CD-Read Issue |
| |
After
inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive when prompted, the CD is not
recognized. Any number of the following conditions may cause this
issue: incorrect CD is used, CD needs cleaned, incompatible CD-ROM
drive settings, incorrect CD-ROM driver, or outdated CD-ROM firmware
or driver. Consult the remainder of this technical note for
additional information. Completing the
procedures that follow will help to identify the source of the
CD-Read issue. Begin with item one and proceed through the list
attempting to use the CD after each step.
- Verify that the correct CD is inserted in
the CD-ROM drive.
- Clean the CD. Place a small amount of
nonabrasive, liquid soap on the shiny side of the CD. Using your
fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the CD in a
circular motion. Rinse the CD thoroughly and dry it using a
clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels
or tissue paper.
For Windows® 98/Me, continue with Step 3 if the issue remains
after completing Steps 1 and 2.
- Change the Read Ahead setting in the
following manner:
- Return to the desktop and right-click on
the My Computer icon.
- Select Properties from the menu that
appears and click the Performance tab in the Systems
Properties window.
- Click the File System button and then
click the CD-ROM tab.
- Locate Optimize Access Pattern For.
- Click the arrow to the right of the
information field and select the No Read Ahead option.
- Restart Windows®.
- Verify that the computer is utilizing a
32-bit file system. In the System Properties window (found in
Step 3 above), click the Performance tab. Verify that the File
System reads 32-bit. (If it reads anything else, contact the
computer manufacturer for installation of the proper CD-ROM or
hard drive drivers.)
- Turn off DMA in the following manner:
- In the System Properties window (found
in Step 3 above), click the Device Manager tab.
- Choose View Devices By Type. In the list
that appears, locate CD-ROM or CD-ROM Controller.
- Click the plus (+) sign next to this
listing.
- Using the left mouse button,
double-click on the name that appears.
- In the Properties window, click the
Settings tab. Find the DMA checkbox and remove the checkmark
(if one exists).
- Click OK.
- Verify that the most current version of the driver and/or
firmware for the CD-ROM drive is in use. Contact the computer
manufacturer for additional information.
- Try to use a different CD in the CD-ROM drive to see if it
can be read.
- If possible, insert the problem CD into the CD-ROM drive of
another computer to see if the issue remains.

File Not
Found: LOGO.SMK |

| When
attempting to run Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15, the following
message appears: "Error: File Not found. Unable to locate the
following file: 'Logo.smk'. Place the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing
CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive from which the application was
installed. If you have already done so and are still seeing this
message then click on Cancel and reinstall Mavis Beacon Teaches
Typing." This issue occurs when the logo.smk file for Mavis Beacon
Teaches Typing® 15 is not detected on the hard drive. Reinstalling
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 will resolve the issue.
Follow the procedure below to close all background
programs and install Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15. |

