Issue Program Requires WinG to Run
Description When launching Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9, the message "This application requires WinG to run" is received. This issue is typically due to one or more missing files. Locating the files on the CD and copying them to the Windows® System directory should allow the program to start without error. If you are running the program on Windows® 95 or Windows® 98, these files can be downloaded and installed. Both procedures are presented.
Solution Complete procedures 1 and 2 to locate the proper files on the CD and copy them to the Windows® System directory. Click here if you are running the program on Windows® 95/98 and prefer to download the files.

Procedure 1: Show All File Extensions

Windows® 95
  1. Exit all programs and return to the desktop.
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  3. Click View in the menu bar, choose Options and select the View tab.
  4. In the Options window, locate the settings that begin with the word "Hide."
  5. Remove any checkmarks that appear before these settings.
  6. Locate the settings "Show All Files" and "Display the Full MS-DOS Path in the title bar" and place checkmarks in front of these.
  7. Click Apply and click OK.

Windows® 98

  1. Exit all programs and return to the desktop.
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  3. Click View in the menu bar, choose Folder Options and select the View tab.
  4. In the Folder Options window under the Hidden Files section, click "Show all Files."
  5. Remove the checkmark before the setting "Hide file extension for known file types" if one exists.
  6. Click Apply and click OK.

Windows® Me

  1. Exit all programs and return to the desktop.
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  3. Click Tools in the menu bar and select Folder Options.
  4. Click the View tab.
  5. Below "Hidden files and folders" locate "Show all files and folders." If "Show all files and folders" is not visible, double click "Hidden files and folder."
  6. Click once on "Show All Files and Folders" to select it.
  7. Locate "Hide file extensions for known file types." If the box to the left of this entry is checked, click once on the check mark to remove it.
  8. Click Apply then click OK.

Procedure 2: Copy Files from the CD-ROM to the Hard Drive

  1. Close all programs and return to the Windows® desktop.
  2. Insert the program CD into the CD-ROM drive. (If the program starts, close it and leave the CD in the CD-ROM drive.)
  3. Click Start, choose Find and select Files and Folders. (Windows® Me users: Click Start, select Search and click For Files or Folder.)
  4. In the window that opens, type WING*.* in the Named: field.
  5. In the Look In: field, click the down arrow and select the letter that represents the CD-ROM drive being used.
  6. With the proper drive selected, click Find Now. (All 5 WinG files on the CD will be found and will show under the Name title.)
  7. When the search has stopped and the files are listed, click Edit in the menu bar and choose Select All. (The files should become highlighted.)
  8. Click Edit again and choose Copy from the list that appears.
  9. Return to the desktop and double-click the My Computer icon. (The Find: All Files window may need to be repositioned to allow access to the My Computer icon. Do not close this window.)
  10. Double-click the icon that represents the hard drive Reader Rabbit’s® Math is installed to. (This is typically the C: drive.)
  11. Double-click the Windows folder.
  12. In the Windows folder window, double-click the System (Windows® 95/98/Me) or System32 (Windows® 2000/XP) folder.
  13. Select Edit from the menu bar and choose Paste. (This will copy the WinG files to the hard drive.)
  14. Close the window and return to the desktop.
  15. Start the program. The issue should be resolved.

Download and Install winG.exe

NOTE: This download is for Windows® 95 and Windows® 98 only. If you are running the program on Windows® Me, follow the procedures above to copy the Files from the CD to the hard drive.

  1. Scroll down to the Associated Downloads section of this technical note.
  2. Click on the winG.exe file to begin the download process. The Extended-Download Description window will appear.
  3. Read the description and click Continue. The End User License Agreement will appear.
  4. Read the Agreement. Click Yes if you agree to all the Terms and Conditions of the       License Agreement. The Download and Usage Instructions will appear.
  5. Read the instructions. (The instructions can be printed for further reference.)
  6. Click the Download button.
  7. Follow the onscreen instructions. If Microsoft® Internet Explorer is used, confirm that "Save This Program to Disk" is selected in the File Download window.
  8. Click OK. The Save As window will appear.
  9. Select the desired Save In location. (Typically, the Windows® Desktop allows for easy access to the file. However, the file can be sent to an alternative location on the hard drive.
  10. Click Save to download the file.
  11. After the file has been downloaded, locate and then double-click on the winG.exe file. The installation prompts will appear.
  12. Follow the installation prompts.
  13. When the installation is complete close all programs and windows and then restart the computer.
  14. Launch the program. The issue should be resolved.
Issue 256 Colors Required
Description Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9 requires that the Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95) setting be set to 256 Colors. (This is a minimum requirement of the program.) Following a step-by-step procedure will allow you to change the setting or to verify that 256 Colors is chosen as one of the Display Settings.
Solution Complete the following procedure to change the color settings to 256 colors.
  1. Click Start, choose Settings and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Display icon.
  3. In the Display Properties window, select the Settings tab.
  4. Near the bottom-left portion of the window, under Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95), click the drop-down menu and choose 256 Colors.
  5. Click Apply near the bottom-right portion of the window.
  6. Choose Yes if asked, "Do you want to restart the computer?"

