Issue 256 Colors Required
Description Reader Rabbit's® I Can Read With Phonics!  requires that the Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95) setting be set to 256 Colors. (This is a minimum requirement of the program.) Following a step-by-step procedure will allow you to change the setting or to verify that 256 Colors is chosen as one of the Display Settings.
Solution Complete the following procedure to change the color settings to 256 colors.
  1. Click Start, choose Settings and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon.
  3. In the Display Properties window, select the Settings tab.
  4. Near the bottom-left portion of the window, under Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95), click the drop-down menu and choose 256 Colors.
  5. Click Apply near the bottom-right portion of the window.
  6. Choose Yes if asked, "Do you want to restart the computer?"

NOTE: If 256 Colors is not an available setting, contact the computer manufacturer for additional assistance and information.

Issue Freezes or Locks Up During Installation
Description During the installation of Reader Rabbit® I Can Read With Phonics™ v1.01, the system locks up or the program freezes. Conflicts that occur with programs running in the background during installation can cause this issue. Closing background programs and reinstalling Reader Rabbit® I Can Read With Phonics™ v1.01 should resolve this.
Solution Follow the steps below to close background programs. If you are installing the program on Windows® 98 or Windows® Me, follow the steps below.
Windows® 98/Me
  1. Close programs and all windows and return to the desktop.
  2. Press and hold the CTRL and ALT keys and tap the DELETE key once.
  3. Release the CTRL and ALT keys. The Close Programs window should appear.
  4. Click Setup once to select it.
  5. Click End Task. This should close the Setup window.
  6. Click Start and select Run.
  7. Type MSCONFIG in the Open: field.
  8. Click OK. A System Configuration window will open.
  9. Click the General tab.

    NOTE: Record the current Startup selection so that you can refer to that option after the installation.
     
  10. Click Selective Startup.

    NOTE: If the Load Startup Group Item is grayed-out, the Startup Group has been customized at some point. Click the Startup tab at the top and record the startup items that are checked so you can return to this customized configuration after the installation.
     
  11. Remove the check mark next to the items that follow. (This will temporarily prevent all startup applications from loading when you reboot your computer.)

  1. Click Apply.
  2. Click OK.
  3. Click Yes when prompted to restart your computer.
  4. When the computer has restarted and you are back to the Windows® Desktop, insert the Reader Rabbit® I Can Read With Phonics™ v.1.01 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  5. Click Install and follow the onscreen instructions to install Reader Rabbit® I Can Read With Phonics™.
  6. Once the installation is complete, follow the steps below to restore your system to its original configuration.

Restoring the Original System Configuration: Windows® 98/Me

  1. Close all programs and return to the Windows® desktop.
  2. Click Start and select Run.
  3. Type MSCONFIG in the Open: field.
  4. Click OK. The System Configuration Utility window will open.
  5. Refer to the list of items recorded previously, and check the box next to each item on the list for the General tab or Startup tab or both.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Yes when prompted to restart your computer.

Windows® 95

  1. Press and hold the CTRL and ALT keys while you tap the DELETE key.
  2. Release the CTRL and ALT keys. The Close Programs Window should appear.
  3. Click Setup once to select it.
  4. Click End Task. This should close the Setup window.
  5. Click Start and select Shut Down.
  6. Select the Restart the computer? option.
  7. Click Yes.
  8. When you see Starting Windows® 95 on the black screen, press the F8 key at the top of your keyboard. This should take you to a Windows® 95 Startup Menu.

    NOTE: If you miss the Starting Windows® 95 text and press F8 too late, go back to Step 1 and try again.
     
  9. Select Step-By-Step Confirmation. (This is typically Choice 5.)
  10. Press ENTER. Windows® will prompt you to confirm each startup command.
  11. Press ENTER for all items listed below and ESC for any others.

  1. Press and hold the SHIFT key until you are at the Windows® Desktop screen. (This will temporarily prevent all startup applications from loading.)
  2. When all of the icons have returned to the desktop, release the SHIFT key.
  3. Place the Reader Rabbit® I Can Read With Phonics™ v1.01 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  4. Click Install and follow the onscreen instructions to install Reader Rabbit® I Can Read With Phonics™.
  5. Once the installation is complete, restart your computer to restore the original system settings.
 