Installing Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15
|

To
prevent possible conflicts during an installation, closing all
programs (including background programs) before installing any
software is recommended. The directions presented in the remainder
of this technical note will guide you through a "clean" installation
of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15. Follow
the procedure below to close all background programs and install
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15.
Installing Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15: Windows® 98/Me
NOTE: The following procedure will temporarily disable background
programs and restart the computer in the cleanest possible
configuration. Installing software using this configuration will
minimize conflicts.
1. Close all programs and return to the Windows® desktop.
2. Click Start and select Run.
3. Type MSCONFIG in the Open: field.
4. Click OK. A System Configuration window will open.
5. Click the General tab.
6. Record the Startup selection that is shown so that it can be
referred to after the installation.
7. Click Selective Startup.
NOTE: If the Load Startup Group Item is grayed-out, the Startup
Group has been customized at some point. Click the Startup tab at
the top and record the startup items that are checked so this
customized configuration can be restored after the installation.
8. Remove the checkmark next to the items that follow. (This will
temporarily prevent all startup applications from loading when
Windows® is restarted.)
* Load startup group items
* Process Autoexec.bat file (Windows® 98)
* Process Config.sys file (Windows® 98)
* Load Static VxDs (Windows® Me)
* Load environment variables (Windows® Me)
9. Click Apply.
10. Click OK.
11. Click Yes when prompted to restart the computer.
12. When the computer has restarted and the Windows® Desktop
returns, insert the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 CD into the
CD-ROM drive.
13. Click Install and follow the onscreen instructions to install
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15.
14. Once the installation is complete, follow the steps below to
restore the system to its original configuration.
Restoring the Original System Configuration: Windows® 98/Me
1. Close all programs and return to the Windows® desktop.
2. Click Start and select Run.
3. Type MSCONFIG in the Open: field.
4. Click OK. The System Configuration Utility window will open.
5. Refer to the list of items recorded previously, and check the box
next to each item on the list for the General tab or Startup tab or
both.
6. Click Apply.
7. Click OK.
8. Click Yes when prompted to restart the computer.
9. Launch Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15.
Installing Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15: Windows® XP
NOTE: The following procedure will temporarily disable background
programs and restart the computer in the cleanest possible
configuration. Installing software using this configuration will
minimize conflicts.
When installing or running Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 on
Windows® XP, the user must be logged in to Windows® with
Administrator rights.
1. Close all programs and return to the Windows® desktop.
2. Click Start and select Run.
3. Type MSCONFIG in the Open: field.
4. Click OK. A System Configuration window will open.
5. Click the Startup tab.
6. Record the Startup items that are checked so you can return to
this customized configuration after the installation.
7. Deselect all items under the Startup tab.
8. Click Apply.
9. Click OK.
10. Click Yes when prompted to restart the computer.
11. When the computer has restarted, log in to Windows® as a user
with Administrator privileges. If you do not have Administrator
privileges, contact the system administrator.
12. After logging in to Windows® with administrator privileges,
insert the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
13. Click Install and follow the onscreen instructions to install
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15.
14. Once the installation is complete, follow the steps below to
restore the system to its original configuration.
Restoring the Original System Configuration: Windows® XP
1. Close all programs and return to the Windows® desktop.
2. Click Start and select Run.
3. Type MSCONFIG in the Open: field.
4. Click OK. The System Configuration Utility window will open.

NOTE: When installing or running Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 on
Windows® 2000, the user must be logged in to Windows® with
Administrator rights.
1. Press and hold the CTRL and SHIFT keys and tap the ESC key once.
The Windows® Task Manager will open.
2. Select the Applications tab.
3. Click once on an application in the list to select it. (If no
applications are listed, skip to Step 6 and proceed.)
4. Click End Task.
5. Repeat Steps 3 and 4 until all applications are closed.
6. With all applications closed, click File and select Exit Task
Manager.
7. Place the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 CD into the CD-ROM
drive.
8. Click Install and follow the onscreen instructions to install
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15.
9. Once the installation is complete, restart Windows®.
10. When the computer has restarted, log in to Windows® as a user
with Administrator privileges. If you do not have Administrator
privileges, contact the system administrator.
11. Launch Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15. |

Could Not Create File for System Setting…
|
| |
When
attempting to launch Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15, the following
error message appears: "Could not create file for system setting
C:\windows\allusers\applicationData\Broderbund\mavisbeaconSE\MA\System.Msy.”
A corrupt file causes this issue. Deleting the MAVUSER folder will
resolve the issue. Consult the remainder of this issue for the
procedure. When running Mavis Beacon Teaches
Typing® 15 on a system running Windows® 2000 or Windows® XP, the
user must be logged into Windows® as a user with administrator
rights. Contact the system administrator for additional information
if needed.
NOTE: If the issue remains after logging in with
administrator rights, continue with the following procedure.
Delete the MAVUSER File
NOTE: The procedure below will delete ALL users and ALL saved
progress.
Complete these steps:
- Close all windows and programs to return to the desktop.
- Click Start and click My Computer.
- Double-click the C: drive.
- Double-click the Documents and Settings folder.
- Double-click the All Users folder.
- Double-click the Application Data folder.
NOTE: If the Application Data Folder is not present in
the All Users folder, complete these steps:
- Click Tools in the menu bar and choose Folder Options.
- Click the View tab.
- Under the Hidden Files and Folders listing, set the
option to Show Hidden Files and Folders.
- Uncheck the Hide Extensions For Known File Types option.
- Click Apply and click OK. The Application Data folder
will now be available. (This folder will be a lighter yellow
than the other folders.)
- Double-click the Broderbund folder.
- Double-click the Mavis Beacon SE folder.
- Right-click the MAVUSER folder and choose Delete.
- Click Yes or OK to send the folder to the Recycling Bin.
- Close all windows to return to the desktop.
- Right-click the Recycling Bin and choose Empty Recycle Bin.
- Click Yes to confirm the deletion (if prompted).
- Restart the computer and launch Mavis Beacon Teaches
Typing®.

