Issue Accuracy Report Appears Incorrect
Description After creating an Accuracy Report, while using Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing!® for Kids, the report appears incorrect or letters are missing. An improper display setting can cause this condition. Adjusting the display settings to fulfill the minimum system requirements should resolve the issue.

Issue Fatal Error at Script Line 550
Description Receiving the error message "Fatal error at script line 550" (or 505, 404) during installation.
Solution Confirm that the SET TEMP or TEMP= line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT is set to either C:\TEMP or C:\WINDOWS\TEMP. To do so:
  1. Click the Start button. Select Run.
  2. Type SYSEDIT in the OPEN field. Click OK.
  3. Click the AUTOEXEC.BAT title bar. Or click WINDOW in the menu bar, and select C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT from the list.
  4. Confirm that the SET TEMP= line reads C:\TEMP or
    C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.
  5. If changes are necessary, contact the computer manufacturer.
Issue Disabling Child Lock
Description If Child Lock is enabled, the Stop sign may not be visible, Printing may not be enabled, and a password will be required to access program Preferences.
Solution If a child is already signed-in, click the door in the lower right corner of the screen.

On a Windows® computer press F2 on the keyboard, type Mavis for the password, and uncheck the CHILD LOCK box. ***Note: The password must be entered Mavis with a capital M, or it will not be accepted***

On a Macintosh® computer press APPLE+R, type Mavis, and uncheck the "Children Can't Quit" box.
Issue Blank or Black Screen With Purple Border
Description When initializing Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing!® for Kids, a blank or black screen appears. The screen may include a purple border. An improper display setting can cause this condition. Adjusting the display settings to meet the minimum system requirements of the program should resolve the issue.
Solution Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing!® for Kids requires that the Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95) setting be set to 256 Colors. Complete the following procedure to change the color settings to 256 colors.
  1. Close all programs and windows and return to the desktop.
  2. Click Start, choose Settings and then click on Control Panel. The Control Panel will open.
  3. Double-click the Display icon. The Display Properties will open.
  4. Click the Settings tab.
  5. Near the bottom-left portion of the window, under Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95), click the drop-down menu and choose 256 Colors.
  6. Click Apply and then OK.
  7. Choose Yes if asked, "Do you want to restart the computer?"
  8. Launch Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing!® for Kids, the issue should be resolved.


NOTE: If 256 Colors is not an available setting, contact the computer manufacturer for additional assistance and information.

Issue How To Get Past the Opening Screen
Description Completing this step-by-step procedure should allow sign-in as user, and ultimately, access to the typing lessons.
Solution Complete the following procedure to access the typing lessons.
  1. Press the F2 key and release (Windows®) or press the APPLE and R keys together (Macintosh®) to access the Preferences screen.
  2. Type a name in the NAME: field.
  3. Click the ADD CHILD button.
  4. Under CHILD PREFERENCES choose an icon to represent the user.
  5. Highlight the name of the user in the name list that appears.
  6. Click the OK button. The main screen will appear.
  7. From the main screen, locate the name of the new user at the left.
  8. Click the icon above the individual's name to activate that person as the current user.
  9. Click any room in the house to begin a typing activity.

NOTE: For future reference, and for a review, consult the following:

bulletActivate the user profile before entering the house.

bulletRemember: New users are entered using the Preferences screen.
Issue How To Access the Preferences Screen
Description Adjustments to printing, sound, child lock, shift key, font and sign-in and others can be made by using the Preferences Dialog box.
Solution Follow the steps below to access the Preferences screen.
  1. If a child has already signed-in, click the door in the lower right corner of the screen.
  2. Press the F2 key and release (Windows®) or press the APPLE and R keys together (Macintosh®) to access the Preferences screen.
Issue 256 Colors Required
Description Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing!® for Kids requires that the Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95) setting be set to 256 Colors. (This is a minimum requirement of the program.) Following a step-by-step procedure will allow changing of the setting, or verification that 256 Colors is chosen as one of the Display Settings.
Solution Complete the following procedure to change the color settings to 256 colors.
  1. Click Start, choose Settings and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon.
  3. In the Display Properties window, select the Settings tab.
  4. Near the bottom-left portion of the window, under Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95), click the drop-down menu and choose 256 Colors.
  5. Click Apply near the bottom-right portion of the window.
  6. Choose Yes if asked, "Do you want to restart the computer?"

NOTE: If 256 Colors is not an available setting, contact the computer manufacturer for additional assistance and information.

Issue Error: ISSET_SE Caused a General Protection Fault...
Description During installation, the error message "ISSET_SE caused a General Protection Fault in module [various]" may appear. This issue is most often due to an anti-virus program running in the background; in addition, using Point32 or MSWheel mouse programs may cause the error. The issue may also be due to a conflict between the mouse driver and the actual mouse device being used. Closing all background applications, or installing the correct mouse driver, should resolve the issue.
Solution Closing Background Applications

Note: Some virus-scan programs must be disabled before the above procedure will work. Consult your Anti-Virus' program documentation for instructions on how to temporarily disable it.

Confirm Mouse Driver Information
In the device manager, compare the listed mouse driver with the actual mouse attached to the computer.
  1. To open the Device Manager, click Start,thend click Settings and select Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the System icon in the Control Panel. This will open the System Properties dialog bozw.
  3. Click the Device Manager tab.
  4. If the listed mouse driver is incorrect, remove then re-install the mouse drivers. Contact the manufacturer of the computer or mouse for further assistance.
Issue CD Is Not Recognized
Description After inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive when prompted, the CD is not recognized. Any number of the following conditions may cause this issue: wrong CD is being used, CD needs cleaned, CD-ROM drive settings require changes, or the CD-ROM driver is corrupted, outdated, or the wrong one.
Solution By completing the procedures that follow, the CD-Read issue may be resolved. Begin with item one and proceed through the list.
  1. Verify that the correct CD is being used when prompted to insert the disc.
  2. Clean the CD. Place a small amount of nonabrasive, liquid soap on the shiny side of the disc. Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the disc in a circular motion. Rinse the disc thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or tissue paper.
  3. Change the Read Ahead setting in the following manner:
  1. Return to the desktop and right click on the My Computer icon.
  2. Select Properties from the menu that appears and click on the Performance tab in the Systems Properties window.
  3. Click the File System button and click the CD-ROM tab.
  4. Locate Optimize Access Pattern For:.
  5. Click the arrow to the right of the information field and select the No Read Ahead option.
  6. Restart Windows®.
  1. Verify that the computer is utilizing a 32-bit file system. In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3 above), click the Performance tab. Verify that the File System reads 32-bit. (If it reads anything else, contact the computer manufacturer for installation of the proper CD-ROM or hard drive drivers.)
  1. Verify that the most current version of the driver for the CD-ROM drive is being used. Contact the computer manufacturer for additional information.
  2. Try to use a different disc in the CD-ROM drive to see if it can be read.
  3. If possible, insert the CD that is not being recognized into the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if the issue remains.
Issue Incompatible Version of the RPC Stub
Description When attempting to install the program, the message "Error 0x90070725 Incompatible version of the RPC stub" appears. An incorrect version of the OLEAUT32.DLL file in the System folder causes this issue. Downloading and installing the correct version of the OLEAUT32.DLL file should resolve the issue. Consult this technical note for additional instructions.
