Issue Corrupt Video at River Crossing
Description
Solution When crossing rivers, either no video appears or a corrupted video appears at the top of the screen. The Oregon Trail® 4th Edition requires a 3D accelerator card that supports OpenGL®. If a 3D accelerator is not present, you may disable OpenGL® graphics to resolve this issue. To disable OpenGL®, follow the steps below.

  1. Insert The Oregon Trail® 4th Edition CD #1 into the CD-ROM drive.

  2. Click Play Oregon Trail.

  3. Click Options.

  4. Click River Display.

  5. Click Disable 3D Controls.

  6. Click OK. Open GL® is now disabled for the river crossings. You should now be able to run The Oregon Trail® 4th Edition without the appearance of a corrupted video.

Issue Cannot Find the Join a Wagon Feature
Description
Solution The Join a Wagon feature, listed in the CD-ROM insert of The Oregon Trail® 4th Edition, was not included in the final release. However, there are many ways to begin a journey on the Oregon Trail. The Join a Wagon feature was included in earlier versions of The Oregon Trail® and was not meant to be included in The Oregon Trail® 4th Edition. The CD insert mentions the feature, though it is not in the program.

A quick way to begin a journey on the trail is to ask the first two people you meet to join your party, purchase a wagon and oxen at the stables, and then purchase a package deal at the supply store.

Issue Character Voices Are Too Fast
Description
Solution The voices of the characters in The Oregon Trail® 4th Edition may play at a rate that is too fast. You will need to adjust QuickTime™ settings to resolve this issue. To adjust the QuickTime™ 3.0 audio settings, follow the instructions below:

  1. Click the Start button, select Settings and then choose Control Panel. A window titled Control Panel will appear.

  2. Locate and double-click the QuickTime icon. A window titled QuickTime Settings will appear.

  3. In the drop-down menu at the top of the window, select Sound Out.

  4. In the Choose a Device for Playback drop-down menu, select Wave Out.

  5. In the Rate drop-down menu, select 44.100 Khz.

  6. In the Choose a Device for Playback drop-down menu, click Directsound.

  7. In the Rate drop-down menu, select 44.100 khz.

  8. Close the QuickTime 3.0 Control Panel, and restart the program. In most cases, The Oregon Trail® 4th Edition should now function correctly.

  9. If the voices are still too fast, repeat the procedures above, adjusting the rates to 48.000 khz. Restart The Oregon Trail. Note that this setting is often required with Riptide™ sound cards.

Issue Rundll or Quicktime.cpl Errors During Install
Description
Solution During the QuickTime™ installation for The Oregon Trail® 4th Edition, the following error may appear: "Rundll. Errors loading C:\Windows\System\Quicktime.cpl." The installation will continue, but upon trying to use QuickTime™, this message appears: "QuickTime cannot find the file QuickTime.CPL. This file is required to run QuickTime." The instructions below originated from the AppleCare Tech Info Library available at www.apple.com/support/. Note that if you are not comfortable with changing settings on your computer, you may wish to contact your computer manufacturer.

The QuickTime™ 3 installer uses a Temp folder in your boot drive for storing files needed during installation. Under Windows® 95/98, this temp directory is located in the path "C:\Windows\Temp." This Temp directory may contain files from previous installations, that may interfere with the installation of QuickTime 3 (or other applications).

1) Locate the Temp folder using the paths defined for your operating system and rename the folder to "OldTemp" or similar name.

2) Create a new folder in its place with the name "Temp" (carefully using the same case and leaving out spaces or other characters).

3) Copy the Quicktime30.EXE file from Oregon Trail® 4th Edition disc one.

a)Double click the icon labeled My Computer.

b)Right click on the CD-ROM icon.

c)In the drop down menu left click on Explore.

d)Double click on the folder labeled Plugins.

e)Double click on the folder labeled Quick Time.

f)Right click on the icon labeled QuickTime 30.EXE.

g)Left click on copy.

h)Return to the TEMP folder created in step 2.

i)Left click Edit in the menu bar.

j)Left click Paste in the drop down menu.

Note: The next troubleshooting step involves restarting the computer in Windows® "Safe Mode." This is similar to starting up the Mac OS with "Extensions Off."

4) To startup the computer in safe mode, hold down the shift key before and during the Windows® 95 splash screen. Safe Mode can be recognized by the words "Safe Mode" appearing in all four corners of the screen. You may notice a different resolution, or loss of colors. This is normal.

5) Once the computer has restarted in Safe Mode, return to the Temp folder in C:\Windows\Temp.

6) Find the icon pasted into that folder, Quicktime 30.EXE. Double-click the icon to launch the QuickTime 3.0 installer.