The
User's Guide for Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 is included on the
CD and can be opened and printed from Adobe® Acrobat® Reader. The
remainder of this technical note describes how to proceed.
The in-program User's Guide for Mavis Beacon
Teaches Typing® 15 is in the .PDF format and requires Adobe®
Acrobat® Reader for viewing and printing (if desired).
Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 4 is included on the Mavis Beacon Teaches
Typing® 15 CD and can be installed during the program installation
process. Once Adobe® Acrobat® Reader is installed, follow the steps
below to access the User's Guide.
- Open Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 and click Manuals in
the Opening (or Splash) screen. Two options (One-Hand Manual or
User's Guide) will appear.
- Click User's Guide. The User's Guide will open in Adobe®
Acrobat® Reader.
NOTE: All or part of the 80-page User's Guide can be printed

Languages: Run Program in English or Spanish
|

| Mavis
Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 features English and Spanish operating
modes. The language choice can be selected at program start-up or
from the settings window. View the remainder of this technical note
for information describing how to use this feature.
When launching Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15, a
message may appear asking if you would like to run the program in
Spanish. Complete one of the following:
Click Yes to run the program in Spanish.
Click No to run the program in English.
NOTE: The option "Don't show me this screen again" is also
available.
To change the language after sign-in, follow the
procedure below.
Changing from English to Spanish
- In the Classroom, click Settings on the
menu bar at the bottom of the screen and select User from the
menu that appears. The Settings window will open to the User
tab.
- Locate and click the English button once.
Español should appear.
- Click OK. The text and audio should now be
in Spanish.
Changing from Spanish to English
- From the Clase screen, click Configuración
from the menu bar at the bottom of the screen and select Usuario
from the menu that appears. The Configuración will open to the
Usuario tab.
- Locate and click the Español button.
English should appear.
- Click OK. The text and audio should now be
in English.

installed to the hard drive during program installation. This

Mini Mavis Personal Coach Launches at Startup
|

After
installing Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15, the Mini Mavis Personal
Coach feature of the program launches each time the computer is
started. Removing the Mini Mavis Personal Coach shortcut from the
Windows® Startup group will prevent the feature from launching. The
information in this technical note describes the steps.
Follow the procedure below to remove the Mini
Mavis Personal Coach shortcut from the Windows® Startup.
NOTE: Completing the following procedure will only prevent
Mini Mavis Personal Coach from launching at startup. This procedure
will not remove Mini Mavis Personal Coach from the system.
- Close all programs and windows and return to the desktop.
- Right-click on the Mini Mavis icon (resembles a stylized
letter "M") in the system tray (lower-right portion of the
screen).
- Click Exit (left mouse button) from the menu that appears.
- Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop. The My
Computer window will open.
For Windows® XP, click Start and click My Computer. The My
Computer window will open.
- Double-click the icon that represents the C: drive to view
its contents.
- Follow the procedure below for the operating system in use
to navigate to the Start Menu folder.
Windows® 98/Me
- Double-click the Windows folder to view its contents.
NOTE: If the contents of the Windows folder are not
displayed, click Show Files to display the contents of the
Windows Folder.
- Double-click the Start Menu folder to view its contents.
- Continue with Step 7.
Windows® 2000/XP
- Double-click the Documents and Settings folder to view
its contents.
- Double-click the All Users folder to view its contents.
- Double-click the Start Menu folder to view its contents.
- Continue with Step 7.
- Double-click the Programs folder to view its contents.
- Double-click the Startup folder to view its contents.
- Right-click the Personal Coach shortcut.
- Click Cut (left mouse button) from the menu that appears.
- Close all open windows and return to the desktop.
- Right-click a blank area of the desktop and click Paste
(left mouse button) from the menu that appears. This will move
the Personal Coach shortcut from the Windows® Startup group to
the desktop. Mini Mavis Personal Coach will no longer launch at
Windows® startup.
NOTE: To launch Mini Mavis Personal Coach, double-click the
Personal Coach icon that was moved to the desktop. |

