Issues |

The
program requires that your sound card have drivers that are DirectX®
certified. Without specific sound card drivers, the program may not
function properly. To resolve the issue,
complete the following steps:
- Start the Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™.
- Click at the top of the screen (using the left mouse button)
to bring up the menu bar.
- Look for the Sound listing or title. If Sound is not listed
as an option in the menu bar, it is likely that the sound card
drivers are not DirectX® certified. Please contact the sound
card manufacturer for drivers that are DirectX® certified.
NOTE: If Sound is listed, contact the sound card manufacturer
for updated drivers that are DirectX® certified. |

Monitor Should Be Set to Thousands of Colors
|
| |
After
the program is launched, the following message is received: Monitor
should be set to thousands of colors. An incorrect display setting
typically causes this message. Changing the display setting should
resolve the issue. Complete the following
procedure to change the display setting.
- Click Start, choose Settings and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Display icon.
- In the Display Properties window, select the Settings tab.
- Near the bottom-left portion of the window, under Colors
(Windows® 98) or Color Palette (Windows® 95), click the
drop-down menu and choose 16-bit High Color.
- Click Apply near the bottom-right portion of the window.
- Choose Yes if asked, "Do you want to restart the computer?"
NOTE: If 16-bit High Color is not an available setting,
contact the computer manufacturer for additional assistance and
information. |

Windows®: WS Requires QuickTime™ v 2.11 |
| |
The
error "WS requires QuickTime™ Version 2.11" occurs during the
installation of the program. This error is usually caused by an
incomplete installation of QuickTime™. Reinstalling the program
should resolve the issue. To reinstall the
program and QuickTime™, follow the instructions below.
- Close programs and return to the desktop.
- Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive.
- Click Start and select Run.
- Type D:\qtwsetup\qt32inst.exe (where D represents the letter
of the CD-ROM drive in use) in the Open: line.
- Click OK.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation.
(If prompted to delete existing versions of QuickTime™ choose
Delete. Only older versions of the 32-bit QuickTime™ will be
deleted.)
- Once the installation is complete, run the program. The
issue should be resolved.

Error Type
10 (Macintosh@) |

When
attempting to launch Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™, the
program crashes. In addition, an Error Type 10 message is received.
This issue is caused by a conflict between the program and the
operating system. Disabling file sharing should resolve the issue.
Complete these steps to resolve the issue.
- Click the Apple Menu and choose Control Panels.
- Locate and click File Sharing.
- Turn off or disable file sharing.
- Close the Control Panel.
- Restart the Macintosh® by clicking Special from the menu bar
and choosing Restart from the list that shows.
- Launch the program. The issue should be resolved.

Unable to Print Using Apple® LaserWriter® 8
|

| When
attempting to print using the Apple® LaserWriter® 8 printer, nothing
happens. This condition is typically the result of an outdated
printer driver. Updating the printer driver should resolve the
issue. In order to successfully print using
Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™, version 8.3.3 (or higher) of
the LaserWriter® printer driver needs installed. Contact the
computer or printer manufacturer for updated driver and installation
instructions. |

Deleting Menu from the Menu Planner |

After
creating and saving menus using the Menu Planner, you want to delete
one or more of the menus. This can be accomplished by completing a
step-by-step procedure. Follow the steps
below to delete one or more saved menus:
- Launch the program.
- Go to the Menu Planner portion of the program.
- Click File and select Open.
- Select the menu that is to be deleted.
- Click OK.
- After the menu appears on screen, click the Clear button.
- Select Delete Menu. The menu will be deleted.

