The audio tape seems to be for French

audio tape included with the software indicates it is for Learn to
Speak French™. In some shipments, the

Spanish tape, but was packaged as for the French series. When the

Unable to record
|
| |
The
customer is unable to record and play back his/her voice in the
program Almost all of the software that we
publish has some recording capability, often with built-in speech
recognition. Sometimes, customers experience difficulty when they
attempt to record their own voices for playback. The following
procedure is some basic trouble-shooting that should help remedy the
most basic problems with recording in Windows® 95 & 98.
First, we must establish that you are actually not recording at
all. To do so, we'll run a quick check using Sound Recorder, which
is built in to Windows.
- Click on Start, then Programs, then Accessories.
- Windows® 95 - Click on Multimedia, then Sound Recorder.
- Windows® 98 - Click on Entertainment, then Sound
Recorder.
- A window that looks something like the controls for a tape
deck should appear.
- Click on the Record button (with the red circle in it) to
record a test message. "Testing 1, 2, 3" usually works pretty
well. When you have finished, click on the Stop button (with the
black square in it).
- To play back your test, click on the Play button,
immediately to the left of the Stop button. It has a single
triangle that points to the right. Watch the green line closely.
- If it wiggles a lot but you don't hear anything, verify
that your speakers are plugged in properly and turned on,
and that all of your volume controls are properly set.
- If it doesn't wiggle at all, this is an indication that
you are not recording sound. Go on to the next procedure.
Having verified that you are not able to record:
- Click on Start, then Programs, then Accessories.
- Windows® 95 - Click on Multimedia, then Volume Control.
- Windows® 98 - Click on Entertainment, then Volume
Control.
A window called Volume Control should appear.
- Click on the Options menu, then select Properties. A
Properties window should open.
- Inside the Properties window, under Adjust Volume For, click
on Recording to select it.
- Verify that there is a check mark in every box listed at the
bottom of the Properties window, and then click on OK.
You should now see a window called Recording Controls.
- Find the column labeled Microphone Balance.
- Verify that the volume is turned up, and look for a check
mark in the Select box at the bottom of the slider.
- If there is not a check mark in the Select box, click on the empty box
to place a check mark there. This should activate your
microphone. Test it again in Sound Recorder (see previous
procedure).
- If there is a check mark, then you may not have your
microphone plugged in correctly, or may be experiencing
problems with some other component of your computer. Please
contact the manufacturer.

Program freezes after recording |
| |
| If
your program freezes after recording, the following information may
be useful. The Speech Recognition engine
is a very sophisticated piece of software, and requires a large
amount of your computer's resources to run. Because this module of
the program is so large and intricate, it requires a few seconds in
between recordings to reset the voice input buffers. If you are
encountering a program freeze after trying to record, try waiting at
least 8-10 seconds in between recording attempts. You should also
wait until you see the red status indicator begin scrolling before
you attempt to speak into the microphone after clicking on the
record button. |

removing background processes and continue from there.
To remove background processes:
- Click on the Start button and select Run.
- On the Open line, type MSCONFIG.
- Click OK.
- From this window, choose Selective Start Up.
- Remove the check mark next to Load Start Up Programs and
then click OK.
- Your Computer will prompt you to Restart, click Yes to

This will clear most Start Up items from the System Registry,
including most Anti-Virus Programs.
To reinstall the program:
- Place the first Learn to Speak™ program disc in the CD-ROM
drive.
- Close all open programs and windows.
- When you see the Learn to Speak™ window appear, click on

