Blank Screen Shows
During Introduction Movies |
| After a successful
installation of Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?™, the introduction
movie plays, but the screen is blank. This issue typically occurs
after launching the program while moving the mouse during the
introduction movie sequence. Changing a QuickTime™ 32 video setting
should resolve the issue. |
Complete the steps
below to locate and change the QuickTime® 32 video setting.
- Close the program and return to the desktop.
- Click Start, choose Settings, and select
Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel window, double-click the
QuickTime® 32 icon.
- In the window that opens, click the More button
near the bottom.
- Click the Video tab shown near the top of the
window.
- Under the Optimization heading, select Bitmap
BMP for the Draw Method, and click Apply.
- Click Yes to Apply modifications.
- Click Close.
- Start the program. The issue should be
resolved.

Duplicate Color
Puzzle Piece in Case 14 |
| As the
player progresses through Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?®, a
duplicate color puzzle piece in Case 14 is discovered. (This
duplicate piece takes the place of another color needed to complete
the case.) A specific procedure can be completed to resolve this
known issue. |
Complete
the following procedure to restart Case 14.
- With the program running, click on File and
select Save.
- In the list that appears, choose Return to
Roster.
- Choose the player name and select Play.
- Choose Restart when prompted, "Do you want to
continue or restart your case from the beginning?" Case 14 will be
restarted from the beginning.
- When the Declaration puzzle is presented, place
the cards in descending order from top to bottom.
NOTE: List the color of the card as the
first line of the card. For example:

SNDREC32.EXE
and SOUNDREC.CNT Cannot be Found |
| While using Where in
Time is Carmen Sandiego?®, a message indicating that "SNDREC32.EXE
and SOUNDREC.CNT cannot be found" is received. This type of error
will, typically, occur when Windows® 95 has been installed without
certain sound related multimedia components. (The error is not
specific to any particular sound card.) |
- Click File.
- Select Save.
- Select Return to Roster.
- Choose the desired player name.
- Select Play. When prompted "Do you want to
continue or restart your case from the beginning?", choose
Restart. This will allow Case 14 to start from the beginning.
- When the Declaration puzzle is presented, place
the cards in descending order, from top to bottom.
Note: List with the
color of the card as the first line of the card.

Error: Reset
...Colors to 256 (Windows® 3.1) |
| The error message
"Reset your colors to 256" is received shortly after launching Where
in Time is Carmen Sandiego?®. This message is typically received
when the program is installed on a computer using Windows® 3.1. On
such a system, the program does not support color settings other
than 256 colors. (This is a minimum system requirement.) Checking
the current display settings should help to identify the source of
the message. |
Check the video
display line in Windows® Setup to verify that 256 colors has been
chosen. To do this, complete the following procedure.
- Close the program and return Program Manager.
- Click the Main icon in Program Manager.
- Double-click the Windows® Setup icon.
- Verify that the Display line shows 256 colors.
NOTE: If 256 colors
is not shown, consult the following:
 | One or more of the display drivers could have
this resolution listed. However, in most cases, these display
drivers will not work properly and could cause Windows® to crash.
Contact the computer manufacturer or the video card manufacturer
for additional information and assistance. |
 | If the Windows® display drivers have been
obtained from the computer or video card manufacturer, refer to
the user's manual for additional instructions. |

ThreadsLib Could Not
Be Found |
| The error
"ThreadsLib could not be found" occurs when running the program on a
PowerPC® with System 7.1.2. |
Where in
Time is Carmen Sandiego?® requires the Threads Manager extension in
order to run properly. This extension is located on the program CD.
To install the extension:
- Close all programs that are running.
- Insert the Carmen Sandiego® CD into the CD-ROM drive.
- Double-click the Multimedia Extensions folder.
- Double-click the System 7.1.2 Users folder.
- Drag this extension on top of the CLOSED System folder on the
hard drive.
- Click OK to confirm the transfer of the extension to the
Extensions folder.
- Restart the computer and relaunch the program.

Requires DirectX® 3.0 |
| The error "Where in
Time is Carmen Sandiego requires DirectX 3.0" occurs when installing
the program on Windows® 95. |
This message can occur
even if DirectX® 3.0 is installed. Click OK to close the error
message, and the program should perform properly.
If not, reinstall DirectX® 3.0b from the program disc. To do so,
follow the steps below:
- Double-click the My Computer icon on the
Desktop.
- Right-click the cd-rom drive and select
Install DirectX 3.0b from the pop-up menu.
- Follow the installation instructions and
relaunch the program.
Note: If audio
difficulties occur after closing the error message, contact the
computer manufacturer for updated Sound Card drivers. Insure the
drivers that are compatible with DirectX® are requested.

