Windows® XP
Compatibility |
| |
When
attempting to launch Kid Pix® Deluxe 3 on a system running Windows®
XP, this message appears: "This version of Kid Pix Studio Deluxe
v.3.0 has a known compatibility issue with speech functionality when
used with this version of Windows. To run the program, click
Continue. For more information, click Details." An incorrect
interpretation of data during the installation causes this issue.
Installing the Microsoft® Speech API 4.0 from the Kid Pix® Deluxe
3.0 CD should resolve the issue. Consult the data that follows for
additional information and a resolution.
Kid Pix® Deluxe 3 relies on SAPI 4.x for speech functionality.
Windows® XP is packaged with a later version (SAPI 5.0). The Kid
Pix® Deluxe 3 installer interprets Windows® XP as Windows NT®. Since
Windows NT® ships with the proper speech.dll component, the
installer skips this part of the installation process. Because
Windows® XP does not ship with speech.dll installed, the Text to
Speech feature of Kid Pix® does not work.
Follow the procedure below to install the Microsoft® Speech API 4.0
from the Kid Pix® Deluxe 3.0 CD.
- Place the Kid Pix® Deluxe 3.0 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
- Close all programs and windows and return to the desktop.
- Click Start and select Run. The Run dialog box will appear.
- Type X:\INSTALL\DATA\SPCHAPI.EXE in the Open: field.
(Replace X with the correct drive letter that represents the
CD-ROM drive containing the Kid Pix® Deluxe 3.0 CD.)
- Click OK. This will install Microsoft® Speech API 4.0 to the
C:\Windows\Speech folder.
- When the file copy is complete, click Start and select Shut
Down.
- Select the option for Restart and click OK to restart.
- When the restart is complete, log into Windows® as a user
with Administrator rights.
NOTE: On a system running Windows® XP, you must be logged
into Windows® as a user with Administrator rights to use all of
the features of Kid Pix® Deluxe 3.
- Open and use Kid Pix® Deluxe 3. The issue should be
resolved.

Text to Speech Feature Does Not Work |
| |
After
installing Kid Pix® Deluxe 3, the Text to Speech feature does not
work. This issue typically results when specific data is incorrectly
interpreted during the install process. Installing the Microsoft®
Speech API 4.0 from the Kid Pix® Deluxe 3.0 CD should resolve the
issue. Consult the data that follows for additional information and
a resolution. Kid Pix® Deluxe 3 relies on
SAPI 4.x for speech functionality. Windows® XP is packaged with a
later version (SAPI 5.0). The Kid Pix® Deluxe 3 installer interprets
Windows® XP as Windows NT®. Since Windows NT® ships with the proper
speech.dll component, the installer skips this part of the
installation process. Because Windows® XP does not ship with
speech.dll installed, the Text to Speech feature of Kid Pix® does
not work.
- When the restart is complete, open and use Kid Pix® Deluxe

Upload Process Freezes or Is Slow |
| |
When
attempting to upload a Kid Pix® Deluxe 3 picture or movie to send in
an e-mail, the upload process takes a long time and appears to
freeze. There are several possibilities that can cause this issue.
The remainder of this technical note describes how to proceed.
When uploading a Kid Pix® picture or movie,
consider the following:
- Internet Connection Type and Speed: Connections to the
Internet (i.e., modem, cable, etc.) and the connection speed all
affect the efficiency at which an upload occurs. Dial-up
connections are noticeably slower.
- File Size: As expected, larger files take longer to upload.
Coupled with a dial-up connection (modem), it is common for an
upload of a large file to take several minutes to complete.
- If prompted to install the Upload Plug-In when attempting to
upload a picture or movie, click Yes.
- If, after successfully connecting to the Internet, the
upload process appears to freeze, wait a couple of minutes
before attempting to cancel the upload. As stated above, many
factors affect the speed at which a picture or movie is
uploaded.

Printer Is Unavailable in Classic Mode on Mac OS®
X |
| |
When
launching an application (such as Kid Pix® Deluxe 3) in Classic Mode
on Mac OS® X, the printer installed to the Mac OS® X Print Center is
unavailable to the program. This occurs because Classic applications
continue to use the Mac OS® 9 Chooser even though they are running
when Mac OS® X is active. Adding the printer to the Chooser will
allow the Classic application to recognize the printer. Consult the
remainder of this note for the procedure.
Complete these steps:
- With the Classic application active, click the Apple menu
and click Chooser.
- Select the desired printer from the window that opens and
double-click it to begin setting it up.
- If prompted, follow the instructions to complete the setup
process. Once this procedure is complete, this printer will be
available in any Classic application.
NOTE: While Mac OS® 9 and the Classic environment do not
provide tools to limit access to file or folders, the Classic
environment will respect limited file access imposed by Mac OS® X.
If the user who is logged in to Mac OS® X does not have Read and
Write access to the system hard drive, the printer may not be
visible in the Chooser. This difficulty can be resolved by either
granting Read and Write access to the system hard drive or booting
directly into Mac OS® 9.
Grant the User Read and Write Access to the System Hard Drive
- When logged in to Mac OS® X, close any open windows and quit
any programs to return to the desktop.
- Select the system hard drive either on the desktop or within
a Finder window.
- Click the File menu and choose Get Info.
- In the window that appears, locate the Ownership &
Permissions settings.
- By using the Group or Others fields, provide the current
user Read and Write access to this volume.
- Close the window to accept the changes. The printer should
now be visible in the Chooser when the Classic environment is
enabled.
Boot into Mac OS® 9
- When logged in to Mac OS® X, close any open windows and quit
any programs to return to the desktop.
- Click the Apple menu and choose System Preferences.
- Select the Startup Disk panel in the System Preferences
window that appears.
- Select the Mac OS® 9 volume in this window and click the
Restart button.
- Once booted into Mac OS® 9, click the Apple menu and select
Chooser.
- Set up the printer as desired and quit the Chooser.
- Click the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, and choose
Startup Disk.
- Select the Mac OS® X volume and click the Restart button.

Stamps Skip or Move Slowly (Windows®) |
| |
While
using Kid Pix® Deluxe 3 on a Windows® system, the stamp tool,
alphabet tool or Stampinator cursor skips around or is slow to

In some instances, updating the display card driver is necessary.
Consult the remainder of this technical note for additional
information. The procedures described below
will help to identify the source of the issue.