NOTE: If 256 Colors is not an available setting, contact the computer manufacturer for additional assistance and information.

Issue Auto-Installation Does Not Begin
Description After inserting the Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9 disc into the CD-ROM drive, the Auto-Run feature of the computer does not start the installation. Installing the program manually will resolve the issue.
Solution Follow the steps below to complete a manual installation of the program.
  1. Verify that the proper CD is inserted into the CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start and select Run. The Run dialog box will open.
  3. Type X:\SETUP.EXE in the Open: field, where the X represents the letter that identifies the CD-ROM drive.
  4. Click OK. The installation of the program should begin.
  5. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
Issue Playing the Game Again
Description After completing the Reader Rabbit's® learning activities, you want to play through the learning activities again using the same user name. Removing that user name from the sign-in screen will allow you to sign in again with the same name. In addition, using a different name when you sign in will allow you to repeat the activities.
Solution Complete the following steps to remove a name from the sign-in screen:
  1. Click once on the name of the player to be removed.
  2. Press and hold the CTRL key (Windows®) or Control key (Macintosh®) while you tap the R key on the keyboard.
  3. Release the CTRL (or Control) key.
  4. Click Yes when asked, "Are you sure you want to remove [the selected name] from the list?" This should remove the original name and data file.
  5. Launch the game and sign-in using the name that was removed.

NOTE: Another way to gain access to the learning activities is to use a different name at the sign-in screen.

Issue CD Is Not Recognized
Description After inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive when prompted, the CD is not recognized. Any number of the following conditions may cause this issue: wrong CD is being used, CD needs cleaned, CD-ROM drive settings require changes, or the CD-ROM driver is corrupted, outdated, or the wrong one.
Solution By completing the procedures that follow, the CD-Read issue may be resolved. Begin with item one and proceed through the list.
 
  1. Verify that the correct CD is being used when prompted to insert the disc.
  2. Clean the CD. Place a small amount of nonabrasive, liquid soap on the shiny side of the disc. Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the disc in a circular motion. Rinse the disc thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or tissue paper.
  3. Change the Read Ahead setting in the following manner:
  1. Return to the desktop and right click on the My Computer icon.
  2. Select Properties from the menu that appears and click on the Performance tab in the Systems Properties window.
  3. Click the File System button and click the CD-ROM tab.
  4. Locate Optimize Access Pattern For:.
  5. Click the arrow to the right of the information field and select the No Read Ahead option.
  6. Restart Windows®.
  1. Verify that the computer is utilizing a 32-bit file system. In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3 above), click the Performance tab. Verify that the File System reads 32-bit. (If it reads anything else, contact the computer manufacturer for installation of the proper CD-ROM or hard drive drivers.)
  1. Verify that the most current version of the driver for the CD-ROM drive is being used. Contact the computer manufacturer for additional information.
  2. Try to use a different disc in the CD-ROM drive to see if it can be read.
  3. If possible, insert the CD that is not being recognized into the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if the issue remains.
Issue Application Uses WinG32.DLL (Windows® XP)
Description When launching Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9 on a system running Windows® XP, the following message appears: "This application uses WinG32.DLL to run, which has been incorrectly installed in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. Please move it to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory." Locating the files on the CD and copying them to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory should resolve the issue. The remainder of this technical note describes the process.
Solution Complete Procedures 1 and 2 to locate the proper files on the CD and copy them to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory on the hard drive.

Procedure 1: Show All File Extensions
  1. Close all programs and windows and return to the desktop.
  2. Double-click the My Computer icon.
  3. Click Tools on the menu bar and select Folder Options.
  4. Click the View tab.
  5. Below "Hidden files and folders," locate and click once on "Show all files and folders" to select it. (If the Show all files and folders heading is not visible, double-click "Hidden files and folders" to expand the list.)
  6. Locate Hide file extensions for known file types. If the box to the left of this entry is checked, click once on the checkmark to remove it.
  7. Click Apply and click OK. This will apply the new changes and close the Folder Options window.
  8. Close all windows and follow the steps under Procedure 2.

