Issue Screen Flashes or Corrupted Display
Description  
Solution While using The Cat in the Hat (Living Books®), the screen flashes during transitions or shows additional corrupted display symptoms. A conflict between The Cat in the Hat (Living Books®) and a background application can cause this issue. Removing the shortcut to this background application from the Startup folder should resolve the issue. Follow the instructions below to remove the Macromedia® Shockwave® Init shortcut from the Startup folder.

NOTE: Shockwave® Init is a TSR (terminate and stay resident) program that controls the Shockwave® Remote Control Panel. In the future, the remote control can be activated from the Start Programs Menu by selecting Shockwave®, then Shockwave® Remote.
  1. Click Start, select Settings and choose Taskbar & Start Menu.
     
  2. In the Taskbar Properties window, click the Start Menu Programs tab.
     
  3. Click the Remove button.
     
  4. In the Remove Shortcuts/Folders window, double-click the Startup folder.
     
  5. In the list that appears, select the Shockwave® Init shortcut icon by clicking on it once.
     
  6. Click the Remove button.
     
  7. Close the windows and restart the computer.
 
Issue 256 Colors Required
Description  
Solution The Cat in the Hat (Living Books®) requires that the Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95) setting be set to 256 Colors. (This is a minimum requirement of the program.) Following a step-by-step procedure will allow you to change the setting or to verify that 256 Colors is chosen as one of the Display Settings. Complete the following procedure to change the color settings to 256 colors.
  1. Click Start, choose Settings and then click Control Panel.
     
  2. Double-click the Display icon.
     
  3. In the Display Properties window, select the Settings tab.
     
  4. Near the bottom-left portion of the window, under Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95), click the drop-down menu and choose 256 Colors.
     
  5. Click Apply near the bottom-right portion of the window.
     
  6. Choose Yes if asked, "Do you want to restart the computer?"
NOTE: If 256 Colors is not an available setting, contact the computer manufacturer for additional assistance and information.

Issue Auto-Installation Does Not Begin
Description  
Solution After inserting The Cat in the Hat (Living Books®) CD into the CD-ROM drive, the Auto-Run feature of the computer does not start the installation. Installing the program manually will resolve the issue. Follow the steps below to complete a manual installation of the program.
  1. Verify that the proper CD is inserted into the CD-ROM drive.
     
  2. Click Start and select Run. The Run dialog box will open.
     
  3. Type D:\SETUP.EXE in the Open: field. (The letter D represents the CD-ROM drive. If a different letter represents your CD-ROM drive, use that letter when typing the information in the Open: field.)
     
  4. Click OK. The installation of the program should begin.
     
  5. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
 
Issue Display Settings/Driver in Windows 3.1

How to Check Video Driver
  1. Double click the MAIN program group.
     
  2. Double click the WINDOWS SETUP icon.
     
  3. To the right of the DISPLAY listing, make a note of the current display driver.




How to Change the Display Settings to SVGA 256 COLOR
  1. Double click the MAIN program group.
     
  2. Double click the WINDOWS SETUP icon.
     
  3. To the right of the DISPLAY lising make a note of the current display driver.
     
  4. Click options on the menu at the top of the panel.
     
  5. Select CHANGE SYSTEM SETTINGS.
     
  6. In the DISPLAY box try to select a driver from your video card manufacturer (noted above) that is closest to SVGA 640 by 480 256 color. If you have a choice for SF or LF, choose SF for small fonts. If you do not see a listing from the video card manufacturer, select the "plain" SUPER VGA 640 by 480 256 COLOR driver.
     
  7. Press the current button to use currently installed driver.
     
  8. Click the RESTART WINDOWS button when prompted.




WARNING: If your system does not support the video driver that you selected, the system may not boot into Windows, and you may need your original driver restored.
 
  1. From the DOS prompt type CD WINDOWS or CD\WINDOWS then ENTER.
     
  2. Type SETUP and then press ENTER.
     
  3. Using the Up or Down arrow keys, highlight the Display line and press ENTER.
     
  4. Select the original display driver you made a note of above and press ENTER.
     
  5. Press ENTER to accept this list.
     
  6. Press ENTER to keep the currently installed driver.
     
  7. Type WIN at the C:\WINDOWS prompt to return to Windows.
     

If you still experience difficulty booting into Windows, repeat the procedure above and select the VGA driver.

We recommend that you consult with your computer and video card manufacturer to obtain an SVGA 256 COLOR compatible driver for your system.