Installing Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15

The
following technical note describes how to install Mavis Beacon
Teaches Typing® 15 in Windows® XP.
Installing in Windows® XP
NOTE: Users must have Administrator Privileges to Windows® XP
when installing or running Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15.
- After logging in to Windows®, insert the
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 install CD into the CD-ROM
drive.
NOTE: If the installation does not begin, complete these
steps to continue:
- Click Start on the Windows® taskbar.
- Click the Control Panel icon. The
Control Panel window will open and the Pick a Category menu
will appear. (If the menu does not appear, then it is likely
that the Windows Classic View option is active. To change
views, click Switch to Category View.)
- Click the Add or Remove Programs icon.
(This icon appears as CD-ROM in front of an open box.) The
Add or Remove Programs window will open.
- Click the Add New Programs icon
located on the left side of the window.
- Click the CD (or Floppy) button. A
window will open entitled: "Install Program from the Floppy
Disk or CD-ROM." The following prompt will also appear:
"Insert the first installation disk or CD-ROM."
- Insert the disk into the appropriate
drive (if needed) and click Next. The Run Installation
Program window will open. Windows® XP will automatically
locate the correct installation file and disk drive. (The
Browse button is used to select a different drive and/or
file during the installation if desired.)
- Click Finish to begin the
installation.
NOTE: If the system is setup with
multiple user accounts, a window may appear entitled: "Install
Programs as Other User." Some programs require the user to have
Administrative Privileges in order to run the installation. If
assistance is needed to manipulate user-account settings, refer
to the Windows® XP Help section, the system administrator or
contact technical support for the particular computer.
Successful installation of the program may not be possible
without Administrator Privileges. Click OK to close this window.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to
install the program.

Uninstalling Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15
|

Sometimes it is necessary to remove a program from a system to
resolve conflicts or to delete corrupted files. This technical note
presents the steps required to remove Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing®
15 from the computer. Complete the steps
below to uninstall Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15.
Uninstalling Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15
- Close programs and return to the desktop.
- Click Start, select Settings and click Control Panel. The
Control Panel will open.
- Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. The Add/Remove
Programs Properties window will open.
- Locate Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 15 in the list of
programs and click on it once to select it.
- Click the Add/Remove button.
- Click No to All if asked whether to delete Shared Files.
- After the program is uninstalled, close all open windows and
return to the desktop. Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 is now
uninstalled.

Manually Uninstalling Mavis Beacon Teaches
Typing® 15 |

The
instructions included in this technical note describe how to
manually uninstall Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 from the hard
drive. This procedure can be used if the typical uninstall procedure
does not work due to errors that occurred during the installation or
any other incomplete installation. The procedure is described in the
remainder of this technical note. Follow
the directions below to remove Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 from
the hard drive.
If the attempts to uninstall Mavis Beacon
Teaches Typing® 15 through Add/Remove Programs were unsuccessful,
complete the following procedure.
- Close all programs and windows and return
to the desktop.
- Double-click the My Computer icon on the
desktop. For Windows® XP, click Start and click My Computer.
- Click View (Windows® 98) or Tools
(Windows® Me/2000/XP) from the menu bar and click Folder Options
(Windows® 98/Me/2000/XP).
- Select the View tab in the window that
appears and locate the Hidden Files (or Hidden Files and
Folders) setting.
- For Windows® 98, verify the Show all Files
option is selected. For Windows® Me/2000/XP, verify the Display
Hidden Files and Folders option is selected.
- Locate the Hide File Extensions for Known
File Types setting and ensure that it does not have a check
before it. If a check appears before this setting, click once on
the checkmark to remove it.
- Click Apply and click OK to apply the
changes and close the Folder Options window.
- Navigate to the drive and location where
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 is installed. Complete this
procedure to navigate to the default installation location:
- Double-click the C:\ drive. The
contents of the C: drive will appear.
- Double-click the Program Files folder.
The contents of the Program Files folder will appear.
- Double-click the Broderbund folder.
The contents of the Broderbund folder will appear.
- Right-click the Mavis Beacon Teaches
Typing 15 folder and, using the left mouse button, click Delete
from the menu that appears.
- Click Yes when prompted to move the files
to the Recycle Bin.
- Click Back on the tool bar to return to
the Program Files folder.
- Double-click the Common Files folder.
- Right-click the InstallShield folder and,
using the left mouse button, click Delete from the menu that
appears.
- Click Yes when prompted to move the files
to the Recycle Bin.
- Click the Back button to return to the
Program Files folder, or close the Common Files folder.
- Double-click the InstallShield
Installation Information folder to view its contents.
- For the Standard version of Mavis Beacon
Teaches Typing® 15, right-click the
{AIF2EF0E-1EE5-4F0B-8A31-EE875EBD3FO1} folder and, using the
left mouse button, click Delete from the menu that appears.
For the Deluxe version of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15,
right-click the {42C7A1F1-6986-41E6-B0C7-94657FE89301} folder
and, using the left mouse button, click Delete from the menu
that appears.
- Click Yes when prompted to move the files
to the Recycle Bin.
- Close all programs and windows and return
to the desktop. Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 is now
uninstalled.