Procedure 2: 44Copy Files from the CD-ROM to the Hard Drive

  1. Place the Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9 program CD into the CD-ROM drive. (If the program starts, close it and leave the CD in the CD-ROM drive.)
  2. Click Start and select Search. The Search Results window will open.
  3. Click the All files and folders option.
  4. Type WinG*.* in the All or part of the name: field (located on the left).
  5. Click the down arrow to the right of the Look in: field and select the drive letter that represents the CD-ROM drive containing the Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9 program CD.
  6. Click Search. When the search is complete, the five WinG files on the CD should be found and will appear in the right pane of the Search Results window.
  7. Click Edit on the menu bar and choose Select All. This will select all five files that were found.
  8. Click Edit on the menu bar and select Copy To Folder. The Copy Items dialog box will appear.
  9. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of the C: drive.
  10. Click the plus (+) sign to the left of the Windows folder.
  11. Click once on the System32 folder to select it.
  12. Click Copy at the bottom of the Copy Items dialog box. This will copy the five files (found in Step 6) to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory.
  13. When the file copy is complete, close all windows and return to the desktop.
  14. Launch the Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9 program. The issue should be resolved.
Issue Disabling the Electronic Registration Window
Description After successfully registering Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9, an Electronic Registration window continues to appear when starting the program. An entry in a data file causes this issue. Editing the .DAT file will disable the registration window. The procedure follows in this technical note.
Solution To disable the Electronic Registration window, use this procedure to edit the .DAT file that tracks the registration process.
  1. Close all open programs and return to the Windows® desktop.
  2. Click Start, select Find (or Search) and click Files or Folders….
  3. Type EREG077.DAT on the Named: line.
  4. Verify that the (C:) drive shows on the Look In: line.
  5. Click Find Now (or Search Now) to begin the search. When the search is complete the results will appear in the bottom (or right) pane of the Find (or Search) window.
  6. Double-click the EREG077.DAT file that is found in the Name column of the search results.
  7. In the Open With window that appears, scroll down and click Notepad to highlight it.
  8. Click OK. The file will open in Notepad.
  9. Locate the [Reader Rabbit Math Ages 4-6 Register Status Data] line.
  10. Change the line to the correct age level of Ages 6-9. The revised line [Reader Rabbit Math Ages 6-9 Register Status Data] should now appear.
  11. Use the arrow keys to move the blinking text cursor to the end of the [Reader Rabbit Math Ages 6-9 Register Status Data] line.
  12. Press ENTER. The cursor will move to the beginning of a blank line.
  13. Type TimesCompleted=1 in the blank line.
  14. Click File and choose Save.
  15. Close all open windows and launch the program. The issue should be resolved.
Issue Incompatible Version of the RPC Stub
Description When attempting to install the program, the message "Error 0x90070725 Incompatible version of the RPC stub" appears. An incorrect version of the OLEAUT32.DLL file in the System folder causes this issue. Downloading and installing the correct version of the OLEAUT32.DLL file should resolve the issue. Consult this technical note for additional instructions.

Issue Installing Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9 in Windows® XP
Description The following technical note describes how to install Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9 in Windows® XP.
Solution Installing in Windows® XP

NOTE: Users must have Administrator Privileges to Windows® XP when installing or running Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9 .
 
  1. After logging in to Windows®, insert the Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9 install CD into the CD-ROM drive.

    NOTE: If the installation does not begin, complete these steps to continue:
  1. Click Start on the Windows® taskbar.
  2. Click the Control Panel icon. The Control Panel window will open and the Pick a Category menu will appear. (If the menu does not appear, then it is likely that the Windows Classic View option is active. To change views, click Switch to Category View.)
  3. Click the Add or Remove Programs icon. (This icon appears as CD-ROM in front of an open box.) The Add or Remove Programs window will open.
  4. Click the Add New Programs icon located on the left side of the window.
  5. Click the CD (or Floppy) button. A window will open entitled: "Install Program from the Floppy Disk or CD-ROM." The following prompt will also appear: "Insert the first installation disk or CD-ROM."
  6. Insert the disk into the appropriate drive (if needed) and click Next. The Run Installation Program window will open. Windows® XP will automatically locate the correct installation file and disk drive. (The Browse button is used to select a different drive and/or file during the installation if desired.)
  7. Click Finish to begin the installation.