Go To Button does Not Work with Windows® 95/98
|
| |
After
installing Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™ on systems using
Windows® 95 or Windows® 98, the Go To button does not function. When
the button is activated, no menu opens. Sound card drivers that are
not installed properly, outdated, or are not DirectX® certified
generally cause this issue. Verifying sound card driver status
should help to identify and resolve the issue.
To resolve the issue, complete the following
steps:
- Start the Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™.
- Click at the top of the screen (using the left mouse button)
to bring up the menu bar.
- Look for the Sound listing or title. If Sound is not listed
as an option in the menu bar, it is likely that the sound card
drivers are not DirectX® certified. Please contact the sound
card manufacturer for drivers that are DirectX® certified.
NOTE: If Sound is listed, contact the sound card manufacturer
for updated drivers that are DirectX® certified. |

CD Appears Blank on Windows® 95/98 Systems
|

| After
obtaining a free copy of Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™ and
placing it in a system using Microsoft® Windows®, the CD shows 515
MB used but lists no files. The CD you have was bundled as a free CD
with a Macintosh® system. The CD is an OEM (original equipment
manufacturer) CD designed to be used only on Power Macintosh®
systems. The Windows® files were not
pressed to the CD during processing. Therefore, this particular copy
of Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™ is not intended for use on
systems using Microsoft® Windows®. |

Fractions Print As Symbols in OS 8 (Macintosh®)
|

For
computers using Macintosh® OS 8.x (where x represents a version
number), the default system font is Charcoal. This font causes the
fractions in the program to print as symbols and not as fractions.
Changing the default system font should help to resolve the issue.
Changing the Charcoal font to the Chicago font can
be completed using the steps below.
- Close programs and return to the desktop.
- Click the Apple menu.
- Select Control Panels.
- Select Appearance.
- Click Options on the left side of the screen.
- Select Chicago as the system font.
- Click the box in the upper-left to close this window.
- Select Special from the menu bar.
- Choose Restart.
- Launch the program and print. The issue should be resolved.

Mac®: WS Requires QuickTime™ Version… |
| |
While
attempting to start Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™ an error
message indicates that WS requires QuickTime™ Version X (where X
represents the version of QuickTime™). In addition to indicating
that the proper version of QuickTime™ is not installed, the message
may indicate that QuickTime™ cannot be found at all. Downloading the
most recent free version of QuickTime™ from the Apple® Web site
should resolve the issue. Complete the
following steps to download the latest free version of QuickTime™.
Go to
http://www.apple.com and download the latest free version of
QuickTime™ available. When at the site, click Downloads and follow
the instructions.
Additional Information
NOTE: On Macintosh® systems there are three files required
for QuickTime™ to load:QuickTime™
QuickTime™ Musical Instruments
QuickTime™ Power Plug
All three of these files must match version numbers exactly or none
of them will load.
Complete this procedure to verify version numbers:
- Close programs and return to the desktop.
- Double-click the hard drive icon.
- Double-click the System Folder.
- Double-click the Extensions folder. A list of files or a
group of icons should appear.
- Click View from the menu bar and choose By Name to view the
files as a list sorted by alphabetical order.
- Locate one of the three main QuickTime™ files (listed above)
and click once on it to select it.
- Click File from the menu bar and select Get Info. In the Get
Info window a version number should appear above the comments
box.
- Record the version number.
- Close the window and repeat Steps 6 though 8 for the
remaining two QuickTime™ files (listed above).
- Compare the version numbers to verify that they match.
NOTE: If the versions do not match, check the Extensions
Disabled folder and the Trash for other copies of these three files.
It may be possible to make a working set out of the files found in
any of the three locations. |