Changing the Lesson Type (Standard or 10 Key)
|

Mavis
Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 includes options to learn standard and
10-key typing. You can easily switch between these two lesson types
in the Settings area of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15. The
remainder of this note describes how to change lesson types.
The standard keyboard lessons teach typing
letters, numbers and symbols using the alphabet area of the
keyboard. The 10-key lessons teach typing numbers and number symbols
using the 10-key area of the keyboard.
To change between standard lessons and 10-key lessons, complete the
following:
- Open Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing®.
- Click your name in the Class Sign In list and click Enter
Classroom.
- Click Settings, located near the bottom of the screen, and
click User. A Settings window will appear.
- In the Lesson Type area, click to place a dot by the desired
lesson type.

Installing and Using the Bonus Software (Mavis Beacon Teaches
Typing® Deluxe) |

| After
installing Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 Deluxe, you want to
install the bonus software that is included with the program. Follow
the directions presented in this note to install the bonus software.
Installing the Bonus Software
- Click Start and select Programs or All Programs (Windows®
XP).
- Click Broderbund, select Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing Deluxe
15, and click Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. The Mavis Beacon
Teaches Typing® window will appear.
- Click Bonus Software on the right side of the screen.
- Click All-Purpose Letters or All-Purpose Resumes. The
installation will begin.
- Follow the onscreen prompts to complete the installation.
NOTE: To install the remaining bonus software title, repeat
Steps 1-5 and select the title that was not previously selected in
Step 4.Opening the Bonus Software
After the bonus software is installed, it can be accessed at any
time by clicking on the desired title in the programs list. Here is
the procedure:
- Click Start and select Programs or All Programs (Windows®
XP).
- Click the name of the program in the programs list
(All-Purpose Letters or All-Purpose Resumes).

Changing the
Display Size |

While
using Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15, you want to view the program
using the entire screen. Launching the program in the Full-Screen
Mode will display Mavis Beacon using the full visible area of the
screen. Consult the remainder of this note for the procedure.
To activate the Full-Screen Mode, complete these
steps:
- Launch Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® and sign in.
- Open the classroom.
- Click Settings and choose User.
- Click the User tab near the top of the Settings window.
- Locate the Full-Screen Mode setting and click inside the
oval before the On setting to activate that option.
- Click OK. A message indicating that "the screen mode will
change on restart" will appear.
- Click OK to close the window.
- Close Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing and launch the program
again. The program will open using the full-screen mode.
NOTE: Repeat the procedure and click the Off option to
deactivate the full-screen mode if desired.

Removing Names from the Sign-In List |
| |
After
using Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15, you want to remove one or
more of the names that appear in the sign-in list. Consult the
remainder of this note for the procedure.
Complete the following steps.
NOTE: Deleting a name from the sign-in list also deletes all
data associated with that name. Once a name is deleted, the name can
be reused, but the information associated with the original instance
of the name cannot be recovered.
- Launch Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing®.
- Click the User Manager button.
- Click the desired sign-in name to remove.
- Click Remove Student. The following message will appear:
"Warning! Deleting a user cannot be undone. Do you wish to
continue?"
- Click Yes to delete the selected name.
- Repeat the procedure to delete all unwanted names from the
sign-in list.
- After deleting the desired names, click Close to return to
the Class Sign-In screen.
- Sign in to continue using Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing®.

