Description
Solution Method 1: Disable any Antivirus or Firewall software

Make sure you have disabled any Antivirus or Firewall software you may have. Some examples of these programs are Norton Antivirus, Trend Micro, Mcaffee and Zone Alarm. These types of programs have a tendency to create conflicts with files/programs necessary for the game to run. Please see the manufacturers website for instructions on how to temporarily disable your software.

Method 2: Update Your Video Driver

Contact the manufacturer of your video card to inquire about how to obtain and install the latest version of the video driver for your video card or visit the Windows Update site to look for applicable drivers

To identify the name and manufacturer of your video adapter:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type dxdiag, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Display tab.
  4. Under Device, look for Name and Manufacturer.
  5. Click Exit.
Method 3: Update Your Sound Driver

Contact the manufacturer of your sound card to inquire about how to obtain and install the latest version of the sound driver for your sound card or visit the Windows Update site to look for applicable drivers. (See the "Method 4" section of this article for contact information.)

  5. Click Exit.
Method 4: Install the Latest Motherboard Chipset Drivers

If you are using an Intel chipset motherboard, you may be able to resolve this issue by installing the most recent drivers for the chipset. Check www.intel.com for the latest drivers available. If you are using a VIA Technologies chipset motherboard, you may be able to resolve this issue by installing the most recent drivers for the chipset. Check www.viaarena.com for the latest drivers available.

For all other motherboard drivers, please contact the motherboard manufacturer for the most recent drivers available.

Method 5: Restart Your Computer by Using a Clean Boot Procedure

When you start Microsoft Windows, typically there are a number of programs that start automatically and run in the background that may interfere with the game. These programs may include antivirus and system utility programs. When you perform a clean boot, you prevent these programs from starting automatically. You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

To restart your computer by using a clean boot procedure, follow these steps when you are using Windows XP.

Note You may experience a temporary loss of some services functionality when you follow these steps. Restoring the settings restores the functionality, but may result in the return of the original error message or behavior.

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
  4. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the following check boxes:
    1. Process SYSTEM.INI File
    2. Process WIN.INI File
    3. Load Startup Items
  5. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
  6. Click OK, and then click Restart.
* By replacing the checks in the boxes and restarting the computer after testing the game, you can return your computer to the same status as before you cleared the check boxes.

Issue Laptops not supported
Description
Solution Our products have not been tested to be used on laptop computers. Laptops are all-in-one devices that combine a monitor, CPU, keyboard, video and audio cards. Because of this, some resources are ‘shared’ or ‘integrated’. Also the CPU or processors have a different architecture than that of desktop PC's. Therefore the device performance is different and game stability cannot be guaranteed.

While we do not support or test our products on laptops, that does not neccessarily mean that they will not run. We would recommend that you update all device drivers associated with your laptop and try the game. If this still does not work, then I would like to re-iterate that unfortunately there is no further help or support we can provide you.

Issue Program Freezes or CD-Read Error Occurs
Description
Solution Madeline™ Classroom Companion 1st Grade freezes, presents a cd-read error, or experiences extremely long cd read times during start up. These conditions are typically related to the CD-ROM drive. Cleaning the cd and checking other cd-related system settings could resolve the issues. Updating the current cd-rom drive for the system could also be necessary. By completing the procedures that follow, the cd-read issue may be resolved. Begin with item one and proceed through the list.

NOTE: There have been reported issues running the program when the following cd-rom drives are being used: Goldstar, Matshita, Lite-On, and Mistumi !b.
  1. Verify that the correct cd is being used when prompted to insert the disc.

  2. Clean the cd. Place a small amount of nonabrasive, liquid soap on the shiny side of the disc. Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the disc in a circular motion. Rinse the disc thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or tissue paper.

  3. Change the Read Ahead setting in the following manner:
  1. Return to the desktop and right click on the My Computer icon.

  2. Select Properties from the menu that appears and click the Performance tab in the Systems Properties window.

  3. Click the File System button and click the CD-ROM tab.

  4. Locate Optimize Access Pattern For:.

  5. Click the arrow to the right of the information field and select the No Read Ahead option.

  6. Restart Windows®.
  1. Verify that the computer is utilizing a 32-bit file system. In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3 above), click the Performance tab. Verify that the File System reads 32-bit. (If it reads anything else, contact the computer manufacturer for installation of the proper CD-ROM or hard drive drivers.)

  2. Activate Sync Data Transfer in the following manner:
  1. In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3 above), click the Device Manager tab.

  2. Choose View Devices By Type. In the list that appears, locate CD-ROM or CD-ROM Controller.

  3. Click the plus (+) sign next to this listing.

  4. Using the left mouse button, double-click the name that appears.

  5. In the Properties window, click the Settings tab. Find the Sync Data Transfer checkbox and add a checkmark to it (if one does not exist).

  6. Click OK.
  1. Verify that the most current version of the driver for the CD-ROM drive is being used. Contact the computer manufacturer for additional information.

  2. Try to use a different disc in the CD-ROM drive to see if it can be read.

  3. If possible, insert the problem disc into the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if the issue remains.
Close Background Programs (Windows® 95/98)
  1. Exit all programs and return to the desktop.

  2. When at the desktop, press and hold down the CTRL and ALT keys at the same time.

  3. While these keys are being pressed, tap the DELETE key once.

  4. Release the CTRL and ALT keys. A Close Program window will open. (In it appears a listing of all of the programs currently running on the system. For any installation using Windows® 95 or Windows® 98, two programs must remain active: EXPLORER and SYSTRAY.)

NOTE: Before closing any background program, consult the computer manufacturer to identify which programs need to remain running.

  5. Start at the top of the Close Program listing and highlight a program by clicking on it once.

  6. Click the End Task button in the lower left corner of the Close Program window. (Do not click the Shut Down button as it will shut down the computer. This will start all programs that have been closed, requiring that the procedure be repeated from the beginning.) As a safety feature, only one program can be closed at time. The Close Program window will close each time the End Task button is selected. To continue, repeat Steps 2 and 3 to reopen the Close Program window.

NOTE: Most programs will close with a single End Task action. Some programs, however, will require that the End Task button be selected again. If a message appears indicating that the program is not responding, click End Task again and proceed.

  7. When only EXPLORER and SYSTRAY are showing in the Close Program window, click the Cancel button.

  8. Attempt to run the program. (These background programs will start when the computer is restarted. To close them again, the process will have to be repeated.)