Unable to Copy Archive.z (Windows® 95) |
| |
During
the installation of Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™, the
following error message appears: Unable to copy archive.z. This
message typically indicates that 16-bit drivers are being used in a
32-bit operating system. Checking for the proper drivers and
updating those drivers (if needed) should resolve the issue.
Complete the following to verify that 32-bit
CD-ROM drivers are installed:
- Close programs and windows and return to the desktop.
- Click Start, select Settings and choose Control Panel.
- Double-click the System icon in the Control Panel window.
- Click the Performance tab. Locate the File System: entry. If
the message "Some Drives are using MS-DOS compatibility mode"
shows, then 16-bit drivers are in use.
- Contact the computer manufacturer to obtain 32-bit CD-ROM
drivers and to install these drivers.
NOTE: If no reference to MS-DOS compatibility is made, it is
likely that the system is having difficulty reading the CD. Complete
the steps below to trouble-shoot the CD-read issue:
- Clean the CD. Place a small amount of nonabrasive, liquid
soap on the shiny side of the disc. Using your fingertips and
warm water, gently rub the soap on the disc in a circular
motion. Rinse the disc thoroughly and dry it using a clean, soft
T-shirt or lint-free towel. Do not use paper towels or tissue
paper.
- Change the Read Ahead setting in the following manner:
- Return to the desktop and right click the My Computer
icon.
- Select Properties from the menu that appears and click
the Performance tab in the System Properties window.
- Click the File System button and click the CD-ROM tab.
- Locate Optimize Access Pattern For:.
- Click the arrow to the right of the information field
and select the No Read Ahead option.
- Restart Windows®.
- Turn off DMA in the following manner:
- In the Systems Properties window (found in Step 3
above), click the Device Manager tab.
- Choose View Devices By Type. In the list that appears,
locate CD-ROM or CD-ROM Controller.
- Click the plus (+) sign next to this listing.
- Using the left mouse button, double-click the name that
appears.
- In the Properties window, click the Settings tab. Find
the DMA checkbox and remove the checkmark (if one exists).
- Click OK.
- Verify that the most current version of the driver and
firmware for the CD-ROM drive is being used. Contact the
computer manufacturer for additional information.
- If possible, insert the problem disc into the CD-ROM drive
of another computer to see if the issue remains.

WS Guide.exe-Unable To Locate...(Windows®
NT/2000/XP) |

During
or after installing Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™, the
following message is received: WS Guide.exe - Unable To Locate DLL
"the dynamic link library Winspool.dll could not be found in the
specified path..." This message occurs when attempting to run
Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™ in Windows® 2000 or Windows®
XP. Renaming the WINSPOOL.DRV file will help to identify the source
of this issue. Consult with the remainder of this technical note for
more information and the procedure. Follow
the procedure below for the operating system in use. Choose one of
the following:
NOTE: The resolution below for Windows® 2000/XP uses a
compatibility mode option which is not available in Windows NT®. As
a result, Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™ is not supported on
Windows NT®.
Windows® XP
- Close all programs and windows and return
to the desktop.
- Click Start and select My Computer. The My
Computer window will open.
- Click Tools on the menu bar and select
Folder Options. The Folder Options window will open.
- Click the View tab.
- Locate the "Hidden files and folders"
folder under the Advanced Settings: section and select "Show
hidden files and folders."
- Verify that the box to the left of "Hide
extensions for known file types" is not checked. (If it is
checked, click once in the box to remove the checkmark.)
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Double-click the C: drive icon.
- Double-click the Windows folder.
- Double-click the System folder. Do not
click the System32 folder.
- Locate the WINSPOOL.DRV file and click on
it once to select it.
- Click Edit in the menu bar and choose
Copy.
- Click Edit in the menu bar and choose
Paste. A file named “Copy of WINSPOOL.DRV” will appear.
- Right-click the Copy of WINSPOOL.DRV file
and choose Rename from the menu that appears.
- Type WINSPOOL.DLL and tap ENTER on
the keyboard.
- After renaming the WINSPOOL.DRV file to
WINSPOOL.DLL, close all windows and return to the desktop.
- Click Start, select All Programs and
choose Broderbund Software.
- Right-click on the Williams-Sonoma Guide
to Good Cooking™ icon and left-click Properties from the menu
that appears. The Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™
Shortcut Properties window will open.
- Click the Compatibility tab.
NOTE: In some instances, the following message may
appear: "The folder $Install_ToDirectory specified in the Start
in box is not valid. Make sure that the folder exists and that
the path is correct."
If the message appears, enter the directory that identifies
where the program is installed. After entering the correct
directory location in the Start in box, click the Compatibility
tab and continue with the next step.
- Verify that the box to the right of "Run
this program in compatibility mode for" is checked. If it is not
checked, click once in the empty box to check it.
- Select Windows 95 from the drop-down menu.
- Check the box to the right of "Run in 256
colors" by clicking once in the empty box.
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Launch Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good
Cooking™.
Windows® 2000
- Close all programs and windows and return
to the desktop.
- Click Start and select My Computer. The My
Computer window will open.
- Click Tools on the menu bar and select

| On a
Macintosh® system, when attempting to print using the
Williams–Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™, only the header prints. This
issue occurs on printers with USB (Universal Serial Bus)
connections, regardless of the printer type. Consult the remainder
of this technical note for additional information.
The Williams–Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™ program
was released prior to USB technology. As a result, the program was
never tested using the technology. There is no known solution for
this printing issue. |