Issue Playing the Game Again
Description After completing the Reader Rabbit's® learning activities, you want to play through the learning activities again using the same user name. Removing that user name from the sign-in screen will allow you to sign in again with the same name. In addition, using a different name when you sign in will allow you to repeat the activities.
Solution Complete the following steps to remove a name from the sign-in screen:
  1. Click once on the name of the player to be removed.
  2. Press and hold the CTRL key (Windows®) or Control key (Macintosh®) while you tap the R key on the keyboard.
  3. Release the CTRL (or Control) key.
  4. Click Yes when asked, "Are you sure you want to remove [the selected name] from the list?" This should remove the original name and data file.
  5. Launch the game and sign-in using the name that was removed.

NOTE: Another way to gain access to the learning activities is to use a different name at the sign-in screen.

Issue Sign-In as a Different Player
Description While playing Road to Imagination or Wordville Station in Reader Rabbit® I can Read with Phonics™ v 1.01, you want to save the progress of the current player and sign-in as a different player. A brief tutorial describes this process.
Solution Sign-In a Different Player in Road to Imagination
  1. Click on the POP or press and hold down the Ctrl key (Macintosh® users hold down the Control key) while you tap the P key on the keyboard.
  2. Release the Ctrl (or Control) key. POP (Program Options Pad) will open.
  3. Click Sign-In.
  4. Click No if asked "Would you like the program personalized just for you?" The Sign-In screen will appear.
  5. Select or add a new player.
  6. After selecting a different (or adding a new) player, click the Start button to begin playing.

NOTE: If you are playing Road to Imagination and want to sign-in to Wordville Station, you must exit Reader Rabbit® I can Read with Phonics™ v 1.01, and open the program using the following steps:

  1. Follow Steps 1 and 2 above to access open POP (Program Options Pad)
  2. When POP is open click Exit. And select Yes, to exit the program.
  3. At the desktop, click Start, choose Programs, select The Learning Company and click the Reader Rabbit® I can Read with Phonics™ menu. The program will open.
  4. Choose the Wordville Station game and wait for the Sign-In screen to appear.
  5. Sign-in and play the game.

Sign-In a Different Player in Wordville Station

  1. Click on Mat the Mouse to access POP (Program Options Pad).
  2. Click Sign-In. The Sign-In screen will appear.
    Note: If you are in Word Mine, Vowel Pond, Match Patch or Alphabet Dance when accessing POP you will need to click on Train Station. When back to the train station click on Mat then Mouse again to access POP and select Sign-In. The Sign-In screen will appear.
  3. Select or add a new player.
  4. After selecting a different (or adding a new) player, click the Start button near the bottom to begin playing.

NOTE: If you are playing Wordville Station and want to sign-in to Road to Imagination, you must exit Reader Rabbit® I can Read with Phonics™ v 1.01 and open the program using the following steps:

  1. Click Mat the Mouse to access POP (Program Options Pad) and click Exit and click Yes. The program will close.
  2. At the desktop, click Start, choose Programs, select The Learning Company and click the Reader Rabbit® I can Read with Phonics™ menu. The program will open.
  3. Choose the Road to Imagination game and wait for the Sign-In screen to appear.
  4. Sign-in and play the game
 