NOTE: If the system is setup with multiple user accounts, a window may appear entitled: "Install Programs as Other User." Some programs require the user to have Administrative Privileges in order to run the installation. If assistance is needed to manipulate user-account settings, refer to the Windows® XP Help section, the system administrator or contact technical support for the particular computer. Successful installation of the program may not be possible without Administrator Privileges. Click OK to close this window.

  1. Follow the onscreen instructions to install the program.

NOTE: If you encounter problems and are unable to successfully install the program, continue with Installing Programs Using the Program Compatibility Wizard listed below.

Installing Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9 Using the Program Compatibility Wizard

Most programs designed for an earlier version of the Windows® operating system will install and run properly on Windows® XP. In some instances, however, when attempting to install such a program, various issues can occur. The information and procedure presented in this section will help you to install a program (designed for earlier versions of Windows®) by using the Program Compatibility Wizard.

NOTE: Windows® XP allows different options for viewing graphical interface. The following procedure assumes that the default Windows® XP view settings are used, rather than the Classic Start Menu View.

  1. Uninstall the program using the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel (Steps a-c under Installing in Windows® XP).
  2. After removing the program, or if the program does not show in the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel, continue with the next step.
  3. Verify the Minimum System Requirements of the program that is to be installed. (This information will be needed as the procedure below is completed.)
  4. Close programs and return to the desktop.
  5. Insert the program (or installation) CD into the CD-ROM drive.

    NOTE: If a program installation screen appears prompting you to install the program, click the selection (i.e., No, Cancel or Exit the Installation, etc.) that will cancel the installation, and return to the desktop.
     
  6. Click Start on the Windows® taskbar.
  7. Click All Programs, choose Accessories and select Program Compatibility Wizard. The icon appears as a question mark (?). The Program Compatibility Wizard Welcome window will open.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Click the "I want to use the program in the CD-ROM drive" radio button.
  10. Click Next. A window presenting the different Windows® Compatibility Modes will open.
  11. Click the radio button next to the desired Compatibility Mode and click Next. (Consult the Minimum System Requirements of the program that is to be installed [Step 1] for system information.) The window that appears allows for the selection of 256 Colors and/or 640 X 480 Pixel Screen Resolution.

    NOTE: These display settings are not available options in Windows® XP. They are only available when running a program in Program Compatibility Mode. The only reason to choose either of these settings is if you are experiencing difficulty installing or running an older application designed to run in MS-DOS®, Windows® 3.1 or Windows® 95. If all options remain unchecked, then the current Colors and Screen Resolution settings will not be altered.

    By default, Windows® XP uses visual themes that may change the appearance or behavior of other programs, especially those games or educational programs that include intensive graphics and animation. To prevent the visual themes from affecting these programs, check Disable Visual Themes.
     
  12. Click Next. A window showing the heading "Test Your Compatibility Settings" will appear. In addition, the settings that you selected will appear.
  13. Verify that the settings are correct.

    NOTE: If the settings are not correct, click the Back button to return to the previous screen (or screens) and make the necessary changes.
     
  14. With the correct settings selected and showing in the "Test Your Compatibility Settings" window, click Next. The program installation will begin.
  15. Follow the prompts to install the program.
  16. After the installation is complete, close the program to return to the Program Compatibility Wizard.

    NOTE: After the program is closed, the window with the "Did the program work correctly?" question will reappear. The "Yes. Set this program to always use these compatibility settings" will be selected.
     
  17. If the program functioned properly using the compatibility mode that was selected in Step 11 (above), click Next-the Program Compatibility Data window will open-and continue with Step 18.

    NOTE: If the program did not function correctly, uninstall the program (using the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel: Step 1) and repeat the above procedure, choosing different compatibility settings.
     
  18. In the window that opens, select Yes or No and click Next. The Completing the Program Compatibility Wizard window will appear.
  19. Click Finish to close the window.
  20. Launch and use the program.

Issue Running Reader Rabbit's® Math Ages 6-9 in Windows® XP
Description Windows® XP includes a Compatibility Wizard designed to allow programs that were written for previous versions of Windows® to run on Windows® XP. The remainder of this technical note describes using the Program Compatibility Wizard.
Solution The Program Compatibility Wizard prompts you to test the program in different modes (environments) and with various settings. For example, if the program was originally designed to run on Windows® 95, set the compatibility mode to Windows® 95 and try running the program again. If successful, the program will start in that mode each time. The wizard also allows the use of different settings, such as switching the display to 256 colors and the screen resolution to 640 x 480 pixels.

The Program Compatibility Wizard provides step-by-step instruction for use. To run the Program Compatibility Wizard, complete the steps below.