- The computer will again prompt you to restart. Click on Yes.
When your computer reboots, the original configuration will be
reinstated, and any background processes you had running before
executing these instructions will once again be present on your
system.
If, after performing the above steps, you are still receiving the
error message, follow the steps for Removing your background
processes each time you run the program.
Windows® 95
To remove the program's corrupted installation:
- Click on Start, and then Settings, then Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel, double click the Add/Remove Programs
icon.
- In the Add/Remove Programs window, locate the Learn to Speak
program in the list and then click the Add/Remove button in the
lower left.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the uninstall
process.
NOTE: If you encounter problems while
attempting to uninstall the program, simply skip to the section on
removing background processes and continue from there.
To remove background processes:
- Close all open programs and windows.
- From the default desktop, hold down the CTRL and ALT keys,
and then press the DELETE key one time. This will not reboot
your computer unless you do this key sequence two times in row.
- You should now have the CLOSE PROGRAM window displayed on
your computer screen. The items in this list are often referred
to as TSRs which stand for Terminate and Stay Resident programs.
These programs are currently running on your computer - whether
you know what they are or not. They are using system resources
and accessing shared system files.
- There are only two items on the CLOSE PROGRAM window that
should be listed…. Explorer and Systray. Explorer is the name of
your Windows® 95 software interface - for Windows® 95 to be
running, Explorer must be listed. Systray controls the toolbar
tray where minimized icons are stored. Everything else is
considered a TSR running 'in the background' and could
potentially interfere with the installation of software.
- You should highlight any item, in turn, that is not the
Explorer or Systray and click the End Task button on the lower
left portion of the CLOSE PROGRAM screen.
- The CLOSE PROGRAM screen will disappear and you will have to
use the CTRL + ALT + DELETE key sequence to bring it back.
- Continue highlighting and clicking on end task on all of the
items until only Explorer and Systray remain in the CLOSE
PROGRAM window, then click CANCEL to return to the desktop. If
you 'end task' on a TSR and it appears to be needed by your
computer, simply re-boot your computer and don't 'end task' on
that one item the next time.
It is important to note that some of these TSRs may be required by
certain PCs and that on rare occasions turning off certain TSRs may
cause your system to not re-start properly. If you are uncertain how
to follow these instructions or if you have any concerns please
contact your computer manufacturer. In particular, if you own a
computer that is pre-manufactured with all components already
installed, (such as Compaq, Packard Bell, Aptiva, and many others)
you should contact your computer manufacturer to assist you in
following these instructions.
To reinstall the program:
- Place the first Learn to Speak™ program disc in the CD-ROM
drive.
- Close all open programs and windows.
- When you see the Learn to Speak™ window appear, click on
Exit.
- Double click on My Computer.
- Click the right mouse button on the CD-ROM icon.
- From the popup menu, select Explore. You will see a split
screen window appear.
- In the right window, locate and double click on LTSSetup.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the
installation process.
You should now be able to successfully run the program.
If, after performing the above steps, you are still receiving the
error message, follow the steps for Removing your background
processes each time you run the program.

Why
Don't The Other Disks Install? |
| |
| What
are the other disks used for? Many of our
programs come on multiple-CD sets, as the multimedia-intensive
material is simply too large to fit on 1 CD-ROM. Disk 1 contains the
program files that need to be installed to the computer. The other
disks contain additional data that does not get installed; the
program is designed to ask for a specific disk when it's ready for
the information contained on the disk. You should always start the
program with Disk 1 in the drive and only insert one of the other
CDs when the program asks for it. |

ISSET_SE Caused a General Protection Fault...
|
| |
During
the installation of Hablemos Inglés™, the error message "ISSET_SE
caused a GPF in module [various]" may appear. This issue is most
often due to an anti-virus program running in the background, in
addition, using Point32 or MSWheel mouse programs may cause the
error. The issue may also due to a conflict between the mouse driver
and the actual mouse device being used. Closing all TSRs, or
installing the correct mouse driver should resolve the issue.
Closing Background Applications
- Make sure there are no programs running in the background.
Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys at the same time. While these
keys are being pressed, tap the Delete key once.
- This will open a "Close Program" window, listing all the
programs that are currently running. It is necessary to close
all programs except Explorer and Systray. To do this,
click on a name in the list, then click on the "End Task"
button. The display will return to the desktop. Press
Ctrl-Alt-Delete to return to the Close Program window.
- Continue closing all background programs until just Explorer
and Systray are shown in the Close Program window, then press
the Cancel button.
Note: Some virus-scan programs, such as Norton Anti-Virus, must be
disabled before the above procedure will work. Consult your
Anti-Virus' program documentation for instructions on how to
temporarily disable it.
Verify the Correct Mouse Driver
- In the device manager, compare the listed mouse driver with
the actual mouse attached to the computer.
- If the listed mouse driver is incorrect, remove and
re-install your mouse drivers.

CD Is Not
Recognized |
| |
After
inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive when prompted, the CD is not
recognized. Any number of the following conditions may cause this
issue: wrong CD is being used, CD needs cleaned, CD-ROM drive
settings require changes, or the CD-ROM driver is corrupted,
outdated, or the wrong one. By completing
the procedures that follow, the CD-Read issue may be resolved. Begin
with item one and proceed through the list.
- Verify that the correct CD is being used when prompted to
insert the disc.
- Clean the CD. Place a small amount of nonabrasive, liquid
soap on the shiny side of the disc. Using your fingertips and
warm water, gently rub the soap on the disc in a circular
motion. Rinse the disc thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft
T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or tissue
paper.
- Change the Read Ahead setting in the following manner:
- Return to the desktop and right click on the My Computer
icon.
- Select Properties from the menu that appears and click
on the Performance tab in the Systems Properties window.
- Click the File System button and click the CD-ROM tab.
- Locate Optimize Access Pattern For:.
- Click the arrow to the right of the information field
and select the No Read Ahead option.
- Restart Windows®.
- Verify that the computer is utilizing a 32-bit file system.
In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3 above), click
the Performance tab. Verify that the File System reads 32-bit.
(If it reads anything else, contact the computer manufacturer
for installation of the proper CD-ROM or hard drive drivers.)
- Verify that the most current version of the driver for the
CD-ROM drive is being used. Contact the computer manufacturer
for additional information.
- Try to use a different disc in the CD-ROM drive to see if it
can be read.
- If possible, insert the CD that is not being recognized into
the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if the issue
remains.
