Failed to Open File
|
| |
When
launching COSMOPOLITAN™ Virtual Makeover® 2003, a message similar to
the following appears: "Failed to open file D:\Sounds\Track1.wav."
(While the path differs from one computer to the next, the message
generally refers to a sound [.wav] file.) This issue typically
occurs when the CD cannot be read. The remainder of this technical
note describes how to proceed. Complete the
following troubleshooting suggestions to identify the source of the
issue.
NOTE: Before completing the following procedures, verify that
the correct CD is inserted in the CD-ROM drive.
Try the CD in a Different Drive
On computers that use multiple drives (e.g., CD-ROM and DVD, CD-RW
and DVD, etc.), the system will sometimes search for data on a drive
that does not include the program CD.
If the above error appears when attempting to launch COSMOPOLITAN™
Virtual Makeover® 2003, remove the CD from its current drive and
insert it into one of the remaining CD or DVD drives. Wait 30
seconds and try to launch the program. If the issue remains, or
another CD or DVD drive does not exist on that computer, continue
with the next procedure.
Clean the COSMOPOLITAN™ Virtual Makeover® 2003 CD
- Place a small amount of nonabrasive, liquid soap on the
shiny side of the COSMOPOLITAN™ Virtual Makeover® 2003 CD.
- Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on
the CD in a circular motion.
- Rinse the CD thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft
T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or tissue
paper.
- Insert the CD into the CD drive, wait 30 seconds and launch
the program.
- If the error reappears, continue with the next procedure.
Change the Read Ahead Setting
- Close any open programs and return to the desktop.
- Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties from
the menu that appears. The System Properties window appears.
- Click the Performance tab and verify that the File System
reads 32-bit. (If it reads anything else, stop here and contact
the computer manufacturer for installation of the proper CD-ROM
or hard drive drivers.)
- Click the File System button and click the CD-ROM tab.
- Locate Optimize Access Pattern For.
- Click the arrow to the right of the information field and
select the No Read Ahead option.
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Click Close and click Yes when prompted to restart the
computer.
- When the computer restarts, verify that the correct CD is in
the drive and try the program again.
- If the error reappears, continue with the next procedure.
Turn off DMA
- In the System Properties window (found in Step 2 previous
procedure), click the Device Manager tab.
- Choose View Devices By Type. In the list that appears,
locate CD-ROM or CD-ROM Controller.
- Click the plus (+) sign next to this listing.
- Double-click on the name that appears.
- In the Properties window, click the Settings tab. Find the
DMA checkbox and remove the checkmark (if one exists).
- Click OK.
- Verify that the correct CD is in the drive and try the
program again.
NOTE: If the error reappears, continue with the following:
Verify that the most current version of the driver or firmware for
the CD-ROM drive is used. Contact the computer manufacturer for
additional information.
Try to use a different CD in the CD-ROM drive to see if it can be
read.
If possible, insert the problem CD into the CD-ROM drive of
another computer to see if the issue remains.

360-Degree Hairstyle Rotation Feature |
| |
COSMOPOLITAN™ Virtual Makeover® 2003 contains a 360-degree hairstyle
rotation feature for some hairstyles. At times, it may appear that
this feature is not functioning properly. Consult the remainder of
this technical note for a description of the 360-degree hairstyle
rotation feature. The hairstyle rotation
feature applies to many hairstyles included in the program. Hats or
other accessories cannot be rotated using this feature.
NOTE: Not all hairstyles are supported by this feature. If
the Rotation button (an arrow forming an oval shape) is faded or
grayed-out, the selected hairstyle cannot be rotated. |

Unable to
View Entire Window |
| |
When
running COSMOPOLITAN™ Virtual Makeover® 2003, the entire window does
not display and some of the text is cut off or not visible. This
occurs when the resolution (Screen Area or Desktop Area) is set to
640 x 480. To properly view the entire COSMOPOLITAN™ Virtual
Makeover® 2003 screen, a resolution of at least 800 x 600 pixels is
required. Though the packaging may indicate that a setting of 640 x
480 pixels is sufficient to run the program, the information on the
packaging is incorrect. Verifying that the resolution is set to 800
x 600 or 1024 x 768 will allow the entire COSMOPOLITAN™ Virtual
Makeover® 2003 screen to display properly. View the remainder of
this technical note for the procedure.
Complete the following procedure to adjust the resolution:
- Close all programs and windows and return to the desktop.
- Right-click an open area of the desktop (without shortcuts)
and click (left mouse button) Properties. The Display Properties
will open.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Slide the Screen Area or Desktop Area needle to the right
(or left) until 800 x 600 pixels or 1024 x 768 pixels appears.
- Click Apply.
- Choose Yes if asked, "Do you want to restart the computer?"
- Click OK to close the Display Properties.
- Launch and use the program.
