creating an Accuracy Report, while using Mavis Beacon Teaches
Typing!® for Kids, the report appears incorrect or letters are
missing. An improper display setting can cause this condition.
Adjusting the display settings to fulfill the minimum system
requirements should resolve the issue. |

Fatal Error at Script Line 550 |
| Receiving the error
message "Fatal error at script line 550" (or 505, 404) during
installation. |
Confirm that the SET
TEMP or TEMP= line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT is set to either C:\TEMP or
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP. To do so:
- Click the Start button. Select Run.
- Type SYSEDIT in the OPEN field. Click OK.
- Click the AUTOEXEC.BAT title bar. Or click
WINDOW in the menu bar, and select C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT from the list.
- Confirm that the SET TEMP= line reads C:\TEMP
or
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.
- If changes are necessary, contact the computer
manufacturer.

Disabling
Child Lock |
| If Child Lock is
enabled, the Stop sign may not be visible, Printing may not be
enabled, and a password will be required to access program
Preferences. |
If a child is already
signed-in, click the door in the lower right corner of the screen.
On a Windows® computer press F2 on the keyboard, type Mavis
for the password, and uncheck the CHILD LOCK box. ***Note: The
password must be entered Mavis with a capital M, or it will
not be accepted***
On a Macintosh® computer press APPLE+R, type Mavis, and
uncheck the "Children Can't Quit" box. |

Blank or Black Screen
With Purple Border |
| When initializing
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing!® for Kids, a blank or black screen
appears. The screen may include a purple border. An improper display
setting can cause this condition. Adjusting the display settings to
meet the minimum system requirements of the program should resolve
the issue. |
Mavis Beacon Teaches
Typing!® for Kids requires that the Colors (Windows® 98) or Color
Palette (Windows® 95) setting be set to 256 Colors. Complete the
following procedure to change the color settings to 256 colors.
- Close all programs and windows and return to
the desktop.
- Click Start, choose Settings and then click on
Control Panel. The Control Panel will open.
- Double-click the Display icon. The Display
Properties will open.
- Click the Settings tab.
- Near the bottom-left portion of the window,
under Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95), click
the drop-down menu and choose 256 Colors.
- Click Apply and then OK.
- Choose Yes if asked, "Do you want to restart
the computer?"
- Launch Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing!® for Kids,
the issue should be resolved.
NOTE: If 256 Colors is not an available setting, contact the
computer manufacturer for additional assistance and information.

How To Access the
Preferences Screen |

Adjustments to
printing, sound, child lock, shift key, font and sign-in and others
can be made by using the Preferences Dialog box. |
Follow the steps below to
access the Preferences screen.
- If a child has already signed-in, click the
door in the lower right corner of the screen.
- Press the F2 key and release (Windows®) or
press the APPLE and R keys together (Macintosh®) to access the
Preferences screen.

Colors Required |
|
Mavis Beacon Teaches
Typing!® for Kids requires that the Colors (Windows® 98) or Color
Palette (Windows® 95) setting be set to 256 Colors. (This is a
minimum requirement of the program.) Following a step-by-step
procedure will allow changing of the setting, or verification that
256 Colors is chosen as one of the Display Settings. |
Complete the following
procedure to change the color settings to 256 colors.

Error: ISSET_SE Caused a General Protection Fault... |
|
During installation,
the error message "ISSET_SE caused a General Protection Fault in
module [various]" may appear. This issue is most often due to an
anti-virus program running in the background; in addition, using
Point32 or MSWheel mouse programs may cause the error. The issue may
also be due to a conflict between the mouse driver and the actual
mouse device being used. Closing all background applications, or
installing the correct mouse driver, should resolve the issue. |

Note: Some virus-scan programs must be disabled before the
above procedure will work. Consult your Anti-Virus' program
documentation for instructions on how to temporarily disable it.
Confirm Mouse Driver Information
In the device manager, compare the listed mouse driver with the
actual mouse attached to the computer.
- To open the Device Manager, click Start,thend
click Settings and select Control Panel.
- Double-click the System icon in the Control
Panel. This will open the System Properties dialog bozw.
- Click the Device Manager tab.
- If the listed mouse driver is incorrect, remove
then re-install the mouse drivers. Contact the manufacturer of the
computer or mouse for further assistance.

CD Is Not Recognized |
|
After inserting the CD
into the CD-ROM drive when prompted, the CD is not recognized. Any
number of the following conditions may cause this issue: wrong CD is
being used, CD needs cleaned, CD-ROM drive settings require changes,
or the CD-ROM driver is corrupted, outdated, or the wrong one. |
By completing the
procedures that follow, the CD-Read issue may be resolved. Begin
with item one and proceed through the list.
- Verify that the correct CD is being used when
prompted to insert the disc.
- Clean the CD. Place a small amount of
nonabrasive, liquid soap on the shiny side of the disc. Using your
fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the disc in a
circular motion. Rinse the disc thoroughly and dry it using a
clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or
tissue paper.
- Change the Read Ahead setting in the following
manner:
- Return to the desktop and right click on the
My Computer icon.
- Select Properties from the menu that appears
and click on the Performance tab in the Systems Properties
window.
- Click the File System button and click the
CD-ROM tab.
- Locate Optimize Access Pattern For:.
- Click the arrow to the right of the
information field and select the No Read Ahead option.
- Restart Windows®.
- Verify that the computer is utilizing a 32-bit
file system. In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3
above), click the Performance tab. Verify that the File System
reads 32-bit. (If it reads anything else, contact the computer
manufacturer for installation of the proper CD-ROM or hard drive
drivers.)
- Verify that the most current version of the
driver for the CD-ROM drive is being used. Contact the computer
manufacturer for additional information.
- Try to use a different disc in the CD-ROM drive
to see if it can be read.
- If possible, insert the CD that is not being
recognized into the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if the
issue remains.

Incompatible Version
of the RPC Stub |
|
When attempting to
install the program, the message "Error 0x90070725 Incompatible
version of the RPC stub" appears. An incorrect version of the
OLEAUT32.DLL file in the System folder causes this issue.
Downloading and installing the correct version of the OLEAUT32.DLL
file should resolve the issue. Consult this technical note for
additional instructions. |
