Installation Steps Explained for Print Shop® 15
|
| |
If you
have ever questioned how to complete a particular step during an
installation, the information provided in this technical note
describes The Print Shop® 15 installation.
This summary will help you make choices when installing The Print
Shop® 15.
INTRODUCTION
During installation, system and program files are copied from the CD
of the program to the hard drive of the computer. Most installation
procedures consist of a series of windows that present different
options. The option selected for you is called the default option.
If you are unsure what to select, using the default option is
recommended.
All installations include similar steps; however, because these
steps can vary from program to program, it is important to read each
prompt or message carefully.
GETTING STARTED
The Print Shop® installation typically begins when the Install CD is
inserted into the proper drive. After the drive starts up, a screen
titled "The Print Shop" will appear with Install and Close options.
After choosing the Install option, the InstallShield Wizard dialog
appears with a progress bar appears showing an increase from 0% to
100%. During this progress, temporary files required for the
installation are copied from the CD to a TEMP folder on the hard
drive. It is important to note that this is not the installation of
the program itself.
NOTE: If The Print Shop® 10 or later is currently installed,
The Print Shop Installation dialog box will appear after clicking
the Install option (and before the InstallShield Wizard dialog
appears). The version of The Print Shop® that is currently installed
will be displayed. Clicking the Next button will uninstall the
version that is currently installed and continue with The Print
Shop® 15 installation. This will not remove your saved art and
projects.
Clicking the Cancel button will exit the installation. The program
must be uninstalled before version 15 can be installed.
WELCOME WINDOW
The first window that requires any user interaction is the Welcome
window. Here you are welcomed to the installation and instructed to
close any programs that are running. If no programs are running,
read the welcome information and proceed with the installation. If
programs are running, click Cancel to stop the installation. Close
the programs and begin the installation again.
A note about closing programs…
Consider this: You start your computer to install a program. Except
for turning the computer on, nothing else happened. Right? Maybe.
By starting your computer, you set into motion an entire series of
program launches. Virus-protection programs, media applications, and
applications that enhance other applications are just a few of the
"programs" that launch when the computer starts. These programs,
called background programs because they run unnoticed in the
background of your system, can cause conflicts during the
installation.
Closing programs that you launch and those that launch on their own
will help to prevent conflicts during installation. It is
recommended that you temporarily close background programs before
beginning a program installation.
NOTE: Consult the computer manufacturer before closing
background programs to identify the programs that must remain
running.
BEYOND THE WELCOME WINDOW
Most installers—the small program responsible for initiating and
completing the installation—will present a progression of windows
with Next or Continue buttons. Clicking these buttons allows you to
advance to the next step. In many cases, a Back button is also
available if you want to change an option or review a previous
screen. Clicking Cancel will most likely exit and cancel the
installation process.
After clicking Next to advance, the license agreement for the
program is likely to appear. This agreement describes the license
and terms under which the software can be legally used. After
reviewing the agreement, the option to click Yes is offered. If you
do not agree to the terms outlined in the agreement and want to stop
the installation, click No.
DESTINATION FOLDER
As the installation continues, a window describing where the files
of the program are to be copied to will appear. A Destination Folder
with a default option is typically displayed. In general, there is
no need to change options in this window.
As you advance through the installation, a window identifying a
destination folder for the program icons or shortcuts will appear.
It is recommended to allow the default to remain selected. Clicking
Next will advance you to the next window.
At this point, a screen confirming the selected options, or
additional options specific to the program you are installing may
appear. Read all text shown in these windows. If choices are
presented, the default option is usually all that is needed. As
always, the Back button will allow you to return to a previous
window and change an option.
INSTALLATION OPTIONS
Many programs offer installation options. These options can include
Minimal, Typical or Full. Different installation options indicate a
difference in how much of the program is copied to the computer hard
drive. When an installation option is selected, a description for
that option appears to the right.
When deciding which option to choose, remember that installing more
of the program to the hard drive will use hard drive space, and
usually reduces the need to insert a CD to use the program. In
addition, the need to swap or switch discs while using the program
may be reduced.
If you are unsure which option to use, the Broderbund® Technical
Support team suggests choosing the option that is selected as the
default.
After clicking Next to continue, the amount of space required for
the installation type selected will be displayed along with the
amount of space available. If the required space is more than the
available space, clicking Back and choosing the Minimum (or Typical)
install option may allow you to continue the installation.
Otherwise, you need to Cancel the install and free up some hard
drive space. The available space must be more than the required
space to continue the installation.
COPY TIME AND OTHER CHOICES
After all options have been selected, the installer will begin the
process of copying files. A progress bar will display the progress
of the installer as the files are copied.
Prompts to install other separate components included with or needed
by the program such as DirectX®, QuickTime®, MovieShop® (included
with some editions), etc. may appear. It is recommended that you
select the options to allow the components to install. The
installation of these additional components can occur automatically,
or a separate installation procedure for the particular component
may display.
Canceling the installation of one or more of these components can
cause the program to function improperly, or can result in an
incomplete installation of the program. During this stage, following
the prompts is recommended.
REGISTRATION
Once the copy process is complete, an option to register the program
typically appears. Choices include: electronic (online)
registration, print the registration, or register later.
INSTALLATION COMPLETE. FINALLY!
Finally, an information window appears explaining that the
installation is complete. This window can include an option that
allows you to review a Readme file for the installed program, or it
may include a message indicating that restarting the computer is
required. It is good practice to read the Readme file before using
the program. Restarting as prompted will allow the computer to
update files and apply any changes resulting from the installation.
After the computer has restarted, the program is ready to use.

CD or DVD
Is Not Recognized |
| |
After
inserting the disc (CD or DVD) into the CD or DVD drive when
prompted, the disc is not recognized. Any number of the following
conditions may cause this issue: wrong disc or drive is used, disc
needs cleaned, disc drive settings require changes, or the driver
for the CD or DVD drive is corrupted, outdated, or the wrong one.
The remainder of this technical note describes how to proceed.
Completing the following procedures will help to
resolve the CD/DVD-Read issue. Begin with item one and proceed
through the list.
- Verify that the correct CD or DVD is
being used when prompted to insert the disc.
- For the DVD version of The Print Shop®
Deluxe 15, consider the following:
 | DVD-ROM drives can read both DVD's
and CD's.
|
 | CD-ROM drives, however, can read only
CD's. |
Verify that the drive containing The Print
Shop® Deluxe 15 DVD is a DVD drive and not a CD-ROM drive. Most
DVD drives will have DVD printed on the front of the
drive.
- Clean the disc. Place a small amount of
nonabrasive, liquid soap on the shiny side of the CD or DVD.
Using your fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the
disc in a circular motion. Rinse the disc thoroughly and dry it