7) Follow the onscreen prompts until you get to the "Full Install" window. This window includes "Minimum" and "Custom" options.

8) Press CTRL+ESC to display the "Start" menu.

9) Use the "Start" menu to navigate to Programs: Windows Explorer.

10) Using the Windows Explorer, verify that the following files are located in C:\Windows\Temp

NOTE: The file names shown below include extensions, viewed by unchecking the option for "hide file extensions for known file types" option. This can be found in the Windows Explorer: View: Options dialog box.

- "_istmp0.dir" = installer shield folder

- "_ins0432._mp"

- "_inst32i.ex_"

- "_inz0432._mp"

- "_isdel.exe"

- "_setup.dll"

- "_setup.lib"

- "_wutl95.dll"

- "data.z" = main QuickTime™ 3 data file

- "QTtext.dll"

- "readme.wri"

- "setup.bmp"

- "setup.exe"

- "setup.ini"

- "setup.ins" = optional for Windows® 95 installation

- "welcome.bmp" (this one only appears on version 1.1 of the program; is not required in version 1.0)

11) Locate and move any missing files into C:\Windows\Temp directory using the Windows Explorer.

12) Close the Windows Explorer and continue with the installation.

If the installation continues to fail, it is possible that there is a software issue preventing QuickTime™ 3 from being installed, such as a software conflict or file association issue within the Windows Registry.

Issue Screen Flashes or Display Is Corrupt
Description
Solution The screen may flash during transitions or other corrupt display symptoms may occur while playing The Oregon Trail® 4th Edition. This may be caused by an incompatibility with a background application resulting from a recent Macromedia™ Shockwave™ installation. The background application is called Shockwave Remote™. To correct the video corruption, remove the shortcut named Shockwave Init from the StartUp folder, and then restart your computer. To remove the shortcut, follow the procedures below.

  1. Click the Start button, select Settings, and then click Taskbar & Start Menu. A window titled Taskbar Properties will appear.

  2. Click the Start Menu Programs tab.

  3. Click the Remove button. A window titled Remove Shortcuts/Folders will appear.

  4. Locate and double-click the folder labeled StartUp.

  5. Locate and click once on the Shockwave Init shortcut icon.

  6. Click the Remove button. The Shockwave Init icon will be removed from the list.

  7. Click Close to close the Remove Shortcuts/Folders window.

  8. Click OK to close the Taskbar Properties window.

  9. Restart your computer and run The Oregon Trail® 4th Edition. The program should function correctly.
Note: The Shockwave Init shortcut is a Terminate and Stay Resident program (TSR) that is designed to run in the background. The Shockwave Init TSR controls the Shockwave Remote Control Panel. The Remote Control can now be activated manually from the Start Menu by locating and selecting Shockwave and then Shockwave Remote under Programs.

If the issue persists (or if a Shockwave Init shortcut was not found in the Startup folder), updating or reinstalling the video driver should resolve the issue. Video driver updates can be obtained from the appropriate manufacturer’s web site, or by contacting the computer manufacturer for update and download information.

Issue Error: ISSET_SE Caused a General Protection Fault
Description
Solution During the installation of Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 10, a message may appear as "ISSET_SE caused a General Protection Fault in module [various]." This issue is most often due to an anti-virus program running in the background. Two other factors may also cause the issue: using Point32 or MSWheel mouse programs or using a mouse driver that conflicts with the mouse device. Closing all background applications or installing the correct mouse driver should resolve the issue. Close Background Applications.

  1. Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys at the same time. While these keys are being pressed, tap the Delete key once. A Close Program window will now appear, listing all the programs that are currently running.

  2. Close all programs except Explorer and Systray. To do this, click on a name in the list and then click the End Task button. The display will return to the desktop.

  3. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to return to the Close Program window.

  4. Continue closing all background programs until only Explorer and Systray are shown in the Close Program window and then press the Cancel button.

NOTE: Some virus-scan programs, such as Norton® Anti-Virus, must be disabled before the above procedure will work. Consult your Anti-Virus' program documentation for instructions on how it is temporarily disabled.

Verify the Correct Mouse Driver.

  1. In the device manager, compare the listed mouse driver with the actual mouse attached to the computer.

  2. To open the Device Manager, click on Start and click on Settings and select Control Panel. Double-click on the System icon in the Control Panel this will open the System Properties window. Click on the Device Manager near the top of the window.

  3. If the listed mouse driver is incorrect, remove and then re-install your mouse drivers. Contact the manufacturer of your computer or mouse if you need assistance with the mouse drivers.
