Issue Installing DinoPark Tycoon® on Windows® 95
Description Older MECC programs designed to run in MS-DOS may need modifications so that they will run in Windows® 95. Although DinoPark Tycoon® is not designed to run on Windows® 95, making the modifications should allow the program to install and operate.
Solution Complete the following steps to install DinoPark Tycoon® on a Windows® 95 operating system.
Viewing Files and Their Extensions

  1. Close programs and all windows and return to the desktop.
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  3. Click View in the menu and then choose Options.
  4. In the window that opens, click the View tab.
  5. Click Show All Files and Display Full MS-DOS Path.
NOTE: If Hide Extensions is checked, uncheck it.
  6. Click Apply and click OK.
  7. Close the My Computer window.

Installing the Program

  1. Insert the program CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start and select Run.
  3. Type D:\Install.exe in the Open: field. (The letter D represents the letter of your CD-ROM drive. If another letter represents your CD-ROM drive, use that letter when typing the information in the Open: field.)
  4. Click OK.
  5. Follow the installation prompts to install the program.
  6. When the installation is complete, remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive.

Changing the Properties of the DOS-based Executable

  1. Click Start, select Programs and select Windows® Explorer.
  2. In Windows® Explorer, look down the left side of the window for the MECC folder on the C: drive.
  3. Double-click the MECC folder to open it.
  4. In the MECC folder, double-click the DinoPark folder to open it.
  5. In the DinoPark folder, locate the executable file for the application.

NOTE: In nearly all cases, the executable file will end in .exe (e.g. stories.exe, oregon.exe or sm.exe). In a few cases, the executable file ends in .com.

  6. Right-click the executable file and select Properties.
  7. In the Properties window, click the Program tab.
  8. Click Advanced.
  9. Verify that MS-DOS is unchecked.
  10. Place a check mark in these boxes: Prevent MS-DOS based programs and Suggest MS-DOS.
  11. Click OK.
  12. Close the Properties window by clicking OK.
  13. Close Windows® Explorer and return to the desktop.

Creating a Shortcut to Launch the Program

  1. Right-click on the desktop away from any icons or items that may be present. A menu will appear.
  2. Select New and choose Shortcut from the list that appears.
  3. Click Browse.
  4. Verify that the Look in: field shows the drive where the program was installed. (Typically this is the C: drive.)
  5. Double-click the MECC folder.
  6. Double-click the DinoPark folder.
  7. Double-click the executable file. (See Step 4 above.)
  8. Click Next and click Finish. A shortcut will be placed on the desktop.
  9. Move the shortcut to your desired location on the desktop.
  10. To launch the program, double-click the shortcut icon.

Additional Notes

bulletA few programs create their folders directly off of the C: drive. If you do not find the application in the MECC folder, look directly on the C: drive and follow the instructions above.
bulletIn some cases MECC programs will not appear on the Programs list when you click Start and select Programs. Only programs designed for Windows® will appear on this list.
bulletSome DOS-based programs will run in Windows® 95, but the sound and music will not operate. To hear the sound and music, try running the program in MS-DOS mode:

  1. Click Start and choose Shut Down.
  2. Choose Restart in MS-DOS MODE.

NOTE: For the mouse to work in this mode, a DOS-based mouse driver must be installed. The Windows® 95 driver is called mouse.drv. The DOS-based driver is usually called mouse.com. You may have a mouse.com on your computer already; if not, please contact your mouse manufacturer or www.microsoft.com for a DOS-based mouse driver for your mouse.
