Microphone Troubleshooting |
|
When using the record
and playback feature in Learn to Speak™ English 8.1, sound does not
record or playback, or the microphone provides poor quality or
non-existent input. Recording sound requires specific hardware and
correct system settings. Typically, recording issues occur when the
hardware is not working or connected properly or one or more system
settings are incorrect. Troubleshooting various system possibilities
will help you determine if the microphone is defective or if other
system issues exist. This technical note describes the
troubleshooting procedure. |
Complete the following
steps to determine whether a microphone is functioning properly.
- If the microphone requires batteries, verify
that the batteries are new and properly installed.
- Verify that the microphone is connected
correctly. Some computers have two microphone jacks, one for the
modem/phone card and one for the actual sound card. Be sure the
microphone is plugged into the sound card, which usually has 3 or
4 mini-plugs and no phone jack. However, if a USB microphone is in
use, it must be plugged into a USB port. (Consult the computer and
microphone documentation for more information.)
- Verify that the make and model of the sound
card is compatible with the microphone.
- If a battery box exists, check the high/low
switch setting. A setting in the High position provides voltage
equal to the amount usually provided by the microphone jack
itself. A Low setting reduces or weakens the input signal.
NOTE: Sound cards that prefer dynamic microphones (like the
Shure® microphones) may work better with the current microphone
with a battery box switch set to Low.
- Verify that the microphone is selected for
recording in the Windows® (or other) recording mixer.
- Try to record in the Windows® Sound Recorder
using 11kHz, 16-bit, mono format and playback the sound. It should
be clear.
- Try to record using another microphone. If this
works, then the previous microphone is either bad or incompatible
with the sound card. If another microphone does not work, then it
is likely the sound card is not working properly. Consult the
computer or soundcard documentation for additional information.
