Issue 256 Colors Required
Description Reader Rabbit® Playtime For Baby & Toddler v 1.0 requires that the Colors (Windows® 98/Me) or Color Palette (Windows® 95) setting be set to 256 Colors. (This is a minimum requirement of the program.) Following a step-by-step procedure will allow you to change the setting or to verify that 256 Colors is chosen as one of the Display Settings.
Solution Complete the following procedure to change the color settings to 256 colors.
  1. Click Start, choose Settings and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon.
  3. In the Display Properties window, select the Settings tab.
  4. Near the bottom-left portion of the window, under Colors (Windows® 98/Me) or Color Palette (Windows® 95), click the drop-down menu and choose 256 Colors.
  5. Click Apply near the bottom-right portion of the window.
  6. Choose Yes if asked, "Do you want to restart the computer?"

NOTE: If 256 Colors is not an available setting, contact the computer manufacturer for additional assistance and information.

Macintosh®

  1. Close all program windows and return to the desktop.
  2. Click the Apple in the menu bar, select Control Panels and choose Monitors & Sound. The Monitors & Sound window will open.
  3. Click the Monitor button.
  4. Under Color Depth, select 256. The screen may flash for a couple seconds.
  5. Click File and choose Quit. This will close the Monitors & Sound window.

NOTE: If 256 Colors is not an available setting, contact the computer manufacturer for additional assistance and information.

Issue Auto-Installation Does Not Begin
Description After inserting the Reader Rabbit® Playtime For Baby & Toddler v 1.0 CD into the CD-ROM drive, the Auto-Run feature of the computer does not start the installation. Installing the program manually should resolve the issue.
Solution Follow the steps below to complete a manual installation of the program.
  1. Verify that the proper CD is inserted into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start and select Run. The Run dialog box will open.
  3. Type X:\SETUP.EXE in the Open: field. (Replace the X with the correct drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.)
  4. Click OK. The installation of the program should begin.
  5. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

NOTE: If the installation does not begin after completing the above procedure, or an error such as "Cannot find the file d:\setup.exe (or one of its components). Make sure that the path and filename are correct and that all libraries are available" occurs, complete the following steps:

  1. Verify that the correct drive letter for the CD-ROM drive was entered in Step 3 above.
  2. If the correct letter was entered and the installation does not begin, complete the procedures for CD Is Not Recognized.
Issue CD Is Not Recognized
Description After inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive when prompted, the CD is not recognized. Any number of the following conditions may cause this issue: the wrong CD is used, the CD needs cleaned, the CD-ROM drive settings are not compatible with the CD, an incorrect CD-ROM driver is installed or the CD-ROM firmware or driver is outdated.
Solution By completing the procedures that follow, the CD-Read issue may be resolved. First, verify that the correct CD is in the CD-ROM drive and that the label on the CD is facing up. Once you have verified that the correct CD is in the CD-ROM drive, complete the steps under Clean the CD.

Clean the CD
  1. Place a small amount of nonabrasive, liquid soap on the shiny side of the CD.
  2. Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the CD in a circular motion.
  3. Rinse the CD thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or tissue paper.
  4. Try the program again.

If the issue continues, complete the steps below for Change the Read-Ahead Settings.

Change the Read-Ahead Settings

  1. Close all program windows and return to the desktop.
  2. Right-click the My Computer icon and, using the left mouse button, click Properties from the menu that appears.
  3. Click the Performance tab in the Systems Properties window.
  4. Verify that the File System reads 32-bit. (If it reads anything else, contact the computer manufacturer for the proper CD-ROM or hard drive drivers.)
  5. Click the File System button and click the CD-ROM tab.
  6. Locate Optimize Access Pattern For.
  7. Click the arrow to the right of the information field and select the No Read Ahead option.
  8. Click Apply and click OK to close the File System Properties window.
  9. Click Close to close the System Properties window.
  10. Click Yes when prompted to Restart Windows®.
  11. When Windows® restarts, try the program again.

If the issue continues complete the steps below for Turn off DMA.

Turn off DMA

  1. Follow Steps 1 and 2 above to open the System Properties.
  2. In the System Properties window (Step 2 above), click the Device Manager tab.
  3. Choose View Devices By Type.
  4. In the list that appears, locate CD-ROM or CD-ROM Controller.
  5. Click once on the plus (+) sign next to this listing.
  6. Double-click on the name that appears.
  7. In the CD-ROM Properties window, click the Settings tab.
  8. Locate the DMA checkbox and remove the checkmark (if one exists).
  9. Click OK to close the CD-ROM Properties window.
  10. Click Close to close the System Properties window.
  11. Click Yes when prompted to Restart Windows®.
  12. When Windows® restarts, try the program again.

If the CD is still not recognized, try the following:

bulletTry to use a different CD in the CD-ROM drive to see if it can be read.
bulletIf possible, insert the problem CD into the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if the issue remains.
bulletVerify that the most current version of the driver and firmware for the CD-ROM drive is used. Contact the computer manufacturer for additional information.
Issue Not Enough Disk Space
Description When attempting to install Reader Rabbit® Playtime for Baby & Toddler v 1.0, the message "Not enough disk space" appears. This typically occurs on Windows® 2000 when attempting to install the program to a hard drive that has over 2 GBs of free space. The remainder of this technical note describes how to install the program.
Solution Follow the procedure below to install the program.
  1. Verify the system meets the minimum system requirements for the program. If the requirements are met (or exceeded), continue with the procedure.

    NOTE: If the system does not meet the minimum system requirements, the program may not install or run properly.
  2. Place the Reader Rabbit® Playtime for Baby & Toddler v 1.0 Windows® CD into the CD-ROM drive. Allow time for the CD-ROM drive to start up. If auto-install begins, skip to Step 5. (If auto-run does not begin, continue with the next step.)
  3. Click Start and select Run. The Run dialog box will appear.
  4. Type D:\Setup.exe in the Open: field and click OK. (If the CD-ROM drive containing the CD is represented by a different letter, replace D with that letter.)
  5. Click Yes to install the program.
  6. When the Welcome dialog box appears, click Next. The Software License Agreement will appear.
  7. Click Yes, if you agree to the terms of the agreement.
  8. At the Choose Destination Location, press and hold down the CTRL key and click Next. The Select Program Folder dialog box will appear.
  9. Release the CTRL key and follow the on-screen prompts to continue installing the program.

NOTE: This version of Reader Rabbit® Playtime for Baby & Toddler was designed to run under Windows® 95/98. This version has not been tested to run under Windows® 2000.

Issue Incompatible Version of the RPC Stub
Description When attempting to install the program, the message "Error 0x90070725 Incompatible version of the RPC stub" appears. An incorrect version of the OLEAUT32.DLL file in the System folder causes this issue. Downloading and installing the correct version of the OLEAUT32.DLL file should resolve the issue. Consult this technical note for additional instructions.
