Auto-Installation Does Not Begin |

After
inserting the Reader Rabbit Preschool® Sparkle Star Rescue!™ CD into
the CD-ROM drive, the Auto-Run feature of the computer does not
start the installation. Installing the program manually should
resolve the issue. Follow the steps below to
complete a manual installation of the program.
- Verify that the proper CD is inserted into the CD-ROM drive.
- Click Start and select Run. The Run dialog box will open.
- Type X:\SETUP.EXE in the Open: field. (Replace the X
with the correct drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.)
- Click OK. The installation of the program should begin.
- Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
NOTE: If the installation does not begin after completing the
above procedure, or an error such as "Cannot find the file d:\setup.exe
(or one of its components). Make sure that the path and filename are
correct and that all libraries are available" occurs, complete the
following steps:
- Verify that the correct drive letter for the CD-ROM drive
was entered in Step 3 above.
- If the correct letter was entered and the installation does
not begin, complete the procedures for
CD-Read: CD Is Not Recognized below.

After
inserting the CD into the CD-ROM drive when prompted, the CD is not
recognized. Any number of the following conditions may cause this
issue: the wrong CD is used, the CD needs cleaned, the CD-ROM drive
settings are not compatible with the CD, an incorrect CD-ROM driver
is installed or the CD-ROM firmware or driver is outdated.
By completing the procedures that follow, the
CD-Read issue may be resolved. First, verify that the correct CD is
in the CD-ROM drive and that the label on the CD is facing up. Once
you have verified that the correct CD is in the CD-ROM drive,
complete the steps under Clean the CD.
Clean the CD
- Place a small amount of nonabrasive, liquid
soap on the shiny side of the CD.
- Using your fingertips and warm water,
gently rub the soap on the CD in a circular motion.
- Rinse the CD thoroughly and dry it using a
clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels
or tissue paper.
- Try the program again.
If the issue continues, complete the steps below
for Change the Read-Ahead Settings.
Change the Read-Ahead Settings
- Close all program windows and return to the
desktop.
- Right-click the My Computer icon and, using
the left mouse button, click Properties from the menu that
appears.
- Click the Performance tab in the Systems
Properties window.
- Verify that the File System reads 32-bit.
(If it reads anything else, contact the computer manufacturer
for the proper CD-ROM or hard drive drivers.)
- Click the File System button and click the
CD-ROM tab.
- Locate Optimize Access Pattern For.
- Click the arrow to the right of the
information field and select the No Read Ahead option.
- Click Apply and click OK to close the File
System Properties window.
- Click Close to close the System Properties
window.
- Click Yes when prompted to Restart
Windows®.
- When Windows® restarts, try the program
again.
If the issue continues complete the steps below
for Turn off DMA.
Turn off DMA
- Follow Steps 1 and 2 above to open the
System Properties.
- In the System Properties window (Step 2
above), click the Device Manager tab.
- Choose View Devices By Type.
- In the list that appears, locate CD-ROM or
CD-ROM Controller.
- Click once on the plus (+) sign next to
this listing.
- Double-click on the name that appears.
- In the CD-ROM Properties window, click the
Settings tab.
- Locate the DMA checkbox and remove the
checkmark (if one exists).
- Click OK to close the CD-ROM Properties
window.
- Click Close to close the System Properties
window.
- Click Yes when prompted to Restart
Windows®.
- When Windows® restarts, try the program
again.
If the CD is still not recognized, try the
following:
- Try to use a different CD in the CD-ROM
drive to see if it can be read.
- If possible, insert the problem CD into
the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if the issue
remains.
- Verify that the most current version of
the driver and firmware for the CD-ROM drive is used. Contact
the computer manufacturer for additional information.

Exit the Program: Save the Progress |

While
in the game portion of Reader Rabbit Preschool® Sparkle Star
Rescue!™, you are ready to exit the game and save the progress. This
brief tutorial describes the steps required to accomplish this.
Follow the steps below to exit the program and to
automatically save the progress of the player.
- Click Map found in the lower-right corner of the screen.
- Click the Exit button on the map.
- Click Yes when asked, “Do you want to stop playing?” This
will close the program.

Remove a Name from the Sign-in Screen |

After
playing Reader Rabbit Preschool® Sparkle Star Rescue!™, you want to
remove a name from the sign-in screen. The steps to remove a name
from the sign-in screen are described in this technical note.
To remove a name from the sign-in screen, complete
the steps that follow.
NOTE: Once you remove a name from the sign-in screen, the
name can be added again; however, the history cannot be recovered.
- Click once on the name of the player to be removed.
- Press and hold the CTRL key (Windows®) or Control key
(Macintosh®) while you tap the R key on the keyboard.
- Release the CTRL (or Control) key.
- Click Yes when asked, "Are you sure you want to remove [the
selected name] from the list?" This should remove the original
name and data file.