Changing
the Keyboard Type |

Mavis
Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 includes options to learn to type using a
standard or a Microsoft® Natural® Keyboard. You can easily switch
between these two keyboard types in the Settings area of Mavis
Beacon Teaches Typing® 15. The remainder of this note describes how
to change keyboard types. The standard
keyboard option displays a standard keyboard at the bottom of the
screen while in the lesson area. The Microsoft® Natural® Keyboard
option displays a natural or curved keyboard at the bottom of the
screen while in the lesson area.
To change between standard keyboard and the Microsoft® Natural®
Keyboard, complete the following:
- Open Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing®.
- At the Class Sign In screen, click a name to sign in and
click Enter Classroom.
- Click Settings, located near the bottom of the screen, and
click Typing. A Settings window will appear.
- Under Preferences, click to place a dot by the desired
keyboard type.
- Click OK. The next lesson presented will display the
selected keyboard type.

Turn Off
Background Sounds |

While
using Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15, you want to turn off the
background sounds. The settings for the background sounds are found
in the Settings area within Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15. View
the remainder of this note for the instructions.
Complete the following steps:
- Close all windows and return to the desktop.
- Launch Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15.
- From the Sign In screen, click your name in the list and
click Enter Classroom. The classroom area will appear.
- Click Settings located at the bottom of the screen and click
Audio. The Settings window will appear.
- To turn off the background music, click to place a dot by
Off to the right of Music Background.
- To turn off the sound effects, click to place a dot by Off
to the right of Sound Effects.
- Click OK. The selected settings will take effect.

Changing the Number of Spaces after a Period
|

While
using Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15, you want to change the number
of spaces that are required after a period (or at the end of a
sentence). Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15 allows for the selection
of one or two spaces after a period. This option can be changed in
the Settings area of the program. The remainder of this note
describes how to change the setting. To
change the number of spaces required after a period (or at the end
of a sentence), complete the following:
- Launch Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15. The Sign-In screen
will appear with the list of users.
- Click on the user name in the list to select it and click
Enter Classroom. The classroom will appear.
- Click Settings located near the bottom of the screen and
click Typing from the menu that appears. A Settings window will
open.
- Under Preferences, click to place a dot by the desired
selection (1 or 2).
- Click OK to close the Settings window.
- Continue to use Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15.

Sound Is
Garbled or Skips |

While
using Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15, the sound is garbled or
skips. A sound acceleration setting can cause this issue. Lowering
the audio hardware acceleration can help to resolve the issue.
Consult the remainder of this note for instructions that describe
how to lower the audio hardware acceleration.
Complete the procedure for the system in use.
Windows® 98/Me/2000
- Close all windows and programs and return
to the desktop.
- Click Start, select Settings and click
Control Panel. The Control Panel window will appear.
- Double-click Multimedia or Sounds and
Multimedia.
- In the Multimedia Properties window, click
the Audio tab.
- Under the Playback heading, click Advanced
Properties.
- Click the Performance tab and record the
location of the Hardware Acceleration slide bar.
- Click the Hardware Acceleration slide bar
and drag the indicator needle one notch to the left.
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Close all windows and launch and use
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15.
NOTE: If lowering the audio hardware
acceleration did not resolve the issue, contact the computer or
hardware manufacturer to determine if an updated sound card driver
is available.
Windows® XP
- Close all windows and programs and return
to the desktop.
- Click Start and click Control Panel. The
Control Panel window will appear.
- Click Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices.
- Click Sounds and Audio Devices. A Sounds
and Audio Devices Properties window will appear.
- Click the Audio tab.
- Under the Playback heading, click

Incompatible Version of the RPC Stub |

| When
attempting to install the program, the message "Error 0x90070725
Incompatible version of the RPC stub" appears. An incorrect version
of the OLEAUT32.DLL file in the System folder causes this issue.
Downloading and installing the correct version of the OLEAUT32.DLL
file should resolve the issue. Consult this note for additional

