonts is causing a conflict.
- Ensure that all the fonts on the right side of
the Font Substitutes table (after the "=") are present in the
Fonts window.
- Look for any fonts on the left side of the
table (before the "=") and delete any of these fonts (namely, Helv,
Helvetica, or Times) from the Fonts window through the method
described in Solution 1.