Sign-in
as a Different Player |

While
playing Reader Rabbit Preschool® Sparkle Star Rescue!™, you want to
save the current player’s progress and sign-in as a different
player. A brief tutorial describes this process.
Follow the steps below to sign-in as a different
player.
- Click Map found in the lower-right corner of the screen.
- Click the Options button on the map. This will open the
Option Menu screen.
- Click Sign In, which is the Typewriter icon located in the
top-left corner of the Options Menu. You will return to the
sign-in screen.
- Select or add a new player.
- After selecting a different (or adding a new) player, click
the Start button near the top of the sign-in screen to begin
playing.

Sound Skips
or Is Garbled |

When
playing Reader Rabbit Preschool® Sparkle Star Rescue!™, the sound
skips or is garbled. A sound acceleration setting can cause this
issue. Lowering the sound acceleration can help to resolve the
issue. Follow the steps below to lower the
sound acceleration.
- Click Start, select Settings and click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Multimedia icon.
NOTE: For Windows® Me users, double-click the Sounds and
Multimedia icon.
- Under the Playback heading, click Advanced Properties.
- Click the Performance tab.
- Click the Hardware Acceleration slide bar and keep the mouse
button pressed.
- By moving the mouse, slide the indicator needle to None.
- Release the mouse button.
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Click OK again.
- Close the Control Panel and launch and use the program. The
issue should be resolved.

Cipher Strength Appears as 0-Bit |

On
Windows® Me, after installing Reader Rabbit Preschool® Sparkle Star
Rescue!™, the following message displays: "Cipher Strength Appears
as 0-Bit." This issue occurs when trying to access a secure Web site
using Microsoft® Internet Explorer 5.5. The Learning Company® has
developed a patch that resolves the issue.
Follow the procedure below to download and install the Zero Bit
Encryption Patch.
- Scroll down to the Associated Downloads
section of this technical note.
- Click the Zero_Bit_Encryption_Patch.exe
file to begin the download process.
- Read the description and click Continue.
The End User License Agreement will appear.
- Read the Agreement. Click Yes if you agree
to all the Terms and Conditions of the License Agreement.
- Read the instructions. (The instructions
can be printed for further reference.)
- Click the Download button.
- Follow the onscreen instructions. If you
are using Microsoft® Internet Explorer, confirm that "Save This
Program to Disk" is selected in the File Download window.
- Click OK.
- The Save As window will appear. Select the
desired Save In location. (Typically, the Windows® Desktop
allows for easy access to the file. However, the file can be
sent to an alternative location on the hard drive.)
- Click Save to download the file.
- After the file has been downloaded, close
all programs and windows.
- Locate and double-click the
Zero_Bit_Encryption_Patch.exe file to begin the
installation.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to
install the patch.
- Once the installation is complete, restart
the computer. The issue should be resolved.

Microsoft® Office Products: Unable to Open
|
| |
After
installing Reader Rabbit Preschool® Sparkle Star Rescue!™ on a
system running Windows® 95, programs such as Microsoft® Word,
Outlook, AOL®, WordPerfect®, etc. will not run. In addition, an
error message similar to one of the following may appear when
attempting to launch or use any of the above programs: "WINWORD
caused an invalid page fault in module < unknown >" or "A Fatal
Exception has occurred." This issue is generally caused by the
installation of a later version of a .DLL file. Extracting the
original .DLL file from the Windows® 95 CD will help to resolve the
issue. Consult the remainder of this technical note for additional
information. Reader Rabbit Preschool®
Sparkle Star Rescue!™ installs a later version of the ADVAPI32.DLL
file (4.80.1675) than that used by some older programs. Extracting
the ADVAPI32.DLL file from the Windows® 95 CD should resolve the
issue.

| When
attempting to launch Reader Rabbit Preschool® Sparkle Star Rescue!™
on a Macintosh® system, the following message appears: "The
application 'Preschool Sparkle Star Rescue' could not be opened
because 'CarbonLib could not be found." Attempting to launch the
program on a Macintosh® computer running OS 8.5 will cause this
issue. Reader Rabbit Preschool® Sparkle
Star Rescue!™ requires OS 8.6- 9.1 or OS X to run properly. For more
information, read the minimum system
requirements. |

installing Reader Rabbit Preschool® Sparkle Star Rescue!™, you want
to run the program from the hard drive without using the CD. Consult

Reader Rabbit Preschool® Sparkle Star Rescue!™
requires the CD to run. Copying the entire contents of the CD to the
hard drive and running setup from the hard drive (rather than the
CD) will install the program; however, the CD is required when

attempting to install the program, the message "Error 0x90070725
Incompatible version of the RPC stub" appears. An incorrect version
of the OLEAUT32.DLL file in the System folder causes this issue.