Issue CD Is Not Recognized
Description After inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive when prompted, the CD is not recognized. Any number of the following conditions may cause this issue: wrong CD is being used, CD needs cleaned, CD-ROM drive settings require changes, or the CD-ROM driver is corrupted, outdated, or the wrong one.
Solution By completing the procedures that follow, the CD-Read issue may be resolved. Begin with item one and proceed through the list.
  1. Verify that the correct CD is being used when prompted to insert the disc.
  2. Clean the CD. Place a small amount of nonabrasive, liquid soap on the shiny side of the disc. Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the disc in a circular motion. Rinse the disc thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or tissue paper.
  3. Change the Read Ahead setting in the following manner:
  1. Return to the desktop and right click on the My Computer icon.
  2. Select Properties from the menu that appears and click on the Performance tab in the Systems Properties window.
  3. Click the File System button and click the CD-ROM tab.
  4. Locate Optimize Access Pattern For:.
  5. Click the arrow to the right of the information field and select the No Read Ahead option.
  6. Restart Windows®.
  1. Verify that the computer is utilizing a 32-bit file system. In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3 above), click the Performance tab. Verify that the File System reads 32-bit. (If it reads anything else, contact the computer manufacturer for installation of the proper CD-ROM or hard drive drivers.)
  1. Verify that the most current version of the driver for the CD-ROM drive is being used. Contact the computer manufacturer for additional information.
  2. Try to use a different disc in the CD-ROM drive to see if it can be read.
  3. If possible, insert the CD that is not being recognized into the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if the issue remains.
Issue Program Requires WinG to Run
Description When launching Reader Rabbit® I Can Read With Phonics™ v 1.01, the following message appears: "This application requires WinG to run." This issue is typically due to one or more missing files. Locating the files on the CD and copying them to the Windows® System directory should allow the program to start without error. Consult the remainder of this technical note for additional information.
Solution Complete Procedures 1 and 2 to locate the proper files on the CD and copy them to the Windows® System directory.

Procedure 1: Show All File Extensions

Windows® 95
  1. Exit all programs and return to the desktop.
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  3. Click View on the menu bar, choose Options and select the View tab.
  4. In the Options window, locate the settings that begin with the word "Hide."
  5. Remove any checkmarks that appear before these settings.
  6. Locate the settings "Show All Files" and "Display the Full MS-DOS Path in the title bar" and place checkmarks in front of these.
  7. Click Apply and click OK.
  8. Follow the steps under Procedure 2: Copy Files from the CD-ROM to the Hard Drive.

Windows® 98

  1. Exit all programs and return to the desktop.
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  3. Click View in the menu bar, choose Folder Options and select the View tab.
  4. In the Folder Options window under the Hidden Files section, click "Show all Files."
  5. Remove the checkmark before the setting "Hide file extension for known file types" if one exists.
  6. Click Apply and click OK.
  7. Follow the steps under Procedure 2: Copy Files from the CD-ROM to the Hard Drive.

Windows® Me

  1. Exit all programs and return to the desktop.
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  3. Click Tools on the menu bar and select Folder Options.
  4. Click the View tab.
  5. Below "Hidden files and folders" locate "Show all files and folders." If "Show all files and folders" is not visible, double-click "Hidden files and folder."
  6. Click once on "Show All Files and Folders" to select it.
  7. Locate "Hide file extensions for known file types." If the box to the left of this entry is checked, click once on the checkmark to remove it.
  8. Click Apply and click OK.
  9. Follow the steps below to copy files from the CD-ROM to the hard drive.

Procedure 2: Copy Files from the CD-ROM to the Hard Drive

  1. Close all programs and return to the Windows® desktop.
  2. Insert the program CD into the CD-ROM drive. (If the program starts, close it and leave the CD in the CD-ROM drive.)
  3. Click Start, choose Find and select Files and Folders. (Windows® Me users: Click Start, select Search and click For Files or Folder.)
  4. In the window that opens, type WING*.* in the Named: field.
  5. In the Look In: field, click the down arrow and select the letter that represents the CD-ROM drive that contains the program CD.
  6. With the proper drive selected, click Find Now. (All 5 WinG files on the CD will be found and will show under the Name title.)
  7. When the search has stopped and the files are listed, click Edit on the menu bar and choose Select All. (The files should become highlighted.)
  8. Click Edit again and choose Copy from the list that appears.
  9. Return to the desktop and double-click the My Computer icon. (The Find: All Files window may need repositioned to allow access to the My Computer icon. Do not close this window.)
  10. Double-click the icon that represents the hard drive where Reader Rabbit® I Can Read With Phonics™ v 1.01 is installed. (This is typically the C: drive.)
  11. Double-click the Windows folder.
  12. In the Windows folder window, double-click the System folder.
  13. Select Edit from the menu bar and choose Paste. (This will copy the WinG files to the hard drive.)
  14. Close the window and return to the desktop.
  15. Start the Reader Rabbit® program. The issue should be resolved.
Issue Application Uses WinG32.DLL (Windows® XP)
Description When launching Reader Rabbit® I Can Read With Phonics™ v1.01 on a system running Windows® XP, the following message appears: "This application uses WinG32.DLL to run, which has been incorrectly installed in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Please move it to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory." Locating the files on the CD and copying them to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory should resolve the issue. The remainder of this technical note describes the process.
Solution Complete Procedures 1 and 2 to locate the proper files on the CD and copy them to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory on the hard drive.