Cannot
Initilize Graphics (Windows® 95/98) |
| When attempting to
launch Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?®, a message indicating that
the graphics cannot be initialized is received. This issue is
usually the result of an incorrect Display setting. Changing this
setting should resolve the issue. |
Complete the following
procedure to change the color settings to 256 colors.
- Click Start, choose Settings and then click
Control Panel.
- Double-click the Display icon.
- In the Display Properties window, select the
Settings tab.
- Near the bottom-left portion of the window,
under Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95), click
the drop-down menu and choose 256 Colors.
- Click Apply near the bottom-right portion of
the window.
- Choose Yes if asked, "Do you want to restart
the computer?
NOTE: If 256 Colors
is not an available setting, contact the computer manufacturer for
additional assistance and information. |

Screen Flashes or
Corrupted Display |
| While using Where in
Time is Carmen Sandiego?®, the screen flashes during transitions or
shows additional corrupted display symptoms. This issue is often
caused by a conflict between Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego?® and
a particular background application. Removing the shortcut to this
background application from the Startup folder should resolve the
issue. |
Follow the
instructions below to remove the Macromedia® Shockwave® Init
shortcut from the Startup folder.
- Click Start, select Settings, and choose
Taskbar & Start Menu.
- In the Taskbar Properties window, click on the
Start Menu Programs tab.
- Click the Remove button.
- In the Remove Shortcuts/Folders window,
double-click the Startup folder.
- In the list that appears, select the Shockwave®
Init shortcut icon by clicking on it once.
- Click the Remove button.
- Close the windows and restart the computer.
NOTE: Shockwave® Init
is a TSR (terminate and stay resident) program that controls the
Shockwave® Remote Control Panel. In the future, the remote control
can be activated from the Start Programs Menu by selecting
Shockwave®, then Shockwave® Remote. |

256 Colors Required |
| Where in Time is
Carmen Sandiego?® requires that the Colors (Windows® 98) or Color
Palette (Windows® 95) setting be set to 256 Colors. (This is a
minimum requirement of the program.) Following a step-by-step
procedure will allow changing of the setting, or verification that
256 Colors is chosen as one of the Display Settings. |
Complete the following
procedure to change the color settings to 256 colors.
- Click Start, choose Settings and then click
Control Panel.
- Double-click the Display icon.
- In the Display Properties window, select the
Settings tab.
- Near the bottom-left portion of the window,
under Colors (Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95), click
the drop-down menu and choose 256 Colors.
- Click Apply near the bottom-right portion of
the window.

Auto-Install Does Not
Begin |
| Where in Time is
Carmen Sandiego?™ CD into the CD-ROM drive, the installation does
not begin. Installing the program manually will resolve the issue. |
Follow the steps below
to complete a manual installation.
- Verify that the proper CD is inserted into the
CD-ROM drive.
- Click Start and select Run. The Run dialog box
will open.
- Type D:\SETUP.EXE in the Open: field. (The
letter D represents the CD-ROM drive. If a different letter
represents the CD-ROM drive, use that letter in the Open: field.)
- Click OK. The installation should begin.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the
installation.

|
CD Is Not Recognized |
| After inserting the CD
into the CD-ROM drive when prompted, the CD is not recognized. Any
number of the following conditions may cause this issue: wrong CD is
being used, CD needs cleaned, CD-ROM drive settings require changes,
or the CD-ROM driver is corrupted, outdated, or the wrong one. |
By completing the
procedures that follow, the CD-Read issue may be resolved. Begin
with item one and proceed through the list.
- Verify that the correct CD is being used when
prompted to insert the disc.
- Clean the CD. Place a small amount of
nonabrasive, liquid soap on the shiny side of the disc. Using your
fingertips and warm water, gently rub the soap on the disc in a
circular motion. Rinse the disc thoroughly and dry it using a
clean, soft T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or
tissue paper.
- Change the Read Ahead setting in the following
manner:
- Return to the desktop and right click on the
My Computer icon.
- Select Properties from the menu that appears
and click on the Performance tab in the Systems Properties
window.
- Click the File System button and click the
CD-ROM tab.
- Locate Optimize Access Pattern For:.
- Click the arrow to the right of the
information field and select the No Read Ahead option.
- Restart Windows®.
- Verify that the computer is utilizing a 32-bit
file system. In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3
above), click the Performance tab. Verify that the File System
reads 32-bit. (If it reads anything else, contact the computer
manufacturer for installation of the proper CD-ROM or hard drive
drivers.)
- Verify that the most current version of the
driver for the CD-ROM drive is being used. Contact the computer
manufacturer for additional information.
- Try to use a different disc in the CD-ROM drive
to see if it can be read.
- If possible, insert the CD that is not being
recognized into the CD-ROM drive of another computer to see if the
issue remains.

Incompatible Version
of the RPC Stub |
| When attempting to
install the program, the message "Error 0x90070725 Incompatible
version of the RPC stub" appears. An incorrect version of the
OLEAUT32.DLL file in the System folder causes this issue.
Downloading and installing the correct version of the OLEAUT32.DLL
file should resolve the issue. Consult this technical note for
additional instructions. |