Installation Steps for Windows® XP
NOTE: The following procedure will temporarily disable
background programs and restart the computer in the cleanest
possible configuration. Installing software using this configuration
will minimize conflicts.
When installing on Windows® XP, the user must be logged in to
Windows® with administrator privileges.
- Close all programs and return to the
Windows® desktop.
- Click Start and select Run.
- Type MSCONFIG in the Open: field.
- Click OK. A System Configuration window
will open.
- Click the Startup tab.
- Record the Startup items that are checked
so this customized configuration can be restored after the
installation.
- Deselect all items under the Startup tab.
- Click Apply.
- Click OK.
- Click Yes when prompted to restart the
computer.
- When the computer has restarted, login to
Windows® as a user with administrator privileges. If you do not
have administrator privileges, contact the system administrator.
- After logging in to Windows® with
administrator privileges, insert the program CD into the CD-ROM
drive.
- Click Install and follow the onscreen
instructions to complete the installation.
- Once the installation is complete, follow
the steps below to restore the system to its original
configuration.
Restoring the Original System Configuration:
Windows® XP
- Close all programs and return to the
Windows® desktop.
- Click Start and select Run.
- Type MSCONFIG in the Open: field.
- Click OK. The System Configuration Utility
window will open.
- Click the Startup tab.
- Refer to the list of items recorded
previously and check the box next to each item on the list.
- Click Apply.
- Click OK.
- Click Yes when prompted to restart the
computer.
- Launch and use the program.
Installation Steps for Windows®
98/Me
NOTE: The following procedure will temporarily disable

- Record the Startup selection
that is shown so that it can be referred to after the
installation.
- Click Selective Startup.
NOTE: If the Load Startup Group item is grayed-out, the
Startup Group has been customized. Click the Startup tab at the
top and record the startup items that are checked so this
customized configuration can be restored after the installation.
- Remove the checkmark next to
the items that follow. (This will temporarily prevent all
startup applications from loading when Windows® is restarted.)
- Load startup group items
- Process Autoexec.bat
file (Windows® 98)
- Process Config.sys file
(Windows® 98)
- Load Static VxDs
(Windows® Me)
- Load environment
variables (Windows® Me)
- Click Apply.
- Click OK.
- Click Yes when prompted to
restart the computer.
- After the computer has
restarted and the Windows® desktop returns, insert the program
CD into the CD-ROM drive.
- Click Install and follow the
on screen instructions to complete the installation.
- Once the installation is
complete, follow the steps below to restore the system to its
original configuration.
Restoring the Original System
Configuration: Windows® 98/Me
- Close all programs and
return to the Windows® desktop.
- Click Start and select Run.
- Type MSCONFIG in the
Open: field.
- Click OK. The System
Configuration Utility window will open.
- Refer to the list of items
recorded previously and check the box next to each item on the
list for the General tab or Startup tab or both.
- Click Apply.
- Click OK.
- Click Yes when prompted to
restart the computer.
- Launch and use the program.
Installation Steps for Windows®
2000
NOTE: When installing on Windows® 2000, the user must be
logged in to Windows® with administrator privileges.
- Press and hold the CTRL and
ALT keys and tap the DELETE key once. A Windows® 2000 Security
window should appear.
- Release all keys.
- Click the Task Manager
button.
- In the Windows® Task Manager
dialog box, select the Applications tab.
- Click once on an application
in the list to select it. (If no applications are listed, skip
to Step 8 and proceed.)
- Click End Task.
- Repeat Steps 5 and 6 until
all applications are closed.
- With all applications
closed, click File and select Exit Task Manager.
- Place the program CD into
the CD-ROM drive.
- Click Install and follow the
on screen instructions to complete the installation.
- Once the installation is
complete, restart Windows®. This will restart the applications
that were closed during this procedure.
- Launch and use the program.
Installation Steps for Macintosh®
- Close all windows and return to the
desktop.
- Insert the CD into the proper drive.
- Double-click the CD icon. The contents of
the CD will appear.
- Double-click the program's installer icon
and click Continue.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to
complete the installation.
- Launch and use the program.

Not enough disk space |
| When attempting to install Madeline,
Cluefinder or Reader Rabbit titles, the message "Not enough
disk space" appears. I have more than enough space. (This
typically occurs when attempting to install the program to a
hard drive that is larger than 2 GB.) |

Follow
the procedure below to install the program.
1. Place the Program CD into the CD-ROM drive. Allow time for the
CD-ROM drive to start up. If auto-install begins, skip to Step 5.
(If auto-run does not begin, continue with the next step.)
2. Click Start and select Run. The Run dialog box will appear.
3. Type D:\Setup.exe in the Open: field and click OK. (If the CD-ROM
drive containing the CD is represented by a different letter,
replace D with that letter.)
4. Click Yes to install the program.
5. When the Welcome dialog box appears, click Next. The Software
License Agreement will appear.
6. Click Yes, if you agree to the terms of the agreement.
7. **HERE IS THE IMPORTANT STEP** : At the Choose Destination
Location, PRESS AND HOLD DOWN the CTRL key and click Next with the
your mouse. The Select Program Folder dialog box will appear. (This
by-passes the disk check)
9. Release the CTRL key and follow the on-screen prompts to continue
installing the program. |

This patch resolves an issue in which the following
message displays: "Cipher strength appears as 0-bit." The issue occurs
