Issue Copying a CD Using the Same Disc Drive
Description
Solution Many computers are equipped with only a single disc drive (i.e., CD, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD or DVD-RW). If you have an NTI-supported CD recorder (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD or DVD-RW) and are unsure of how to burn a copy of a CD using the same disc drive, the information provided in this technical note describes the process. Follow the procedures below to make (burn) a copy of a CD using the same drive.

NOTE: An NTI-supported CD recorder (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD or DVD-RW) is required to burn a copy of a CD.

Recording the CD as an .NCD File

NOTE: The following procedure will copy the entire contents of the CD to the hard drive. Before beginning, verify that adequate free hard drive space is available to temporarily hold the contents of the CD that will be copied.

  1. Launch NTI CD-Maker™ 2000 Essentials and click Copy CD from the Home screen.

  2. Place the CD to be copied into the CD Recorder.

  3. Click the down arrow button to the right of the Source field and select the drive containing the CD that is to be copied.

  4. Click the down arrow button to the right of the Target field and select NTI CD Image Writer from the menu that appears.

  5. After selecting the appropriate Source and Target, click the Step 2 button located on the left under CD Copy. A Save As dialog box will appear.

  6. Enter a name for the file in the File Name: field.

  7. Make a note of the Save In location and the file name.

  8. Click Save. The recording processes will begin and will copy the contents of the CD to the hard drive. When the recording process is complete, a dialog box will appear stating: "The CD was recorded successfully!"

  9. Click OK. The contents of the CD have been copied to an .NCD file and saved in the location noted in Step 7.

  10. Follow the procedure below to burn a CD using the .NCD file that was created.
Burn a CD from an .NCD File

  1. Click File from the menu bar, select New and click CD Copy.

  2. Place a blank CD-R or CD-RW disc into the recordable disc drive.

  3. Click the down arrow button to the right of the Source field and select NTI CD Image Reader from the menu that appears.

  4. Click the down arrow button to the right of the Target field and select the recordable disc drive (i.e., Memorex CRW-1622, Pioneer DVR-103, etc.) from the menu that appears.

NOTE: If a recordable disc drive does not appear in the Target menu, the drive may not be supported by the program. Check the program's Read Me (Start-Programs-NTI CD-Maker 2000 Essentials-Read Me) to verify that the drive is supported.

  5. After selecting the appropriate Source and Target, click the Step 2 button located on the left under CD Copy. An Open dialog box will appear.

  6. Locate and click once on the .NCD file that was created in the first procedure above. (This will be in the location noted from Step 7 in the first procedure shown above.)

  7. Click Open. The Write CD Options dialog box will appear.

  8. Select the desired options and click Start. Depending on the options selected, the files will be copied from the .NCD file and recorded to the CD.
NOTE: The time needed to complete the copy process will vary depending on the system and the amount of data to be copied. Typically, several minutes can pass before the process is complete.

To free up the hard disk space used to copy the original CD, the .NCD file can be deleted when it has been successfully burned to the new CD.

Issue New Drive Support Database
Description
Solution If your CD or DVD recorder is not listed in the NTI-Supported Recorders list in the program's ReadMe.txt file, the drive support database for NTI CD-Maker™ 2000 Essentials is updated on a regular basis. The updated database may include your CD or DVD recorder. View the remainder of this note for the list of the most recently added drives and instructions to download the current drive support database. To view the list of most recently added drives, follow the instructions below.

New Drives List

The New Drives List contains only the drives that have been added to the NTI-supported Recorders database since version 5.1.1. This list does not include drives that are supported in versions 5.1.1 of NTI CD-Maker™ and earlier. Viewing the NTI-Supported Recorders list in the NTI CD-Maker™ 2000 Essential Read Me (ReadMe.txt) for your CD or DVD recorder before viewing this latest list is recommended. Click Start, select Programs (or All Programs), choose NTI CD-Maker 2000 Essentials and click Read Me to open the program's Read Me file (ReadMe.txt).

NOTE: If you have already checked the list of NTI-Supported Recorders in the program's Read Me and did not find your CD or DVD recorder listed, click New Drives List to view the list.

If your drive is listed in the New Drives list, follow the next procedure to download and install the new drive database to update NTI CD-Maker™ 2000 Essentials. This will allow NTI CD-Maker™ 2000 Essentials to recognize the CD or DVD recorder.

If your CD or DVD recorder is not listed in either the NTI-Supported Recorders or New Drives lists, recheck the New Drives list after a few weeks have passed. New CD and DVD recorders are added regularly.Download and Install the New Drive Support Database

Issue Video CD and Super VCD Requirements
Description
Solution When attempting to burn a Video CD (VCD) or Super VCD (SVCD) using NTI CD-Maker™ 2000 Essentials, a message similar to one of the following appears: "Invalid Source," "Invalid MPEG file format," or "Super Video CD requires MPEG-2 file." Other similar messages may appear. A file that is saved in an incorrect format will typically cause this error. To create a Video CD or Super VCD, you must use a movie file that is saved in the proper MPEG format. The information provided in this technical note describes the file requirements for creating a Video CD and Super VCD. The following are the MPEG formats required to create a Video CD (VCD) or Super VCD (SVCD). View the chart below for the file requirements for each.

Type Video Format Picture Size Picture Rate Audio Format Bit Rate Audio Channels Surround Sound
Video CD MPEG-1 (NTSC) 352 x 240 29.97 Hz Video CD 2.0 Fixed - up to 224 kbps 1 Stereo or 2 Mono Stereo with Dolby pro-logic
Super VCD MPEG-2 (NTSC) 480 x 480 29.97 Hz SuperVideo CD Variable – 32 to 384 kbps 2 Stereo or 4 Mono MPEG-2 (5+1) extension

NOTE: The above requirements are based on the NTSC video format. NTI CD-Maker™ 2000 Essentials also supports the PAL video format.

Using a file that does not meet the VCD or SVCD specification may produce an unusable or faulty VCD or SVCD disc. If the video file does not meet the proper format specifications needed to create a VCD or SVCD, using a program such as MovieShop™ Deluxe may allow you to convert the video file to the format needed.