WSKL.STR
Could Not Be Found |

When
attempting to launch the Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™, the
following message appears: "WSKL.STR could not be found." This
message typically appears when the Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good
Cooking™ CD is not in the proper drive or the CD is not recognized.
View the remainder of this technical note for more information.
The Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™
requires the CD to run. If the CD is not in the CD-ROM drive, place
it in the drive and wait approximately 60 seconds before attempting
to launch the program.
If the CD is in the drive and the error message appears when
launching the program, follow the procedure below to resolve the
CD-Read issue. Begin with the first item and proceed through the
list. Try to launch the program after completing each procedure.
 | Verify that the Williams-Sonoma Guide to
Good Cooking™ CD is in the correct drive. If the computer has
more than one CD/DVD drive, place the CD in another drive, wait
approximately 60 seconds, and try the program again.

- Locate the WINSPOOL.DRV file and click on
it once to select it.
- Click Edit in the menu bar and choose
Copy.
- Click Edit in the menu bar and choose
Paste. A file named “Copy of WINSPOOL.DRV” will appear.
- Right-click the Copy of WINSPOOL.DRV file
and choose Rename from the menu that appears.
- Type WINSPOOL.DLL and tap ENTER on
the keyboard.
- After renaming the WINSPOOL.DRV file to
WINSPOOL.DLL, close all windows and return to the desktop.
- Click Start, select All Programs and
choose Broderbund Software.
- Right-click on the Williams-Sonoma Guide
to Good Cooking™ icon and left-click Properties from the menu
that appears. The Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good Cooking™
Shortcut Properties window will open.
- Click the Compatibility tab.
NOTE: In some instances, the following message may
appear: "The folder $Install_ToDirectory specified in the Start
in box is not valid. Make sure that the folder exists and that
the path is correct."
If the message appears, enter the directory that identifies
where the program is installed. After entering the correct
directory location in the Start in box, click the Compatibility
tab and continue with the next step.
- Verify that the box to the right of "Run
this program in compatibility mode for" is checked. If it is not
checked, click once in the empty box to check it.
- Select Windows 95 from the drop-down
menu.
- Check the box to the right of "Run in 256
colors" by clicking once in the empty box.
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Launch Williams-Sonoma Guide to Good
Cooking™.
Windows® 2000
- Close all programs and windows and return
to the desktop.
- Click Start and select My Computer. The
My Computer window will open.
- Click Tools on the menu bar and select
Folder Options. The Folder Options window will open.
- Click the View tab.
- Locate the "Hidden files and folders"
folder under the Advanced Settings: section and select "Show
hidden files and folders."
- Verify that the box to the left of "Hide
extensions for known file types" is not checked. (If it is
checked, click once in the box to remove the checkmark.)
- Click Apply and click OK.
- Double-click the C: drive icon.
- Double-click the WINNT folder.
- Double-click the System folder. Do not
click the System32 folder.
- Locate the WINSPOOL.DRV file and click on
it once to select it.
- Click Edit in the menu bar and choose
Copy.
- Click Edit in the menu bar and choose
Paste. A file named “Copy of WINSPOOL.DRV” will appear.
- Right-click the Copy of WINSPOOL.DRV file
and choose Rename from the menu that appears.
- Type WINSPOOL.DLL and tap ENTER on
the keyboard.
- After renaming the WINSPOOL.DRV file to
WINSPOOL.DLL, close all windows and return to the desktop.
- Click Start, select All Programs and
choose Broderbund Software.
- Right-click WSGUIDE and left-click
Properties from the menu that appears. The Williams-Sonoma Guide
to Good Cooking™ Shortcut Properties will open.
- Click the Compatibility tab located at
the top. If the Compatibility tab is not present, it must be
enabled before continuing. Click or navigate to
http://www.microsoft.com/ and search for article #279792
for information that describes how to enable the Compatibility
Mode in Windows® 2000.