Procedure 1: Show All File Extensions
 
  1. Close all programs and windows and return to the desktop.
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  3. Click Tools on the menu bar and select Folder Options.
  4. Click the View tab.
  5. Below "Hidden files and folders," locate and click once on "Show all files and folders" to select it. (If the Show all files and folders heading is not visible, double-click "Hidden files and folders" to expand the list.)
  6. Locate Hide file extensions for known file types. If the box to the left of this entry is checked, click once on the checkmark to remove it.
  7. Click Apply and click OK. This will apply the new changes and close the Folder Options window.
  8. Close all windows and follow the steps under Procedure 2.

Procedure 2: Copy Files from the CD-ROM to the Hard Drive

  1. Place the Reader Rabbit® I Can Read With Phonics™ v1.01 program CD into the CD-ROM drive. (If the program starts, close it and leave the CD in the CD-ROM drive.)
  2. Click Start and select Search. The Search Results window will open.
  3. Click the All files and folders option.
  4. Type WinG*.* in the All or part of the name: field (located on the left).
  5. Click the down arrow to the right of the Look in: field and select the drive letter that represents the CD-ROM drive containing the Reader Rabbit® I Can Read With Phonics™ v1.01 program CD.
  6. Click Search. When the search is complete, the five WinG files on the CD should be found and will appear in the right pane of the Search Results window.
  7. Click Edit on the menu bar and choose Select All. This will select all five files that were found.
  8. Click Edit on the menu bar and select Copy To Folder. The Copy Items dialog box will appear.
  9. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of the C: drive.
  10. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of the Windows folder.
  11. Click once on the System32 folder to select it.
  12. Click Copy at the bottom of the Copy Items dialog box. This will copy the five files (found in Step 6) to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory.
  13. When the file copy is complete, close all windows and return to the desktop.
  14. Launch the Reader Rabbit® I Can Read With Phonics™ v1.01 program. The issue should be resolved.
Issue Incompatible Version of the RPC Stub
Description When attempting to install the program, the message "Error 0x90070725 Incompatible version of the RPC stub" appears. An incorrect version of the OLEAUT32.DLL file in the System folder causes this issue. Downloading and installing the correct version of the OLEAUT32.DLL file should resolve the issue. Consult this technical note for additional instructions.
Solution Contact Microsoft®, or visit http://support.microsoft.com and search for Knowledge Base Article Number: Q259737 to resolve this issue.
Issue Not Enough Disk Space
Description During the installation of the Reader Rabbit's® title, the message "Not enough disk space" appears. This typically occurs when attempting to install the program to a hard drive that has more than 2 GB's of free space. The remainder of this technical note describes how to install the program.
Solution Follow the procedure below to install the program.
  1. Verify the system meets the minimum system requirements for the program. If the requirements are met (or exceeded), continue with Step 2.

    NOTE: If the system does not meet the minimum system requirements, the program may not install or run properly.
  2. Insert the Reader Rabbit's® disk into the proper drive and begin the installation.

    NOTE: If the installation does not begin, consult the instructions that came with the program to continue.
  3. When the Welcome dialog box appears, click Next. The Software License Agreement will appear.
  4. Click Yes to agree to the terms of the license agreement.
  5. At the Choose Destination Location window, press and hold the CTRL key and click Next. The Select Program Folder dialog box will appear.
  6. Release the CTRL key and follow the onscreen prompts to continue installing the program.