Desktop Reappears When Launching the Program
|
| |
When
attempts are made to launch Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 15, the
program does not open and the desktop reappears. This video-related
issue can be resolved by lowering the video hardware acceleration or
updating the video driver. Consult the remainder of this note for
additional information. Complete the
procedures that follow as needed to resolve the issue.
Lower Hardware Acceleration (Windows®
2000/XP)
- Close programs and all windows and return
to the desktop.
- Right-click a blank area on the desktop
and left-click Properties from the menu that appears. The
Display Properties will open.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Click the Advanced button.
- Click the Troubleshoot tab. A window will
open with the display adapter type identified on the title bar.
- Locate the hardware acceleration
adjustment bar. (It will show the words None and Full at each
end.)
- Record the current setting.
- Position the mouse pointer on the
hardware acceleration slide bar and click the mouse button,
keeping the button pressed.
- By moving the mouse, move the hardware
acceleration slide bar to the left one position and release the
mouse button.
NOTE: Do not select the NONE setting, which is the
setting to the far left.
- For the new setting to take effect, click
Apply and then click OK.
- Click OK again to close the Display
Properties window.
- Launch and use the program.
NOTE: If the issue remains, repeat the
above procedure and move the hardware acceleration slide bar to the
left one additional position. (Do not select the NONE setting, which
is the setting to the far left.)
After closing the program, return to the Hardware Acceleration
adjustment area of the Troubleshoot Tab (see above) and reset the
hardware acceleration to the original setting.
If lowering the hardware acceleration improved program performance,
repeat the above procedure before launching and using the program.
Updating the Video Driver is recommended. Consult the computer
or video card manufacturer for additional information.
Lower Hardware Acceleration (Windows® 98/Me)
NOTE: Before lowering hardware acceleration using the
procedure that follows, contact the computer manufacturer for
additional information. Some computers may experience video issues
after changing this setting.
- Click Start, select Settings and choose
Control Panel.
- Double-click the System icon. The System
Properties will open.
- Click the Performance tab.
- Click the Graphics button. The Advanced
Graphics Settings window will appear.
- Locate the hardware acceleration
adjustment bar. (It will show the words None and Full at each
end.)
- Record the current setting.
- Position the mouse pointer on the
hardware acceleration slide bar and click the mouse button,
keeping the button pressed.
- By moving the mouse, move the hardware
acceleration slide bar to the left to the BASIC setting and
release the mouse button. The word Basic will appear in the
sentence immediately under the slide bar.
NOTE: Do not select the NONE setting, which is the
setting to the far left.
- For the new setting to take effect, click
OK and restart the computer when prompted.
- Launch and use the program.
NOTE: After closing the program, return to
the Advanced Graphics Settings window (see above) and reset the
hardware acceleration to the original setting.
If lowering the hardware acceleration improved program performance,
repeat the above procedure before launching and using the program.
Update the Video Driver (Windows® 2000/XP)
- Click Start, select Settings (Windows®
2000/Windows® XP Classic Start Menu) and click Control Panel.
The Control Panel window will appear.
- Double-click the System icon (Windows®
2000/Windows® XP in Classic View). The System Properties window
will open.
NOTE: For Windows® XP, if the System icon does not appear
in the Control Panel, click Classic View (on the left) and then
double-click the System icon. The System Properties will open.
- Click the Hardware tab.
- Click the Device Manager button. The
Device Manager window will open.
- Click the plus (+) sign next to Display
(video) to expand the list.
- Double-click on the device driver name
that appears in the list. The Properties window will open
listing the driver information.
- Click the Driver tab and record the
driver date.
NOTE: Do not click the Update Driver button. The Update
Driver wizard searches the system (not the Internet) for drivers
to the selected device.
- Click OK to close the window.
NOTE: Once the driver date is obtained,
contact the computer or hardware manufacturer to determine if the
driver is up to date and if a newer driver is available. Driver
information is typically available at the manufacturer's website.
Update the Video Driver (Windows® 98/Me)
NOTE: The driver information (make and model information) is
found in the Device Manager in the System Properties window.
- Close all programs and return to the
desktop.
- Right-click the My Computer icon and
select Properties from the menu that appears. The System
Properties window will open.
- Click the Device Manager tab.
- Select View devices by type, if it is not
already selected.
- In the list of devices, locate and
double-click Display Adapters. This will expand the Display
Adapters list.
- Double-click the driver name that appears
below Display Adapters. The Properties window will open.
- Click the Driver tab. (The date of the
driver currently installed should be displayed.)
- Record the information.
NOTE: Video driver updates can be obtained
from the appropriate manufacturer’s Web site, or by contacting the
computer manufacturer for update and download information. |