NOTE: Windows® XP allows different options for viewing graphical interface. The following procedure assumes that the default Windows® XP view settings are used, rather than the Classic Start Menu View.
 
  1. Close programs, return to the desktop, and click Start on the Windows® taskbar.
  2. Click All Programs, choose Accessories and select Program Compatibility Wizard. The icon appears as a question mark (?). The Program Compatibility Wizard Welcome window will open.

  4. Click the "I want to choose from a list of programs" radio button. A list of programs will appear.
  5. Select the program that is to run in a Compatibility Mode.

  7. Click the radio button next to the desired Compatibility Mode and click Next. The window that appears allows for the selection of 256 Colors and/or 640 X 480 Pixel Screen Resolution.

  12. After testing the settings, minimize (or close) the program to return to the Program Compatibility Wizard.

    NOTE: After the program is minimized (or closed), the window with the "Did the program work correctly?" question will reappear. The "Yes. Set this program to always use these compatibility settings" will be selected.
     
  13. If the program functioned properly using the compatibility mode that was selected in Step 7 (above), click Next. The Program Compatibility Data window will open.

    NOTE: If the program did not function correctly, click "No, try different compatibility settings" and complete the Wizard. After completing the wizard, try the program again.
     
  14. In the window that opens, select Yes or No and click Next. The Completing the Program Compatibility Wizard window will appear.
  15. Click Finish to close the window.
  16. Launch (if necessary) and use the program.

Issue Not Enough Disk Space
Description During the installation of the Reader Rabbit's® title, the message "Not enough disk space" appears. This typically occurs when attempting to install the program to a hard drive that has more than 2 GB's of free space. The remainder of this technical note describes how to install the program.
Solution Follow the procedure below to install the program.
  1. Verify the system meets the minimum system requirements for the program. If the requirements are met (or exceeded), continue with Step 2.

    NOTE: If the system does not meet the minimum system requirements, the program may not install or run properly.
     
  2. Insert the Reader Rabbit's® disk into the proper drive and begin the installation.

    NOTE: If the installation does not begin, consult the instructions that came with the program to continue.
     
  3. When the Welcome dialog box appears, click Next. The Software License Agreement will appear.
  4. Click Yes to agree to the terms of the license agreement.
  5. At the Choose Destination Location window, press and hold the CTRL key and click Next. The Select Program Folder dialog box will appear.
  6. Release the CTRL key and follow the onscreen prompts to continue installing the program.
Issue MIDI Driver Is in Use on Windows® XP
Description When launching Reader Rabbit® Math Ages 6-9 on a Windows® XP computer, a message appears indicating that a MIDI driver is in use. Checking and changing (if needed) the multimedia settings should help to resolve the issue. Consult the remainder of this note for the procedure.
Solution Complete the following procedure to verify multimedia settings and to change these if needed:
  1. Close all programs and return to the desktop.
  2. Click Start and select Control Panel.
  3. In the Control Panel window, double-click Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices.
  4. Double-click Sounds and Audio Devices.
  5. Click the Audio tab.
  6. Click the down arrow next to MIDI Music Playback and change the Single Instrument selection to MPU-401 (or one most similar to this).
  7. Click Apply and click OK.
  8. Close all open windows and run the program.
Issue Cannot Find Printer
Description When printing from Reader Rabbit’s® Math Ages 6-9, the message ‘Cannot Find Printer’ appears. This issue occurs when the printer is attached to a USB port and that port is not recognized by the program. Downloading and installing a print driver to emulate a LPT connection and setting that printer as the default printer will help resolve this issue. (LPT is the usual designation for a parallel port.) Consult the remainder of this technical note for additional information.
Solution Downloading and Installing an Emulation Driver

Contact the printer manufacturer to obtain an emulation driver. Most drivers are available and can be downloaded from the printer manufacturer's website. After downloading the updated driver, continue with the procedure that follows.

Setting the Updated Printer as the Default Printer

To set the updated printer as the default printer, follow the steps below for the operating system in use.

Windows® 98/ME
 
  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. Double-click Printers.
  3. Right-click on the updated printer and choose Set as Default. A checkmark will appear beside the printer icon.
  4. Launch and use the program.

Windows® 2000

  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. Double-click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Printers.
  4. Right-click on the updated printer and choose Set as Default. A checkmark will appear beside the printer icon.
  5. Launch and use the program.

Windows® XP

  1. Click Start and choose Printers and Faxes.
  2. Right-click on the updated printer and choose Set as Default. A checkmark will appear beside the printer icon.
  3. Launch and use the program.
